Alternator/generator/regulator Problems of BMW 525

The contact owns a 2006 BMW 525xi. While driving, the contact noticed an odor of burning rubber and the alternator warning indicator illuminated. Also, the power failed without warning. The contact stated the vehicle was not able to start without receiving a jump. The contact took the vehicle to a certified mechanic who diagnosed that the wires connected to the battery were burned. The contact stated they would take the vehicle to the dealer to receive an official diagnostic test. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000.

The battery warning light fails to illuminate when the car's alternator fails. At idle a voltmeter read 11. 5v. With the car off the reading was 12. 2v. Even if my meter is inaccurate a running car should produce a higher reading than a battery in a non-running car if the alternator is working. I removed the battery from the car and attached it to a "Smart" charger. The charger started out reading "lo. " my charger reads "lo" when the charge is less than 50% or so, and above that reports estimated charge in increments of 10%.

Alternator failure (of a 525i BMW 2001) due to the entrance of leaves and dirty through the cooling hose of the alternator and getting into the electrical parts of the alternator (iodes). This lead to fire and damage of the alternator. The hose is aproximately 2. 5 in. And it doesn't have any filter to clean the air or avoid particles to come in.
