Suspension Problems of BMW 3 Series

BMW 3 Series owners have reported 9 problems related to suspension (under the suspension category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Suspension problem of the 2002 BMW 3 Series

Failure Date: 08/25/2017

Michelin pilot sport a/s plus tires 275/30/19 on BMW m3 had blow out on freeway at normal speeds of 65 mph. Could hear rubber whipping the road just prior to the abruptly bursting. Had tires inspected and technician found excessive cracking near the tread and center wear-bar had pitting in the rubber (15,622 miles). Car is seldom driven and always garaged (climate controlled). Tire store had seen identical issues in the past with same tire. Did not want to replace with same tires that potentially have the same issue. Lost warranty credits to purchase another brand for family safety. These tires are not safe and need to be reviewed for material and engineering design. Particular vehicle does not hold a spare. Endangerment from potential injury and being stranded in an isolated area.

2 Suspension problem of the 2001 BMW 3 Series

Failure Date: 01/06/2016

Was driving on hwy 99 getting ready to exit on jensen Ave when I felt a bump then my driver curtain/ door airbag deployed. After further inspection I found damaged to the diver's rim and tire, brakes have been clicking ever since and suspension seems to be affected as well since car is been shaking and tilting to that side.

3 Suspension problem of the 2004 BMW 3 Series

Failure Date: 12/18/2014

Rear spring broke! could not believe that a spring could brake. I looked up on the internet to see if anyone else had a similar problem and was amazed that the internet is full of complaints. A broken spring causes handling problems and can cause the car to go out of control causing an accident. It is obvious that BMW knows of the issue and the faulty design. I cannot believe that a car company that charges so much for a car would not own up too such a large problem and recall all of the affected cars. Please help us.

4 Suspension problem of the 2000 BMW 3 Series

Failure Date: 07/23/2013

The left rear subframe mount torn away from the vehicle unibody/frame mounting location. The rear body metal fatigue was caused from loading and unloading of the drive train due to an engineering design defect. This occurred under normal driving conditions and is a known defect by BMW. A class action law suit required BMW to fix the problem from 2009 to 2010, but there are still many vehicles on the road that have not been repaired or the metal fatigue showed up after the 2010 deadline for repair. This is a major defect making the vehicle unsafe to drive because the rear axle can separate from the vehicle. This should be a vehicle recall and all BMW e46 3 Series should have the rear subframe mounting points repaired and reinforced by BMW at no cost.

5 Suspension problem of the 2001 BMW 3 Series

Failure Date: 03/10/2013

While driving my vehicle, I hit a pothole on the passenger side of the vehicle. My driver side airbags deployed: the side, and curtain. The passenger side airbags did not deploy. After inspecting the vehicle on the outside. The rear passenger side tire was flat.

6 Suspension problem of the 2000 BMW 3 Series

Failure Date: 02/06/2012

On February 6, 2012 exiting the freeway an about a mile or so after, I heard this big clunk that came from the rear, stopped and pulled over to see what that was. Looked under the car and the rear axel was hanging and subframe was severely damaged. Took it to the dealer the next day for inspection and called Bmwna to file the claim. They will not pay for the repair and offered 50% of the cost. My car has 160k miles and it is in excellent condition besides this faulty engineered by BMW and they will not pay. Luckily I am still alive. How about if I was still on the freeway driving and this thing happened and caused an accident? this is really serious! safety of myself and other people. I am still dealing with Bmwna to cover for the really expensive repair that this incident created. It was a defect from the manufacturer and now they do not want to take responsibility. Please help!!!.

7 Suspension problem of the 2003 BMW 3 Series

Failure Date: 08/27/2003

BMW did not properly design the rear floor of the car body where it supports the rear subframe. As a result under normal driving, many of the BMW e46 3-series cars (325, 323, 330, in the I, ci, or cic trims, example 325ci or 330i) suffer from torn sheet metal where the rear subframe attaches to the body. This eventually causes a major safety hazard as the rear subframe and associated suspension can separately entirely from the vehicle resulting in a loss of control and severe crash. This can affect any e46 3-series car but is most common in models built from 1999-2001 and more common in manual transmission cars. The repair costs anywhere from $800 (pre-emptive strengthening of sheet metal if it has not torn already) to $5,000 (replacement of rear body subfloor). BMW settled a class-action lawsuit in 2009 allowing 3-series owners to have their cars inspected and in some cases repaired by BMW but this did not cover all affected cars and expired in December 2010 so not all owners were able to have their cars inspected or repaired by that date. In addition many cars have experienced subframe mounting failures after Dec 2010. BMW should be required to inspect, repair, and reinforce all e46 (1999-2005) 3-series bodies where the rear subframe mounts.

8 Suspension problem of the 2001 BMW 3 Series

Failure Date: 03/15/2003

The engine of my car shut off, and upon being towed to the dealer, they got back to me to say that the engine failed as a result of drivers error from a downshift from 4th to 2nd. The dealer said that this was identified by the car's computer system. However, after talking to many mechanics, I have been instructed that this problem could never have been identified by a car's computer, and this was just an out for the manufacturer and dealer. I am not satisfied with their answer, and am looking for a way to protest their decision. For right now, I was stuck paying for the total bill which exceeded $6000.
