16 problems related to electrical system have been reported for the 2003 BMW 330. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
All exterior lights comes on when the car is off, and now the car stays on when the key out out of the ignition. The recall was fixed before about the lights but they started back again I just got the car and I can't even drive it without the battery dying if I go to work or even the store.
All passenger doors except driver door cannot be unlocked or opened using any method--the key or any unlock button, or using either inside or outside door handles. This leaves only the front driver door openable. This is a huge safety risk. I can't drive the car this way--I would not be able to get my kids out of the back seat. It happens whether the car is running or not, and moving or not.
Takata recall: air bags were replaced on 11/23/16. The air bag red light indicator remained on and was never reset by the dealer. Dealer was notified several times to resolve the issue but never resolved the issue. To this day the light is unresolved, still on.
I've had this issue for many years now but never thought about the potential consequences. Other people have had these issues as can be found when doing searches on the internet. This problem involves the door not unlocking after being locked via the center console, key fob, or auto lock feature when vehicle is mobile. This has been reported across multiple build types during the early 2000's. This is potentially dangerous especially in an accident or fire when occupants cannot safely and quickly exit the car without having the break the window and climb out because the doors will not even unlock when you pull the latch which should disengage the "locked" state. I had go tend to a patient at the hospital today for emergency surgery and could not get out of my car without having to roll down my window, then use my key to unlock my door from the lock cylinder on the outside. However I was unable to retrieve anything else from my car and had to do so from the driver door only. This can be life threatening in the wrong situations. This involves the general module 5 or "gm5" and should be investigated for a potential safety recall as it is intermittent.
Power windows power windows broke on 3 windows. Sometimes the glass has shattered. Sometimes the glass just slides down and becomes non operational. Glass shattering has been scary and dangerous. This has occurred while driving. I live in a state with lots of weather. Thunderstorms. Has occurred with child in car seat during a thunderstorm. At highway speed. I have had them repaired at dealerships and at independent BMW repair shops. Cost has been approx $600. This began as early as 2010 and continues to this day.
Gm5 electric module stopped communicating with remote control. Various intermittent activity for driver door unlock mechanism and passenger unlock mechanism by any available internal hard-wired or remote button. 100% failure of footwell trunk release button.
Central locking mechanism is going crazy. If I were in a crash, the car is supposed to unlock the doors, turn on the flashers, etc. This will not happen with the central locking mechanism working intermittently. If I am injured in an accident it may be more difficult for paramedics to get to me. I was actually locked in my car today when I arrived at school. I had to crawl out the window and thankfully I was able to roll up the window with the key in the door. I have read that this may stop working as well. This is very concerning, online I have read that this can cost around $750. 00 to fix at the local BMW stealership (whoops, dealership). BMW should fix this if they are concerned with their drivers safety.
The contact owns a 2003 BMW 330 xi. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the instrument panel caught fire. The vehicle was destroyed. The police were contacted and a fire report was on file. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was contacted and they confirmed that the VIN qualified for repairs under NHTSA campaign id number: 11v438000 (exterior lighting:brake lights). The failure and current mileages were 110,000.
I was in a parking garage the weekend after I had just bought my 2003 BMW 330xi man it was beautiful, I had my girlfriend with me at the time. Upon trying to exit the vehicle we couldn't nothing would unlock the doors, nothing would roll down the windows, this was extremely embarrassing to be happening on a date. She couldn't believe we were stuck in the car and there was no way out. Luckily having my cell phone I was able to call 911 so they could help me. I managed to have the sunroof open at the time and was able to hand them my keys where they could place the key inside of the key hole and manual unlock the doors. This is only the first experience I ever had. I only called the police so they could take note of the issue of the safety. I have taken family out for outings only to find out they all have to climb out of windows or through the drivers door. I've even had to climb out of my own car I refuse to put a dime into fixing this as its caused me embarrassment to the point I hardly drive it unless I go somewhere alone. I even have a seat belt that doesn't work for no reason. The gm5 needs to be recalled image if I had a child or family back there the car was on fire and the only way to get them out is to open the door and you can't because of a faulty piece of equipment.
Drove for about 2 hours. Left the car parked for about 3 hours. When I tried to unlock passenger door via remote key fob it did not. I got inside the car and tried to unlock it manually but it still did not let me. I had my handicapped sister with me and it was impossible to get her inside the car. I had somebody come to pick her up after over 3 hours. I have never seen another car that will not unlock at least manually when you pull the door lever on the inside or lift the lock mechanism manually. Next day the lock worked in the morning but as the day got hotter it stopped working again and it would not unlock even manually.
The doors on our bmx 330xi will lock and we cannot unlock them from the inside or the outside using the interior or exterior door handles or the key fob. My wife and kids had to climb out of the windows to get out of the vehicle. If there was an accident they would have been trapped. I called the BMW dealer and they told me to have it towed and they would take a look at it. This has happened several times and it is an extreme safety issue. I have researched it and it appears to be a very common problem on the 300 series. It has happened a few times and then the problem goes away. I hope no one gets hurt because they get trapped in their vehicle. Thank god that my family was physically able to climb out of the windows ,if they were elderly or disabled they would have been trapped. This is an extremely dangerous safety defect that needs to be investigated, addressed and remedied by the manufacturer.
It has been more than 8 years all power related to opening/closing the passenger door including the handle does not work, not able to open the glove compartment, not able to open the gas door, not able to open the trunk without having to use the key. Convertible top is not working. Worst of all I'm not able to have a passenger in the car for safety purposes. Dealers have not been helpful. Car is like new with less than 80,000 miles.
The passenger doors fail to open with the internal door unlock button. This is due to failure of door unlock relays in the gm5 module. This could result in a significant safety issue if a failure of the unlock relay happens when attempting to unlock passenger doors in an emergency to retrieve passengers.
My car will not unlock reliably via the remote control or the center unlock/lock button. I can't get into the car when this problem happens. The general module(gm5) is going bad and the car will only unlock when it feels like it. From what I understand this is a normal issue with my 2003 BMW 330i. Hopefully BMW will file a recall on this item so I don't have to pay the $790 the dealership charges for this known problem. Thanks garrett.
Intermittent failure of driver and passenger side tail light assembly due to burnt connector pins and connector housing. Inadequate connector/wire rating. Should be subject of a recall from a responsible car manufacturer. Unsafe to drive in the dark. Blemish on the ultimate driving machine. Intermittent failure of the mostly passenger side head light. Occasional failure of the driver side head light. Normally the light bulb would require replacement, but often the whole lighting unit is considered failing by the dealer. Cost of replacement is extremely high.
About 2 or so years ago I started to notice my night driving was becoming unpleasant and unsafe due to the fact that my headlights were losing output. After replacing the plastic lenses new from BMW I then went on to buying new bulbs thinking that would make a diff. It didn't. 10-12-12 today my lights are yellow/foggy on the inside like smoke has made the lenses opaque and my output is barely seen, I looked on the back where the bulb is inserted and it sure looks brown in there, I get more light reflected on the ground when I turn my turn signals than I do on the headlights. After going online and searching, my car came from facotry with a defect zkw xenon headlight system, which 99% of the zkw headlight owners of e46 sedans found online have the same issue, all you have to do is google "e46 zkw burnt bowls" . I have a 4 month old little girl, I cannot imagine driving with her in the car on a rainy night and my concern is now my baby. I can send you pictures if needed please, thank you for reading and I appreciate your help.
