1 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/17/2026

"I am reporting a failed safety remedy by BMW of macon regarding recall 13v-044 (battery cable connector). Following the recall service, the vehicle suffered a systemic digital failure and a legal odometer discrepancy of approximately 20,000 miles 73,547 to around 53,000k (the 53k miles was seen on the dash after the service, but the exact number wasn’t documented by me, but was reported to my service advisor at BMW of macon) specifically: 1. Module DE-sync: the recall was allegedly performed without proper voltage stabilization, causing a communication failure ('brownout') between the cas and instrument clustermodules. 2. Vehicle immobilization: the resulting digital handshake failure has triggered a security lockout, rendering the car unable to crank and locking the transmission in park (no neutral). 3. Misdiagnosis: the dealership is refusing to reconcile the software corruption they caused, instead attempting to charge for a mechanical starter motor that was fully operational (cas 1/1) prior to their intervention. This vehicle entered the dealership for a safety recall and was returned in a digitally compromised, legally unmarketable, and non-operational state. I request a federal investigation into the dealership's failure to provide a safe and effective remedy. ".

2 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/06/2023

The contact owns a 2008 BMW 335xi. The contact stated after parking the vehicle at a parking lot, he noticed smoke exiting the center dashboard. The contact detached the plastic kickboard and saw the fire located in the wires. A bystander had a fire extinguisher available and was able to extinguish the fire. The contact burned his left hand but declined medical attention. The fire department arrived at the location and filed a fire report. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer, where they associated the failure with the recall. The contact stated a manufacturer inspector, later on, informed the recall was not associated with the fire. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 123,000.

3 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/11/2022

The engine and all electrical components including power steering spontaneously cutout while driving, usually while engine isnt being stressed at all, sometimes while idling. If the car is rolling, I have to restart the engine while driving and using manual power to steer. Obviously, this is a huge safety problem. I've just had the alternator and battery replaced, and they test fine. This has happened at least 50 times and I've reduced time driving vehicle until I solve the issue, which has persisted at least 6 months. I asked the BMW dealer about the following recall, and they claim they already performed it years ago after I already owned the car, without my recalling being told it was done. However, the symptoms are back, and BMW refuses to do anything about it at this time: report receipt date: Feb 07, 2013 NHTSA campaign number: 13v044000 component(s): electrical system potential number of units affected: 504,545 all products associated with this recall details 2 associated documents manufacturer: BMW of north America, llc summary: BMW is recalling 2007-2011 3-series sedans manufactured March 2007 through October 2011. The connector for the positive battery cable connector and the corresponding terminal on the fuse box may degrade over time. Over time, the high current flow and heat from electrical resistance may lead to a breakage of the connection, and a loss of electrical power to the vehicle. Consequence: if there is a loss of electrical power to the vehicle, the vehicle may unexpectedly stall, increasing the risk of a crash. Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the positive battery cable connector and secure it with an improved method, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in March 2013.

4 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/15/2020

Encountered difficulty exiting the car. Manufacturer's dealer had to install "updated door latch on both front" doors. At the time the vechicle was stationary in my driveway.

5 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2020

My car hasn't start up for 2 years now. 1st it started with a dead starter, then alternator, then the radiator and water pump bursted, and as I was standing outside of my car the passenger air bag deploys while the car was off and key out of the ignition. Luckily no one was in my car but now my car doesn't and wont crank or turnover, it makes a buzzing noise for a split second when I hit the start/stop button and thats all. I'm getting full voltage to it. Every time I run my scanner, I get different codes every time, I bought a 2nd scanner (carly) to compare and both threw out different codes every time but the main ones was the starter and pcv code; which I got 3 different starters put in, all new and the code was still ahowing. Ive spent more time researching and more money buying parts to fix my car then what I bought the car for which was $6k. Worst part is that my car wont even start so I cant take it to the shop and im definitely not paying a toll fee just to have the shop tell me what I already know. Ive looked up forums and multiple people is facing the same issues as I am with their results ending with a "please help if anyone finds out what this issue is". I've replaced the battery 3 times and registered the batteries each time. I have a new starter, alternator, radiator, radiator fan, water pump, thermostat, reservoir, crankshaft and camshaft position sensor, battery, ibs cables, power distribution box, ground straps, oil filter, oil filter housing, spark plugs, coil packs, manifold and gaskets, pcv valves, start/stop switch, relays, fuses, and I still get the same results which is no crank/no start and a buzzing noise. When I spoke with BMW customer support I told them that the closest BMW repair shop is 2 hours away from me and the lady replied "that's going to be a huge chunk of money for towing". I mean seriously, BMW should be paying for or that and fixing their mess but won't own up to it.

