All Bmws have a defect with passenger seat occupancy mat; airbag will not deploy in accident for passenger because passenger seat restraint system is defective in passenger seat (they call it passenger occupancy mat)- it is a life threatening issue found in my model of car and several other models. Issue recall and save lives.

While driving with a passenger in front passenger seat, I occasionally receive a warning that there is a malfunction in passenger restraint system. At that time, the "pass airbag off" light goes on. I took the car to the dealer and was told it is likely a faulty passenger airbag seat occupancy sensor mat. The car is available for inspection. Our safety is potentially compromised because the passenger airbag may not go off in an accident.

The car hydroplaned while driving on the interstate, spun out of control and slammed into a tree in the rear end. My son was going approximately 65 mph and upon impact no airbags deployed and the steering wheel was in his hands after impact. His seat broke and collapsed into a laying position. His head sustained a huge blow to the interior side of the car in addition to another head injury in the front, a fractured wrist and multiple bruises along with a sore neck & back. The insurance adjuster saw the car and could not believe the steering wheel came completely detached in addition to no airbags deployed. My son is 6’2” and weighs 235. I would have expected from his body weight alone the side airbag deploying. The car is totaled beyond repair. The car had no warnings or indicators regarding faulty airbags or steering issues.
- the component that has failed is the front passenger seat occupancy sensor, as indicated by an obdii scan showing fault code 93c3, seat-occupancy detector, passenger. - the safety of any person in the front passenger seat is compromised because the passenger airbag will not deploy while this sensor is not operating properly, as indicated by the "passenger airbag off" light which is now always illuminated. The vehicle has not been in an accident and nobody has been injured as a result. - the problem has been confirmed by an independent service center. - the vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance, etc. - there is a restraint system malfunction warning message stating "fault in passenger-restraint system affecting airbag, belt tensioner, or belt-force limiter. Continue to wear the safety belt. Have the system checked by the nearest BMW center. " - I have contacted both my local BMW dealer (BMW seattle) and the BMW north America customer relations department and have been informed by both that there are no open recalls or technical service bulletins related to this sensor on my model/year and that the vehicle is out of warranty, so the financial responsibility to repair the vehicle is on me.

My car randomly started throwing an error for a failure with the passenger restraint system. From what I have read it has something to do with the oc3 mat in the seat that detects if there is an occupant, and if the weight of the occupant is considered to be that of an adult, so the airbag does not deploy in the wrong circumstances, which is potentially dangerous to anyone that may ride in the passenger seat. There has been an extended warranty, and recall for previous years of e90 Bmws, but 2009 may not be included, even though the seats should be the same. I plan on contacting the dealership for further investigation, but I know I cannot afford to have this safety feature fixed out of my pocket at this time. Thank you for your time.

Pass. Seat mat sensor malfunction it cracks and causes a saftey issue where if the car is to crash the airbag would not go off on the passenger side.
The seat mat sensor is also defective in the 2009 model year. BMW has included only 2007 and 2008. We cannot put a child or elderly in the front seat as the airbag will go off.
Passenger airbag malfunction, seat sensitivity is touchy, reports an occupant when empty and gives an occasional malfunction warning, at any speed, any time.
Passenger airbag seat mat occupancy sensor fault. The problem began whenever a passenger would sit on the seat, the airbag light would go on. After some time passed the light stays on permanently. I noticed recalls for this problem in previous years. Upon researching, it seems to be a wide spread problem that just isn't reported. It leads to many just fixing it themselves, or just buying bypasses to avoid forking out over $1200 to get it fixed. The problem doesn't seem like a normal wear and tear situation, and needs to be addressed.

The airbag sensor in the passenger seat has malfunctioned and cannot read whether or not a person is sitting in the seat. In turn the airbag is off due to the cars ecu. BMW dealership in bellevue has repeatedly told me that the only way to remedy the situation is to buy a new seat at my own expense. This is a serious safety issue along with my takata airbag that I have yet to receive any sort of notice for repair or even that I fall under the recall.
The front passenger seat belt indicator goes on even though no one is sitting on the seat.
When using the heated seats. Drivers side will get so hot it burns your skin. Passenger seat doesn't heat up.
Seat occupancy sensor on passenger seat has failed. Shows as "airbag light" on dash. BMW already recalled some vehicles for this, and gave a 15-year extended warranty for cars including my model and model year, but refuse to honor the warranty for my particular vehicle because it has sports seats instead of standard seats. Lookup on BMW parts numbers show that the seat occupancy sensor has the same part number on sports and non-sports seats. No remedy from BMW, including contact to BMW USA (have record of emails, including an offer for a phone call I never received).

Airbag problem light constantly lit; "passenger airbag off" light always on even when there is a passenger in the seat. Mechanic states that the car is giving a code for a failed passenger occupancy sensor. There is already a recall for this model and year (NHTSA campaign 13v564000), but my car (build date July 07, 3-series with sports seats) is not eligible for the recall or the voluntary warranty extension according to BMW.
My car is in perfect condition, mint. . . I am a certified fraud examiner. I was on a road trip from bellevue, washington to richmond, bc. While driving in richmond, bc near the auto west BMW dealership, my driver's seat began going forwards and backwards as I drove. Sometimes the automatic button would work and the seat would stop. A minute or two goes by and the driver's seat goes crazy and pins me against the steering wheel and pins my knees against the dashboard. I am barely able to steer and lift my foot off of the gas and apply the brakes. Due to my training, I did not panic. . . I pulled over into a parking lot, and did all I can to squeeze myself out of the driver's seat. The seat button was non responsive, scared the hell out of me. I was two blocks from the dealership. I called BMW north America and they registered my complaint. I was able to get the seat back, and drove it to the BMW dealership in richmond, as I pulled into their parking lot, and seat repeated itself again. Way to crazy. . . They disable the motor control unit for the seat. I am getting it serviced next week at the bellevue washington BMW dealership. I have an extended warranty that will cover it. . . 700 bucks. . .
My 2008 BMW 335i has the same issue for which the below recall was issued. The recall needs to be extended to 2008 model year. Recall subject : front seat occupant protection mat report receipt date: Nov 12, 2013 NHTSA campaign number: 13v564000 component(s): air bags potential number of units affected: 76,565 manufacturer: BMW of north America, llc summary: BMW of north America llc (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2006 325i, 325xi, 330i, 330xi sedans and 325xi sports wagons, model year 2007 328i, 328xi, 335i, 335xi sedans and 328i and 328xi sports wagons, model year 2006-2007 525i, 525xi, 530i, 530xi, 550i sedans and 530xi sports wagons, model year 2006 760i sedans, model year 2006-2007 750i, 750li, and 760li sedans, and model year 2006 x5 sports activity vehicles, equipped with certain seat types. The front passenger seat occupant detection mat that determines if and how the passenger frontal air bag should deploy in a crash may fatigue and develop cracks which could lead to a system failure. Consequence: should the system fail, in the event of a crash, the front passenger air bag would be deactivated, increasing the risk of personal injury. Remedy: BMW will notify owners with an interim notification letter in January 2014 since parts are not currently available. When parts are available, anticipated to be in March 2014, BMW will send a second letter and dealers will repair the occupant detection mat to eliminate the possibility that it may crack, free of charge. Additionally, owners of model year 2006-2007 3 series with standard seats, 5 series with comfort seats, and z4 models, will receive an extended warranty on their front passenger seat occupant detection mat. Owners may contact BMW customer relations at 1-800-525-7417 or email BMW at customerrelations@bmwusa. Com.
