I was just driving my BMW and a airbag light and a malfunction error popped up on my dashboard, that read that the passenger restraint system has malfunctioned. And I was doing some research on what was wrong with my car, and all the forums are indicating that this is a very common issue on these cars due to a bad seat occupancy sensor mat. To fix this you either still have to have an extended warranty if you don’t have one you have to pay upwards of 3,000$ to get this part replaced at a dealer. And me personally I don’t have the money to just spend on car repair of that amount and im sure alot of the other people with this same problem are in the same boat as me. This could be very dangerous because it puts all my passengers at risk if I were to get in a auto collision it would be devastating. I mean this should 100% be a recall because of this is a wide spread problem that puts many many people at risk. I haven’t been to the dealer with it yet, but I can self diagnose because countless people have been reporting on forums and online the same issue with the same error on the dash. My car hasn’t been in an accident yet so I haven’t had it inspected by insurance companies or police. This problem first appeared today and my heart dropped.

1) passenger restraint system malfunction. According to information on the web and several BMW forums, this is a common problem on these vehicles and it is a serious and inherently unsafe issue that should necessitate a recall from the manufacturer. The root cause is typically a malfunction of the passenger seat pad that is utilized by the passenger restraint system. BMW service repair cost is $2,700-$3,000. This is really outrageous given that it's part of the safety restraint system and many BMW 5 series (and likely others) have this problem.
When I have a passenger in the car I will intermittantly get the warning "passenger restraint system malfunction" which will turn off the air bag to the passenger side when driving even when there is a passenger in the car. From forums it sounds like there is a pressure pad in the seat that is a very common malfunction for BMW. This seems like a pretty critical part to ensure the airbags are operational when a passenger is in the car, and feel it should not be as common a problem as it seems to be.
The vehicle throws a “passenger restraint system malfunction” every 5 minutes while driving. Based on discussions on BMW forums, this is a common issue among several models of BMW. The issue seems to be caused by loose wires/sensors beneath a he passenger seat.
My car has around 74k miles on it. I had the following service request warning present itself this last week, 'passenger restraint system malfunction:' on my drive into work in the morning. At first I dismissed the message and closed it to see if it would clear itself. It did not clear. It came back up a couple of minutes later. This time I left it alone. It proceeded to close itself and reopen every minute or so for about 10-15 minutes. Then it turned off and didn't come back on until I started my car later in the day and again the following morning. After taking it into the BMW dealer, the warning light was able to be replicated by the dealer and they've told me it is the seat mat (occupancy sensor) that was faulty. No outside influence appears to be at fault for the failure. Just that the part went bad. This is the diagnostic message given: check control message present for passenger restraint malfunction. Performed vehicle test, faults present regarding passenger front seat occupancy detection. Performed test plan and indcated passenger seat occupancy detection is faulty. Recommend replacing passenger seat occupancy detection. According to the dealer, if this if not fixed the airbag and/or seatbelt won't perform in the event of an accident. This appears to be a very common issue for BMW and similar to a 2017 BMW technical service bulletin mc-10146769-9999. There was no warning of this issue prior to receiving the error message. There has been no opportunity for moisture to compromise the sensor (via window, sunroof or drinks spilled). Nor has any cellphone been stored on the passenger seat as I've read of some reasons provided to other owners with the same error message. This seems to be an ongoing issue with this part for some time and it would seem to be an important issue for BMW to resolve in their design for the safety of the user.

Car had sat for about a week since I had driven it. I opened the driver door, inserted the key, and turned the key to the starting position. It failed to crank after the dash lights lit up and then the driver steering wheel airbag deployed in my face. The car was on flat ground and the temperature was not extremely hot or extremely cold. The previous several times I had driven the car there was no indication of an srs light and the car started perfectly every time.

