Steering Problems of BMW 535

The contact owns a 2015 BMW 535i. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, a steering wheel image was displayed on the instrument panel. The computer then informed the contact to carefully drive the vehicle to a dealer for service. The contact stated that excessive force was needed to steer the vehicle during the failure. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where a diagnostic test was performed. The contact was informed that the electrical steering rack system was defective and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA to report the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 88,000.

BMW has a known issue with my make and model with the steering knuckle (swivel bearing) and wheel bearings making contact. This has happened now to both my driver and passenger side and it is very scary. Once they make contact, they stay in contact until fixed by the dealer. It significantly affects the ability to handle the vehicle and makes the car shutter, affects the ability to accelerate and brake, and affects overall driving in general. They say it is not a safety issue, but it feels anything but safe when you do not feel in control of your vehicle. All you can hear while driving is the metal-on-metal contact of the two bearings. I paid BMW $800 to fix my passenger side and now I will have to pay that again to fix the drivers side. This shouldn't be my responsibility to pay for my safety in this car. I don't have $800 to fix this, but if I don't I feel like I will get seriously injured and something will break on my car. There is no way you can keep driving the car like this and it not "affect the integrity of the vehicle" as BMW says.

I had to replace the airbag clock spring in my car because of a clicking sound when the steering wheel was turning any direction, sound heard when vehicle was in drive or park. I had about 43,000 miles on the vehicle when the noise started. I had called BMW to see if there was any warranty on this item being it is part of the srs system for the car, and they told me for my vehicle VIN there was not. Being apart of the airbag system I am wondering if there was any safety guidelines or extended warranty I am not being informed of for the part I had to replace 61-31-9-354-047.

The car has been in and out of the shop for various problems from the moment we bought it. The car started making whistling sounds and engine lights would come on and has been seen by BMW rts already 4 times. But most recently my husband was waiting at the light to make a left turn when his steering wheel all of a sudden locked and he could not drive it. So we took it in to get it serviced and was told to immediately contact BMW of north America . 3 weeks later I finally received my car and cause of this steering error reads: eps control unit is faulty. The replaced the eps control unit, basically the steering rack, and the eps control unit failed again! they disconnected the battery to reset the control modules reprogrammed the eps control unit, adjusted the steering angels, initialized all windows and sunroof, performed active 4 wheel alignment. Basically the cars a dud and BMW refuses a buy back.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis but they were unable to duplicate the problem. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 400.

The car will not go straight. It keeps pulling to the right side, my 2012 535i has been aligned twice by BMW and can't correct the problem. My service advisor advised me that I needed to contact BMW of north America and address the issue to them.

The active steering stops working without warning, dramtically changing the handling of the car. It randomly starts & stops working. The dealer first denied that there was a problem, then after 3 visits "fixed" it with updated software, but the problem persists. I have gone off the road, but not hit anything. . . Yet.

The car pulls hard to the right and now shakes above 20mph.

Car has steered to right since it was delivered. BMW has contended that this was a software issue from the beginning. As of 8/24/10 I have been told that the software fix was delivered to BMW na but the fix does not correct the problem. So the car still pulls strongly to the right, is unsafe to drive and should be recalled by BMW!.