10 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/17/2018

Blower motor recall. My BMW caught on fire on 5/17/2018. I believe it may be related to the current recall concerning engine fires in several model lines. It was parked in my driveway. Had been turned off for over 1 1/2 hours. Damage was primarily isolated to the front and rear. Fire department was called and arrived within 3 minutes to extinguish the fire. Comments made by arson investigators were odd burn patterns. First thought was electrical related fire. They had to call back fire fighters due to worry the battery would reignite.

14 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2017

Driving my car at 65mph the whole car shut down I had no control of the vehicle. Was barely able to power the steering wheel to the right and coast into a parking lot. Where I was still not in a safe place because my brakes had no response as well. Finally snatched up the ebrake and the car began to slow down. This is the second time this issue has occurred with me driving and I'm lucky to have my life after two horrific incidents like this. Also I have no air bag so if I wouldn't of been so lucky to not hit anything head on I would of not even had a airbag deploy. I was told by BMW my car shut down because of the water pump but when this was replaced after a $950 bill my car still doesn't work and now I'm being told by BMW now it will be another $500 to figure it out. I have not been able to drive my car free of concern for more than 6 months. As much as this car has shut down or stalled on me I don't feel it's safe for anyone to drive a vehicle like this. Got the car January 2015 and my warranty was used up within 1 year fixing the same parts repeatedly. No my car won't even start or run properly. This is after I go the water pump replaced like I was instructed by BMW. I didn't have enough to load that document but I have it available also.

Bare wire exposed on both front headlights.

24 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/14/2016

Vehicle overheated during high speed driving and began rapidly slowing forcing an emergency exit from the highway. Fortunately I was near an exit. BMW dealership replaced the water pump but person at the dealership explained that the water pump was probably blown as a result of the failure of the "ibs" cable. Dealer had to replace the "negative ibs cable. " therefore, it appears that failure of this cable will require emergency stopping or emergy handling at any speed. The highway speed I was traveling made this particularly dangerous. I have the repair invoice showing the required replacement of the negative ibs cable.

25 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2016

I got locked in my car several times and it will not unlock. This can cause death on a hot day. The vehicle was stationary.

26 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2016

My family took he car to the grocery store and when they attempted to exit the car, the drivers door wouldn't open. I eventually discovered that fuse #73 failed causing the doors to lock the passengers inside the car. Initially it was just the drivers door, but as I was pressing the door lock buttons on the key and the central locking button all door were eventually affected. I see this as a safety hazard since passengers could be trapped in the vehicle in an emergency.

27 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2015

The engine malfunction "reduced power " message keeps coming on and off , low engine oil message keeps coming on even though its good on oil , the steering wheel was hard to turn while I was driving causing me to have to pull over and turn the car off and back on and the steering was ok after that. It's currently being looked at my the dealer where I purchased it only 3 months ago.

28 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/03/2015

The doors will not unlock. The lights flash on the outside but even when pushing the unlock button from the inside of the car the doors stay locked. Wife had to exit my car was by crawling out of the window. Able to use the key for manual unlock of driver door only; gas tank door remains locked so I cannot put gas in my car and, therefore, cannot drive my car.

29 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/07/2015

I just got belt replaced. About two weeks later the belt pops. The car lost power steering and then would not start. I've researched online n saw that its a design flaw in the 07- 08 335i's but BMW is refusing a recall. Imagine if I was on the highway n it happened. Its terrible.