I needed to move the car after it was sitting for about 3 weeks. It would not start due to the battery was run down. As soon as I started charging the battery, the front passenger airbag exploded causing extensive damage to the dashboard and windshield. Thank god my wife was not sitting in the car. I have not contacted anyone about this. It happened a few hours ago. It is about 93 degrees with very high humidity. I am sending this report because someone could have been killed.
Passenger seat restraint malfunction error code. Code will show fault when no one is in the passenger seat and if the person is light enough in weight, it will also pop up. The issue means that the air bag will not deploy when there is someone in the seat. A huge safety concern and online search shows that this is a very common problem with BMW’s. BMW needs to issue a recall for this and fix the issue. Please note that the date the incident occurred below is an approximation and the code has been continuing since the first code came up.
The passenger restraint system warning along with the airbag warning is displayed on the screen as a defect.
- passenger airbag and passenger restrain system malfunction. - malfunction of passenger airbag not deploying during accident even passenger seat is occupied with recommend weight. - issues has been reported to dealer. In turn dealer responds to as "external factors" with issue could be presence of moisture in the seat. - passenger airbag light illuminates - warning was never consistent. After reporting to dealership warning stays permanent and advised to replace seat mat sensor. - this has been a know issue over a decade and 2017-2018 manufactured BMW 5 series (g30). - this is clearly a poor material and workmanship costing people life's.
The contact owns a 2001 BMW 540i. The contact stated that the dealer had previously performed an unknown air bag recall repair; however, the failure occurred a year after the recall repair was performed. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked with the engine shut off, an explosion was heard. The contact entered the vehicle and noticed that the passenger's side air bag had deployed, which shattered the front windshield. The air bag and an unknown warning light were illuminated. The driver's side air bag deployed a month later. The contact stated that there was no impact on the vehicle that could have caused the air bags to deploy. Additionally, the vehicle made an abnormal sound after it was shut off. The vehicle also needed to be jumpstarted daily due to the battery failing to retain a charge. The dealer was made aware of the failure; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 105,000.
Vehicle reports "passenger restraint system malfunction" upon startup, even when passenger is not in seat. Passenger airbag light turns on. In this state the vehicle defaults to deploying the passenger airbag no matter what, even if passenger weighs less than 45 lbs. BMW of north scottsdale inspected and recommends replacing the passenger seat sensor mat for $3600, not covered outside of factory warranty.
The passanger seat on this car’s seatbelt and airbags have malfioned numerous times. 3/2021 seat belt warning, seat matpad replaced 9/2022 air bag malfunction while driving with a passenger on highway. Once again seat matpad replaced. Car no longer in warranty $2500. It is extremely dangerous that this passanger seat keeps failing. What if I got into an accident on highway and malfunction happened right before accident? many people on BMW post complaining about seat belt warning and air bag malfunction. You can contact BMW, from 2017 until now, the car has neen in shop 4 times with passenger seatbelt and now airbag malfunction warnings. All services done at BMW of bayshore. I have included invoices I kept on this malfunctioned passenger seat.
Passenger seat in 2017 BMW 5 series cars have a well known and not covered fault where in a loud chiming will go off requiring the passenger seatbelt to be buckled. This chime does not stop and continues until the seat belt is buckled. There is nothing in the passengers seat. The noise is very loud and distracting. It occurs at random including driving at highway speeds. Upon bringing this to my dealer's attention they informed me that a service to repair this safety issue would cost over $2,000. I believe this will result in an unnecessary loss of life due to people either a) people fully removing the (sometimes valid) notifications of a no seatbelt warning, or b) an owner becoming alarmed by the sudden and loud chimes, possibly not knowing how to prevent the sound, and causing an accident if required I have a video of the incident (which happens daily now) if required. These issues are well documented on the BMW g30 forums for the 2017 model year.
Front passenger seat malfunction - intermittent on and off warning no risk yet but BMW road aside assist confirmed that air bag might not deploy on passenger side vehicle inspected by irvine BMW and warning or concerns shown, just tried to bill me without root causing the issue. Yes the warning comes up on and off. Intermittent.
Passenger restraint system error in BMW seems to be a common problem. This should be looked over for a recall issue.
While stopped (engine still running) at a gas station, the driver side airbag and driver side side curtain airbag both went off. The battery disconnect feature was also triggered. Very lucky I wasn't driving when this occurred.

The contact owns a 2019 BMW 540i. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning while depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact stated that while attempting to park the vehicle, the failure recurred. The contact continuously depressed the accelerator pedal and the vehicle lunged forward and collided with a barrier and crashed into his neighbor's vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy upon impact. The contact was not treated for any injuries. A police report was not filed. The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic who discovered that the lower section of the accelerator pedal was fractured. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and agreed to pay for a portion of the repair. The contact received a letter that stated that the manufacturer agreed to pay for the accelerator pedal replacement however, by accepting the payment, the manufacturer would absolve themselves of any responsibility of any damages caused by the defective accelerator pedal. The contact had not agreed to the terms of the agreement of the letter. The vehicle was repaired out of pocket. The failure mileage was 18,000.

Received an error message on BMW 540i 2018, with 10600 miles. Purchased as factory demo a little over a month ago. Will be taking it to service soon. However I understand this is a long standing issue with BMW-s that the manufacturer is not correcting or issuing recalls.
For a few months now, my car has been throwing a "passenger restraint system malfunction" error. It happens sporadically and only stays up for between 1 and 5 minutes at a time. It will happen whether the car is moving or not, and even sometimes as soon as I turn the car on. I have been submitting the telecommunications since it started. I tried to have it fixed by thompson BMW, only to be told, like the other user who has this problem on here, that they think moisture is the culprit. I have never had any rain or any other moisture get into the car, and even if it did, this would be a huge safety risk. Thompson refused to fix it and said I would have to come out of pocket for the seat, which is ridiculous. I have been in contact with the service manager, and the car is scheduled to go back to the shop soon. I will update with any developments, but it would appear that mine is not an isolated indecent.
Passenger seat indicator light keeps going off intermittently. Dealer says its a seat pad issue. We identified it in 2018 but dealer was not able to fix it and it continually keeps happening and didn't do anything because dealer did not fix it at that time. Now dealer is re-diagonising it saying it is a different diagnostic code but we have seen the same issue since we got the car. After reasearching this, there was a recall in 2017 with similar issues. It is related to the sensor and if not properly working, the airbags may not deploy when needed. This appears to be a safety feature of the car so should be recalled like previous. Please investigate.
Dealership in concord California has been trying to delay repairing my vehicle airbag even after appointment. Did not even start fixing my vehicle after waiting 5 plus hours.
Takata recall. The contact owns a 2002 BMW 540i. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 15v318000 (air bags); however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The VIN was unknown. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.

My 1999 BMW 540i was just sitting in the driveway and we heard a loud thud. I walked out to the BMW and noticed the passenger airbag had deployed for no reason, shattering the windshield. If this had happened while driving, it could have caused a serious accident.

Bought a BMW with the airbag sign on from a car dealership.
: the contact stated while driving a round rock of 4-5 inches in diameter was drove over and struck the front air dam right of the center. As a result, the driver side curtain air bag and the driver side head protection air bag deployed. The manufacturer was alerted and the contact is waiting for a return phone call.
Note: car could be driven after airbag went off. Engine turned off when bag released.
Driver feels airbags are a problem for short people.
