Failure Date: 03/13/2026

My 2020 BMW 530i caught fire while I was driving on March 13th. The car showed no signs of smoke. Another driver alerted me about smoke, I exited the vehicle, and within minutes the car was fully on fire. The vehicle is currently at a tow yard.

Failure Date: 02/04/2026

The center console screen has a default screen that in part includes interior fan speed temperature. To adjust the fan speed and other a/c settings, the driver has to click press a small button at the bottom of the screen to open a new window. This is very dangerous because it requires the driver to take their eyes off the road. The car should have physical buttons for the fan speed. Since it doesn't have physical buttons for the fan speed, the car should have permanent fan speed buttons at the bottom of the screen at all times. The bottom of the screen should include permanent buttons for air temperature, a/c on/off, and fan speed. BMW can easily do this with a software update. The car does include the ability to make these changes through voice commands, but the voice commands do not always work.

3 Equipment problem of the 2024 BMW 530

Failure Date: 01/23/2026

I had stopped uphill, with my foot on the brake, heading east on the left lane of pomona road, at the approach to the traffic light junction with route 45, around 3. 50 pm on Friday 1/23/2026. There were about 5-6 cars also stopped, ahead of me, at the red traffic light and several cars behind me, when I heard my car engine rev up loudly. I kept applying the brake. I could hear my car tires spinning with a smell of burning rubber from the tires as they spun on the road, as my car lurched forward, and hit the rear of the stopped car ~ 5-7 feet ahead of me. I felt that I had no control of my car and turned the engine off after the collision. I called 911 twice at 3. 55 pm and 4. 12 pm and waited as advised, for the police officer who arrived about 30 mins later. I filed the report and the officer was able to retrieve my auto license plate which had fallen off from the road where I could clearly see the tire marks on the asphalt from the spinning tires at the time of the accident. The only message I recall receiving on the display was one that informed me that I had experienced a crash after the collision. I had never experienced this problem before. Later ,after the police officer had arrived and documented the accident, I was able to drive the car home. The burning smell from the tires persisted for some time. The next day I called the BMW dealer in the am, and with great trepidation, drove the car to the BMW dealership. I explained to the service advisor on duty on the Saturday, what exactly had transpired during the accident. I also explained this later to the BMW body shop manager when I spoke with him. I requested a full inspection and investigation by BMW. I personally do not feel safe driving the car again after this most unnerving and frightening episode.

4 Equipment problem of the 2021 BMW 530

Failure Date: 01/10/2026

Good afternoon, I am writing regarding the recall affecting my BMW 2021 530i, VIN [xxx] . While I understand the importance of safety recalls, this issue has had a direct and measurable impact on the market value of my vehicle. Due to the recall, I have received reduced trade-in and resale offers, with dealers explicitly citing the recall as a reason for depreciation. This loss in value persists regardless of whether the recall remedy has been completed. I am therefore requesting compensation ($6000) for the depreciation caused by this recall, or financial adjustment or trade in. Please open a case on my behalf and advise on the next steps. I would appreciate this matter being reviewed by a regional case manager if necessary. Thank you for your attention. I look forward to your response. Sincerely, [xxx] [xxx] [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

7 Equipment problem of the 2019 BMW 530

Failure Date: 07/26/2025

Q) what component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? a) refrigerant gas(r-1234yf) leak in the evaporator core. If the inspection request is made after the repair, no. It is suspected that there is a inherent defect in the evaporator core. Possibly related to interaction between the r-1234yf refrigerant and the material of the evaporator core. Q) how was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? a) the hole caused by this defect leaks refrigerant gas into the cabin, which in turn exposes drivers and passengers to a range of harmful health effects, including respiratory issues, skin irritation, nausea, neurological symptoms, and cardiovascular problems. The driver/passengers can even sense it after the recharge of the refrigerant gas(r-1234yf). Located behind the dashboard, manufacturer hinders users from being able to take appropriate and timely counter measures to protect them against such exposure. There is no warning system in placed either. Q) has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? a) BMW service center confirmed the leak in the evaporator core using a nitrogen gas test. Q) has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? a) no. Q) were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? a) no. If did, I could have maintained the system and avoid myself and passengers from being exposed to the safety risks, especially for a long-distance driving. The ac issue involving replacement of evaporator core in BMW 5 series and etc, is not mere an issue of inconvenience but rather pose long term health safety issue. People drive cars for a long period of time, sometimes hours and hours. Even if not all of the leaked refrigerant gas come into the cabin, driver and passengers are still exposed to the leaked gas.

