3 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2001 BMW 330

Failure Date: 04/15/2016

Dash indicated left taillight was out when it wasn't, this was random on and off for a few months. After a few months the dash panel indicator light stayed on. As I was driving one day I noticed the smell of smoke coming from the trunk. I stopped, and noticed the melted wires from the tail light harness. As I looked at them I could see them sparking when certain movements occurred. , very dangerously and erratic. Both male and female sides melted. This is extremely dangerous as it impedes the ability to warn other drivers when turning or stopping. This was brought to the dealerships attention but they do not consider this an important enough issue to replace it as part of a recall or service recovery.

6 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2001 BMW 330

Failure Date: 12/01/2014

My vehicle in the last week has an tail light indicator illuminated the dash. Upon investigation of the part it looks to have the same issues as many have described with the ground wire being scorched. I contacted BMW na because of the similar recall on other BMW vehicles. Unfortunately they were unwilling to help unless I was willing to take the car into a dealership for an 90 dollar diagnosis. Only after that would they be willing to weigh in if they would be willing to cover the cost of the repair or not. This is not a gamble that I'm really willing to take. Recall NHTSA action number: pe09036 should be extend to the 2001 330ci Bmws. Please open a investigation into this as it is a widely known issue with these cars.

10 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2001 BMW 330

Failure Date: 10/15/2012

I was receiving a intermittent left tail light warning indicator and assumed it was a bulb that was going out. After some time had past I received a steady left tail light indicator and when I was about to replace the bulb I discovered the bulbs was fine and found the wiring/connector in the tail light bulb carrier had a short/melted. I believe this is the same issue/problem on the 2002-2005 BMW e46 3series which a tail light recall was issued.

11 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2002 BMW 330

Failure Date: 07/20/2012

This car is 2002 BMW 330ci. I noticed that the warning light illuminated, which indicated that a tail light or brake light was not working. I replaced the bulbs, however, the warning light remained illuminated. I also noticed that the wiring harness plug had some damage in the middle and lighting assembly on the right had a connector in the middle gone. My mechanic stated that there was a recall on this problem. I contacted the recall center who stated my car was not covered. I noticed a lot of the BMW models were covered including 330i and the 330xi. I also went to a BMW dealer who again said my car was not covered. I don't want to be pulled over for a problem that should be covered by BMW. Updated 8/7/12.

12 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2001 BMW 330

Failure Date: 04/18/2012

My 2001 BMW 330i is experiencing tail light problems. The right rear turn signal light does not work and when activating it, it blinks twice as fast on the front and side marker. On the display panel it shows the rear right signal is out. The left rear brake light is also out. This problem has been going on for a few months now at least. The car display on the dash indicates that the rear right brake light is out. I have changed everybulb in the rear of the car which fixed nothing. I then disconnected the the tailight connector on each side to reveal that some of the pins inside of the connection have melted away. I am positive that is the problem as it is with the 2002-2005 model 3 series. I called BMW about the recall and of course 2001 is not included yet! I hope this gets fixed soon. It is extremely inconvenient and dangerous.

23 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2004 BMW 330

Failure Date: 01/15/2010

The tail lights on both sides of my 2004 BMW 330i have stopped working completely (no turn signal or brake lights) due to a burned wire. This began on the left side with the turn signal light going out. When I went to change the bulb, I realized the bulb was fine. Looking closer I saw that a wire in the wire harness had burned and melted the plastic. It also melted the metal on the tail light assembly. This was a couple months ago that this happened and now the right side has done the exact same thing. I called the dealer and was told that this was a common problem with this model. The cost to fix the problem will be $350 per side. Looking online I saw that BMW issued a service report (si b 63 03 06) because the problem is so common. I am concerned that this may be a fire hazard and don't understand why there wouldn't be a recall. I am also concerned that I do not have an extra $700 on hand to fix the problem and am forced to drive with no turn signals or brake lights. It seems like since this is a design flaw and a safety hazard, BMW should be responsible to fix it.

I presented this problem to the dealer a few years ago the instrument panel light kept telling me a bulb was out and when you look at it all the bulbs were working. I have replace the rear taillight assembly due to the prong where starting to melt. So I call Bmwna and they too ignored my first request for the recall on the 2005 BMW rear tail light hazard, I have since tried to called several times again and was told that my car was not within the recall time frame but it seems obvious that my car is having the same problem all the others ones have had and wish to get this potential hazard fixed because if the light on the dash will read one thing but the tail light is showing something different to those traveling behind me. I have enclosed the two photos of the burnt casing and harness. I feel this hazard is putting me and my family in great danger because there are no definite sign when or where these lights malfunction the blinker, brake, etc .