30 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/13/2014

Tl-the contact owns a 2008 BMW 335i. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 55 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact was able to cost over to the left side of the road. The vehicle restarted and was driveable. The failure recurred several times. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. 31 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2014

When I started at the car noticed a electrical burning smell and smoke after a while it was gone and it came back. Also driving the car on the highway smell was present.

32 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2014

I had noticed a melting plastic smell for a few weeks but couldn't identify the source and shortly after this my headlight burnt out so I went to replace the bulb. By this time, I noticed smoke coming out of my headlight mount. Upon opening the headlight I noticed all of the wire shielding had fallen off of the wires inside the headlight mount, causing the wires to ark and melt. Upon comparing against the other headlight, I found the same thing- all of the wire shielding had fallen off. I went to the dealer and was told that this happens all the time, simply due to how hot and dry this model gets under the hood and the headlights being sealed. They said it's usually covered by the extended warranty, however not in the case of my vehicle's mileage. Since the headlight is a sealed unit, you cannot access the wires to replace them and cannot purchase a harness, the whole unit must be replaced at a cost of $800 each. I googled and found several complaints of the same issue. Upon contacting BMW hq directly, they said it is a known issue, but not covered, and got back to me several weeks later offering to pay $200 toward the cost of the $1600 repair if I had it done at the dealer, or $2000 toward the purchase of a new BMW.

33 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/21/2014

I was warming up the car in the morning for work, it was on for about ten minutes; as I sat down put the car in reverse I heard a noise and and my car shut down. I turned my car back on and drove for a short period before noticing that there was not any air blowing. . . . I took it the the mechanic a day later to replace the blower motor. . . . The problem was not the blower motor, the problem was a rectangle shaped cable for four prongs but only three where connected to the blower motor melted and burned out the cable. The mechanic followed the cable and cut the affected burned corroded rusted !!! part of the cable, and replaced it. . . . . If I wasn't looking he would have charged me for a blower. . . . And maybe more !!! I honestly do think BMW should fix this problem. . . Two days later my driver side window switch when out- I purchased one at orielys auto parts; the water pump also failed the same day and my car over heated that made the total over 2 grand in less than a week!!! , but my blower works perfect wtf !!! everything began that morning. . . . Because of the cable that shorted !!! OH and on top of that the turbo is making noises and I think its failing now!!!.

34 Electrical System problem

My 2008 BMW 335i has the same issue for which the below recall was issued. The recall needs to be extended to 2008 model year. Recall subject : front seat occupant protection mat report receipt date: Nov 12, 2013 NHTSA campaign number: 13v564000 component(s): air bags potential number of units affected: 76,565 manufacturer: BMW of north America, llc summary: BMW of north America llc (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2006 325i, 325xi, 330i, 330xi sedans and 325xi sports wagons, model year 2007 328i, 328xi, 335i, 335xi sedans and 328i and 328xi sports wagons, model year 2006-2007 525i, 525xi, 530i, 530xi, 550i sedans and 530xi sports wagons, model year 2006 760i sedans, model year 2006-2007 750i, 750li, and 760li sedans, and model year 2006 x5 sports activity vehicles, equipped with certain seat types. The front passenger seat occupant detection mat that determines if and how the passenger frontal air bag should deploy in a crash may fatigue and develop cracks which could lead to a system failure. Consequence: should the system fail, in the event of a crash, the front passenger air bag would be deactivated, increasing the risk of personal injury. Remedy: BMW will notify owners with an interim notification letter in January 2014 since parts are not currently available. When parts are available, anticipated to be in March 2014, BMW will send a second letter and dealers will repair the occupant detection mat to eliminate the possibility that it may crack, free of charge. Additionally, owners of model year 2006-2007 3 series with standard seats, 5 series with comfort seats, and z4 models, will receive an extended warranty on their front passenger seat occupant detection mat. 35 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2013

Driver's side door would not open because it remained locked. It could not be unlocked using the inside or outside door handle, the key fob unlock button, or the door lock switch on the front dash. I had to physically insert and turn the key from the outside to unlock the car. I understand this may be a fuse or a door lock actuator problem. It is an enormous safety issue if I cannot get out of my car because of an electrical failure.