10 Equipment problem of the 2024 BMW 530

Failure Date: 08/08/2024

I am a [xxx] physician who has been driving for about 30 years. Purchased this vehicle as a cpo with VIN as identified above. It is a 2024 BMW 530i x-drive from faulkner BMW in lancaster, PA. It was delivered on July 25, 2024. I have only put approximately 200 miles on in it since delivery. On Thursday, [xxx] there was catastrophic failure of the vehicle. At around [xxx] I was driving north on [xxx] about to make a right turn onto [xxx] for work at the hospital system where I am employed. The traffic light was red and I was going about 5 miles an hour and attempted to brake the car. There was an 18 wheeler truck about 10 to 15 feet ahead of me. My car instead of braking underwent unintended acceleration. Despite my efforts to slam on the brake, the car was accelerating. None of the safety features including automatic emergency breaking were activated. Unfortunately I collided with the 18 wheeler. This was fortunate in some regards as I could have potentially struck a pedestrian or a motorcycle and have had a potentially fatal event. Please note that additionally my airbag did not deploy. The BMW dealership was contacted. They dropped off a loaner vehicle and picked up my vehicle in a flat bed for investigation. I was informed to contact BMW of north America which I did. Interestingly enough, there were no safety recalls on this vehicle on [xxx]. The car is at the BMW dealership in lancaster PA for their internal inspection. I am being informed that the engineers are looking at the vehicle to find out what transpired. Interestingly enough, I did receive a phone call from the service manager advising me on August 9 that there was a safety recall as a relates to the brakes. As I review the NHTSA site, there is now a recall on my actual vehicle's braking system. I did a review of unintended acceleration and found multiple complaints. BMW is looking into this although into this, but external agency would be ideal. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C.

11 Equipment problem of the 2018 BMW 530

Failure Date: 05/03/2024

My car is producing a warning light for "passenger restraint system malfunction". This is a safety hazard and it is not covered by warranty. I believe this should be investigated and a recall should be mandated as many people have this issue. The cost to fix is over $2,500 and BMW should bear the cost of this safety issue.

12 Equipment problem of the 2018 BMW 530

Failure Date: 06/19/2023

I have been smelling a vinegar smell in my vehicle for 1 week upon turning on the air conditioner. At the end of one week I have been having several health issues and I am concerned that this is mold, mildew, or another toxic chemical. I live in las vegas where temperatures have reached 3 digits and I am unable to use my air conditioner due to this horrible smell. I ended up in the hospital this week and no one knows what the issue could be. I am concerned that it’s from breathing in toxins from my car.

13 Equipment problem of the 2022 BMW 530

Failure Date: 01/14/2023

The glass roof suddenly exploded while driving, there was a no visible damage on the glass as the sunshade was open and I inspect the glass for any cracks or chips, there were no cracks or chips. The outside temperature was 35 degrees, time as approximately 9:30 pm on a major highway with a smooth surface, and light traffic. The explosion did not occur while going under an overpass, there was no sound of any pebbles being pinged against the car, again traffic was light. Glass was not laminated as it is in a windshield, glass chips flew inside the vehicle which is very dangerous.

16 Equipment problem of the 2021 BMW 530

Failure Date: 04/04/2022

After pulling into a parking space and stopping, the braking system became unresponsive. While stopped with the foot on the brakes, attempts to place the car in park failed. After pumping the brakes, the car rolled forward as the car idled and the brakes were unresponsive as it rolled through a corrugated metal wall and the car only stopped after pressing the ignition button to turn off the car, putting anyone in or near the car at that time at risk. The problem has been reported to the dealer and the dealer inspection is pending but the problem has not been isolated and not reproduced. No prior warning lights or symptoms of a problem was noticed in this car before this incident.

17 Equipment problem of the 2021 BMW 530

Failure Date: 09/19/2021

Design of acceleration pedal and seat are causing me leg pain and causing my leg to fall asleep while driving. This is dangerous. There is too much resistance of pedal and lots of force needed to accelerate car.

