1 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/05/2024

I bought a 2008 528i July 2024. Got emissions & tag at the end of August. Oct 5 2024. My car was on fire. Drove the car 11 mins got out for a few mins got bk in crunk the car and a flame shot out of what I'm assuming is a fuse box on the driver side. The car had flames coming from under the steering wheel area in the dash. When we crunk the car we could smell wire burning at first. Then flames. . The vehicle has an active recall that clearly says a pcv heater valve will cause the vehicle to over heat and short circuit causing a fire. Wiring harness needs to be replaced by adding a fuse to keep this from happening. The car was having issues passing the emissions. It was throwing a code something to do with the crankcase positioner something to do with emissions. The car started running rough and idling rough before the fire happened. I sent BMW pics and the fire report. The fire report states it was an electrical fire. I never looked under my hood bc I was afraid I'd get burned. Not sure if anything else was damaged under the hood. Bc my vehicle is 16years old BMW will not even send an inspector out to the garage where the vehicle sits just a month after getting it on the road. . They first said it had aftermarket lights on the right side of the car by looking at pics I sent. That is false it's not even a light BMW placed a reflector sticker cc when they made the vehicle it peeled off after the first wash. This same technician that doesn't know a light from a reflector then claimed my wiring harness is aftermarket bc he says he can't see BMW sticker. It was a fire the car is damaged the sticker prolly melted along with the fuse box. . I ask that BMW respect my vehicle that I just saved my $ to purchase 107,000 miles on it should hv never caught on fire. . I need an inspector to go out and check my vehicle in person. . Not guess and claim aftermarket parts. I'm not the only person this has happened to. Someone is gonna get killed bc of Bmws manufacturing company. This is serious.

2 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/13/2024

After purchasing this vehicle from my aunt and uncle my one headlight when bad after purchasing the headlights I replaced both the right and left one while removing the old headlights the insulation from the wires just crumbles off casuing a short bc the wires are zip tied several times together and causes my lights to flicker or not work at all while the the car keeps notifying me that there is an issue never couple seconds.

3 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2022

Been smelling burning plastic/or oil thru air vents. As if the pvc valve was melting per recall description on probles, it fits the description, the only thing that happened to the car recently is one of the windows regulator anti trap functions it says antitrap function window disabled, then slowly started noticing burning smell for the first 10 minutes of everyday drive, my safety and many others could be very compromised , as I live on a mobile home community, and these properties have a high risk of fire hazard, and the fumes I am smelling, also I dont wanna get caught in a vehicle fire anywhere, much less on traffic, freeway or cause an accidents because of disabled vehicle, - the list goes on . Thanks for allowing me to make a complaint and bring awareness for many other owners.

Headlight internal wiring insulation completely degraded, exposing wires and causing electrical shorts/arcing. Unchecked this will certainly cause a fire.

16 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2013

I have a 2008 BMW 528i with 56,000 miles with a certified pre-owned warranty (the full factory warranty expired less than a year ago). The vehicle computer identified 3 faults and the entire rear passenger tail light cluster is non-operational. I attempted to replace the bulbs and the issue was not resolved. I then took the vehicle to a BMW dealer for diagnosis and repair; I was surprised when the advisor informed me the issue is not covered under warranty (cpo) and will cost $400+ to repair. The rear lights are a critical safety component for any automobile and must be operational at all times. I am disappointed that this repair will not be covered under the cpo warranty. I chose to contact BMW and challenge the warranty coverage based on the component criticality. BMW did not agree with my position and stated the repair will not be covered by BMW. Upon further inspection of the vehicle and tail light assembly I identified that a wire has shorted and melted several plastic parts relating to the tail light cluster. Both the light housing and the wire adapter are no longer operational due to the burned area. I am lucky this electrical short did not start a fire because it is located close to the battery and gas port. I performed a quick search online and realized several other BMW 5-series owners have experienced the very same issue with their vehicles.

17 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/06/2013

On or about 25 may 2013, I started hearing a intermitted beeping sound inside the car, however there was no warning on the dash board screen therefore it was hard to trace the problem. The intermitted beeping would start and stop, while driving making me very nervous because I wasn't sure what was going to happen. The beeping sound changed to sound of something trying to reset itset like a reset pattern. Next on 6 Apr 2013, while inside a parking I thought I seen my right tail light blink on & off. Then on 8 Apr 2013, I notice my right tail was out, so I purchased and installed a new tail bulb but it didn't fix the problem. After reseaching, I found it was led problem and could only be fixed by a BMW shop. The BMW manual suggested taking the car to the BMW dealership, on 16 Apr 2013 I took the car to I. G. Burton that's when their inspection found " right rear tail light is out ( found that ground wire is burnt and bulb holder is burnt) recommend replacing bulb holder and ground wire. It cost me $374. 48 to have the problem fixed.

18 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2012

I turned my car on and it instantly notified me that my taillight was out. Then I stepped out and tapped the taillight and it went back on then I took it to the dealership the next day now they are saying the connectors are burnt and they want me to pay 200$ to repair something that the manufacture should of corrected and perfected this is ridiculous hope someone helps me.

19 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2012

Warning came on that the right rear tail light malfunctioned. Within the next few days the warning went away but then came back intermittently and also stated that the right rear brake light and turn signal had malfunctioned. These warnings were intermittent. About a week later the signals came on every time the car was driven. I looked at the lighting housing and discovered that both the plug and housing had melted due to a brown wire. I will be taking the car to the shop tomorrow to get fixed but it seems more damage could have been done unless I discovered the existence of the problem.

20 Electrical System problem

The 8 pin connector to the right rear light assembly melted. Turn signal, brake light stopped working one wire seems corroded.

21 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/30/2012

The 8 pin connector to the rear light assembly melted. Turn signal, brake light stopped working while I was driving on the freeway.

22 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 03/30/2012

The warning came on that the right rear tail light malfunctioned. Within the next few days the warning went away but then came back intermittently and also stated that the right rear brake light and turn signal had malfunctioned. These warnings go on and off so my husband pulled the housing for the light out and discovered the connector plug and housing had melted because the brown wire was burnt and melted. So he went to the dealer ship to get another housing unit and new connector to fix the promblem. And a few months later the other side had the same issue and he replaced it as well. . . Now both are burnt again. I called the dealer ship to take my car in for this issue and they want $140 to look at it and they said they have not heard of this issue before. This is a safety issue and now that I look online it looks like a lot of people with this year, make and model have the same thing going on. This needs to be a recall. I feel like this will keep happening since both have beeen replaced already and it's happening again. Something is wrong.
