I purchased this BMW 525i used from a person that obtained it from a wholesale dealer, it had some minor frontend damage from a fender bender (broken grill, ding to hood) showing 107900 miles. Everything else checked out. I few months later I noticed a slight change in transmission sound, but it might have been due to the cold temperatures here in wisconsin. A couple of days later while just finishing going up a slight straight incline at around 45mph the transmission dropped down into limp down mode and a temporary notice came up on the computer screen indicating a transmission problem. Stopping and restarting the engine cleared the problem, the next day near the same spot it occurred again. I assumed the transmission might be low on fluid but looking online BMW indicated this is a no service transmission but that it is possible to check the fluid level by accessing a plug under the car. When a service tech checked he said the fluid level was normal but smelled burnt. He recommended against any service in that it likely would result in faster complete failure. The problem has not reoccurred and no codes show in the system file, in that BMW insisted on no providing a method to check the transmission fluid, they assumed the liability for failure if regular maintainance (transmission flush) could have prevented this failure.

Tl takata recall. The contact owns a 2001 BMW 525i. The contact stated that the transmission was slow to change gears intermittently. An independent mechanic diagnosed that the transmission assembly needed to be replaced. Also, while driving 25 mph over a pothole, the undercarriage of the vehicle was damaged and the air bags deployed with force. The driver was not injured. The vehicle remained parked at the contact's residence due to the failure. The contact later received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 19v015000 (air bags). The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The failure mileage was not available.

I was driving on my way to work and started smelling something burning. All electrical warning lights started lighting up the dash and then displays go blank. Passenger compartment was filling up with smoke coming from under glove box. I pulled over and called fire department. We disconnected battery and took to BMW. They said micro-processor located in spare tire storage area had shorted out due to water. I don't carry coolers and don't leave my trunk open when it rains. How did water get there. Bulletins show that sunroof drains get clogged and water gets into trunk and shorts out electrical. Service bulletin says if this happens, customer pay but move electrical to where it can't get wet. So BMW knows it's a problem and can cause a fire but doesn't care to cover repair. Now I'm stuck with $1000 repair for micro-processor just to be able to tell what else is burned up. I have to pay before I will know if it will cost an additional $5,000 to repair. I'm lucky electrical didn't catch fire and burn up entire car.

Transmission jerks and the car gives a kick when the car automatically downshifts from 2 to 1. This typically happens when slowing down to a stop. Seen many references of transmission jerk / kick issues online on bimmerfest. Reports to BMW USA as well. BMW USA refuses to assist with this issue.
The contact owns a 2005 BMW 525i. The contact stated that there was a pan sleeve gasket leak coming from the transmission. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for a routine inspection when they found the transmission leak. The dealer stated that a gasket needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified and stated that there were no recalls addressing the failure and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 80,000.
The car beeps every few miles and a warning light shows it need an oil change, I had just gotten a change, so they changed it again, the next day the bells started ringing again. Also the gear shifter went out. It is still ringing.
I own a 2004 BMW 525i with 119,000 miles on the engine. I experienced my car making a thump sound and then the I would lose acceleration. I called the mechanic and they could not find the problem because it did not show the dash errors. This had been going on for 3 weeks and then the mechanic told me my transmission needed replacing. I am disappointed that this is a common problem and nothing is being done about this. I will never buy a BMW again.