18 Equipment problem of the 2018 BMW 530

Failure Date: 08/11/2020

My car had under 17,000 miles and had been serviced on schedule by an authorized dealer. I had BMW anchored driver's floor mat in place. My mother-in-law and I were wearing our safety belts. We were approaching a four-way intersection with a traffic light. The speed limit on the road is 35 miles an hour. I was driving slower than that speed. As I was approaching the intersection with a red light , I had taken my foot off the accelerator. Although my foot was not on any pedal, the car suddenly accelerated. I hit the brakes but I could not slow the car. I was rapidly approaching the intersection and other vehicles. To the right of the road was a house. I steered the car off the road and into the field on the left. I am certain that my foot was on the brake pedal because of its position and resistance. The car had accelerated without my foot on any pedal. Due the car's speed and an incline at the entrance to the field, the car became airborne for a short distance before landing hard and continuing toward a dumpster. Although I was unable to slow the car, I was able to steer the car away from the dumpster and toward a steep hill at the end of the field. The car was slowed by the incline and contact with the ground. My foot was still on the brake pedal. I was able to place the car in neutral. I placed the car in park and turned off the ignition. I called 911. The airbags did not deploy. My husband and the police officer both confirmed that there was nothing impinging upon the accelerator pedal. My mother-in-law was transported by ambulance to the hospital where she was admitted for acute lumbar spinal compression fracture. I was evaluated in the ed and released. BMW is to send an engineer from BMW to evaluate my car. The body shop told my husband that an employee started my car which initially revved at a high rate. Unintentional acceleration.

19 Equipment problem of the 2017 BMW 530

Failure Date: 06/25/2020

I was driving on a clear day on a nearly straight 4 lane surface road when someone pulled out in front of me. Where the collision avoidance would normally give warning and interfere, the car instead issued an alert that the system was unavailable. It was a clear day, the sensors were unobstructed, and the road had nothing about it that should be a problem for the systems. The accident was able to be avoided, but a critical safety system only indicated a fault right when it was needed. The dealership were unable to find a fault and blamed it on light blinding the camera.

Manufactures recall vehicle was relocated and now unknown.

21 Equipment problem of the 2007 BMW 530

Failure Date: 03/14/2018

Last year I could hear a sound of water through my sunroof and would have water thrown at me through my ac. My stereo and dash stopped working and suddenly started working after a couple of months. I took it to 2 different locations and they would tell me there was no short in a fuse. Yesterday my car would not start it was stationed in front of my home. I went to a mechanic and found that my battery was sitting in water. The car will not start even after water was drained and the battery was replaced. I called BMW but they want to charge me $385 just for a diagnostic. I have changed my battery like 4 time in the last 2 years which is just a headache in itself. My vehicle wont start.

22 Equipment problem of the 2007 BMW 530

Failure Date: 12/03/2017

While driving my vehicle on either the street or highway. My vehicle begins to release large amounts of smoke from under the hood and some sort of fumes come into the car through the ventilation system which makes it hard to breathe and see.

23 Equipment problem of the 2017 BMW 530

Failure Date: 08/01/2017

Active lane keeping assistant is very dangerous because the vehicle often will veer out of lane toward oncoming traffic or other obstacle. This occurs even though there are clear lane markings and all other requirements for system operation are met. It happens at higher speeds and at lower speeds as well. Since the feature does operate correctly a high percentage of the time, the driver is put under extra stress having to be constantly on guard for when the car will veer off without warning. BMW literature and video say the system will make the drive more relaxed and the driver more rested but it is exactly the opposite. Even though I know that the driver is always ultimately responsible, their video states that the system keeps the car in the center of the lane without driver steering input. I have contacted BMW and my local dealer. All they say is that the system operates as designed. But it is very dangerous and will cause injury or worse. Additionally, "with the system switched on, the person warning with city braking function and the side collision warning are active. " therefore, if you turn the system off because of the danger of veering out of lane, you will lose the safety features just mentioned. I am very surprised and disturbed by BMW's failure to acknowledge and address the failures and dangers of the system. Being most interested in safety of my vehicle I always purchase all the safety features. In this situation I have been sadly disappointed in the reliability of the BMW technology.

After driving about 5 minutes from home, I parked the car in the parking lot in front of my office. About 5 minutes later, bystanders noticed a fire in engine compartment of the car and called 911. The car was in flames in a short time. The fire department arrived, put out the fire.

