Fuel Pump Problems of BMW 3 Series

BMW 3 Series owners have reported 5 problems related to fuel pump (under the gasoline fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Fuel Pump problem of the 2009 BMW 3 Series

Failure Date: 05/28/2010

2009 BMW 335i, high pressure fuel pump failure. 9500 miles on vehicle. Engine is slow to start. While driving and rpm above 3000, check engine light comes on and engine reduces power significantly. If pump were to fail completely, engine would die, leaving driver without power steering. This could be a major safety problem on highways with dense traffic. After reading internet blogs on vehicle, this is a known defect for BMW n54 engines. Some drivers have had the pump replaced multiple times with same outcome each time.

2 Fuel Pump problem of the 2001 BMW 3 Series

Failure Date: 05/11/2010

The contact owns a 2001 BMW 325i. The contact was driving 35 mph when the vehicle hesitated and began to lose power. The contact pulled over and shut the vehicle off yet it would not restart. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer where the dealer diagnosed the failure at the fuel pump. The fuel pump was replaced. The manufacturer was contacted and advised that the vehicle was not under recall. The failure and the current mileage was 100,000. Updated 04/13/lj updated 06/01/lj updated 01/04/2012.

3 Fuel Pump problem of the 2003 BMW 3 Series

Failure Date: 04/25/2010

1. Engine had been running roughly on start up (for a few seconds) for a few days. On the date of incident, while starting car to head back home, car started very roughly (for a short period of time). Car then cleared up. While driving at speed of 55-60 mph on highway, car suddenly died. I had to steer the car from the left-hand lane onto the right hand shoulder in the midst of traffic (difficult to steer). 2. The engine died suddenly while driving on the highway. This was the only time that the engine died while I drove the car. 3. I had the vehicle towed to the shop. The fuel pump was replaced. Even though there was gas in the tank, the fuel tank was empty.

4 Fuel Pump problem of the 2008 BMW 3 Series

Failure Date: 09/10/2008

I took the vehicle for the following symptoms: 1. ) long(er) crank 2. ) engine malfunction, reduced power 3. ) service engine soon 4. ) heavy, erratic shaking and shuddering 5. ) engine sounded like a union pacific train with loud pumping sound 6. ) because of 4 + 5, decide to turn-off the engine or sometimes it just stalls before 7. ) after reset, the car becomes drivable but symptoms will reoccur. 8. ) able to recreate problem when I mash the gas after doing some research on an auto forum, I suspected that the caused of the problem was a failing high pressure fuel pump. The dealership kept the car for 3 days to run some tests and concluded that the fuel pump was the problem. Since they replace the part, the car has not broken down again. However, they introduce another problems. 1) the car's exhaust noise is much louder now 2) the car is less fuel efficient, lower miles per gallon 3) the car now has a turbo lag which was previously non-existent. This means BMW is falsely advertising the 335i twin-turbo has zero lag. This was true before they updated the car's software but is not longer true at this moment in time.

5 Fuel Pump problem of the 2007 BMW 3 Series

Failure Date: 05/21/2008

1. High pressure fuel pump issue on may 21st led to the car stalling while driving and turning. Also put the car in "limp mode" (reduced power). Also, run-flat tires on the car have all bubbled/popped- have had car only for 5 months with 6800 miles. 2. Car stalled numerous times while driving and would stall almost every time when car was stopped at a stop sign or red light. Before bringing the car in for service three days later the car stalled at least 5 times- BMW replaced the fuel pump yesterday.