27 Equipment problem of the 2006 BMW 530

Failure Date: 06/29/2015

I bought 2006 BMW 530xi about a year ago from a used dealership, the car was running perfect a month later in a sudden a I got a trans malfunction, I took it to BMW dealership which charged me $299 to check the transmission then came and said nothing is wrong with it. Couple weeks later the same message kept coming back and the transmission would act up, for example when I am slowing down to stop at a red light , the transmission would kick back so hard that I would have to press the brake so hard to avoid hitting the person in front of me. Now I took the car again to another BMW dealership because the trans malfunction stayed and did not go away when I restart the car like it was doing and they told me , it requires transmission replacement a. BMW advertises that there cars are strong and last longer than other cars, I think they need to get sued for providing false information fir their bad cars quality. I have found hundreds of online threads wanting to sue BMW for the poor transmission on their cars. BMW need to have a recall for BMW failed transmission.

28 Equipment problem of the 2007 BMW 530

Failure Date: 06/09/2015

The rubber gaskets for both the front windshield and back are wearing out prematurely. This may cause windshield to fly off while driving thereby causing an accident. I have contacted BMW and the case # is 1-4829383813.

29 Equipment problem of the 2006 BMW 530

Failure Date: 05/07/2015

The micro power module in the trunk burned up, crashing the screen/audio/service screen. The car is drivable but I cannot access any features from the dash computer screen, none of it works. There is a distinct plastic burned smell in the trunk. I have since learned this is a common problem. . . When I called my BMW certified mechanic, I barely explained my issue and his response was "let me guess, you have an '05 or '06 BMW 5 series, correct? the microprocessors in the trunk are burning up. . . They've since moved them from under the tire". My car could have burned down. Clearly BMW knows they have a problem as they have since moved the processor. I shouldn't have to pay for this costly repair.

30 Equipment problem of the 2007 BMW 530

Failure Date: 02/15/2015

Car was parked outside of our home and shut off. About 25 minutes later the car exploded into fire and burned down to the ground leaving the seats and trunk with all interior metal parts on our driveway. Our home was also damaged as a result of this car going on fire. The car was well maintained and no one can advise us as to why this happened.

31 Equipment problem of the 2003 BMW 530

Failure Date: 01/14/2015

At 96,000 miles the check light illuminated. Diagnosis was p0741 (BMW code 48) which is a fault with the torque converter clutch (tcc). This failure until corrected results in lower fuel mileage, and a guaranteed failure to pass the emissions test during state mandated vehicle inspections. Add to this that continued use of the vehicle will likely result in transmission damage since the tcc lockup clutch is slipping resulting in debris building up in the fluid. This fault is due to a defective torque converter clutch seal that BMW has a hidden service bulletin on. See si 24 03 06 dated February 2008. Replacement of the torque converter is expensive. BMW dealer quoted a bit more than $3000 for the replacement. I've since determined though a BMW forum that this issue is widespread with a large number of failures taking place. I was told by the dealer that the seal in question has not been updated and that failure of the seal will likely take place again in the future.

33 Equipment problem of the 2005 BMW 530

Failure Date: 03/22/2013

I was driving along the highway at approximately 55 mph in mycertified pre owned 2005 BMW 530i that I have owned for 3 and a half years when all of a sudden I got a message in the idrive that read :transmission failsafe, drive moderately". I then proceeded to drive home approximately 15 miles. After a couple of day I had my vehicle towed to the nearest bwm service center where I was informed that the trasmission would need to be replaced. The vehicle had 46k miles on it when I purchased it so that means that I have only driven 50k when the transmission failed. I just find it discerning that a vehicle with such low mileage is in need of a transmission. I have kept up the maintenance on my vehicle and as I mention aboved I purchase a pre- certified vehicle and I have never has a vehicle to need a transmission this soon. After checking the internet it concerns me that alot of other people have had the same issue and that BMW has no address it.

34 Equipment problem of the 2003 BMW 530

Failure Date: 06/01/2010

Without any previous problems, the "service engine soon" light came on. The car is a 2003 BMW 530i with only 55,000 miles at the time. Computer diagnosis returned "fault 30", "torque convertor slipping". Recommendation was replacement of torque convertor at cost of $2600. Online research of this problem found many complaints of the exact same nature. Due to conflicting advice, the car was not repaired, and has been driven for 3 months and over 3,000 miles without any problems or diminished mileage or performance. The "service engine soon" light that switches on in response to "fault 30" may indicate a non-existent problem that can lead to a costly repair. Meanwhile, the driver is left with a vehicle with a constantly lit "service engine soon" light. This can obviously create problems in selling the car or having it pass a smog check.
