2 Electrical System problem of the 2018 BMW 540

Failure Date: 01/06/2025

1) passenger restraint system malfunction. According to information on the web and several BMW forums, this is a common problem on these vehicles and it is a serious and inherently unsafe issue that should necessitate a recall from the manufacturer. The root cause is typically a malfunction of the passenger seat pad that is utilized by the passenger restraint system. BMW service repair cost is $2,700-$3,000. This is really outrageous given that it's part of the safety restraint system and many BMW 5 series (and likely others) have this problem.

3 Electrical System problem of the 2018 BMW 540

Failure Date: 11/05/2024

The car's hood sensor did not alert us to the fact that the hood was not properly closed. This resulted in the car's hood opening while being driven, causing the driver to lose sight of the road and crashed into a guardrail in a canyon road (see photo). The car is currently being evaluated by the insurance company for a total loss, and the car may be available for inspection currently, although it may also be taken apart by the auto collision company for their estimate evaluation. The failure of the hood latch mechanism to properly and conspicuously notify us prior to driving the car put us at severe risk of being in a life threatening accident as well as potentially imperiling the lives of other drivers or pedestrians. The vehicle was inspected by BMW after I reported the incident to them, and I have a written report from them. BMW concluded they are "technically confident that no manufacturing defects, faults or malfunctions were present in the vehicle that could have contributed to this incident. " there were no warning messages of the problem prior to the hood opening. We also provided BMW with a video taken after the crash whereby the hood latch on the right side of the car was intentionally left open, and the hood latch on the left side of the car was closed, and demonstrated in this situation that there was no indication on the BMW I drive screen of any notifications to alert the driver of the hood not being completely closed. Despite asking numerous times for BMW to address the findings in that video, which we shared with them at their request, they never provided any response to the video. I would like to share the video with you but am unable to upload mp4 files onto your platform.

6 Electrical System problem of the 2022 BMW 540

Failure Date: 02/03/2023

On Feb. 3, 2023, my wife made a turn into a parking lot. She was driving our 2022 BMW 540. She paused and the engine began to rev up. It then shot forward nearly 50 feet and hurled her over a meridian into another car. She pressed as hard as she could on the brake and suffered a torn meniscus ligament. There were no warning lights and although the car hit front right, no airbags were executed. BMW has not sent an official detailed report from their engineer. BMW advertises brake override so pressing both the brake and accelerator would not result in this event.

The vehicle was at a complete stop, when the gas pedal was tapped to move forward slightly the vehicle suddenly accelerated out of control. There was an attempt to apply the brakes, but the vehicle continued to accelerate and "drive train malfunction" began to flash on the dashboard of the vehicle. The vehicle proceeded to accelerate as it jumped a curb, crashed into a ditch, before finally becoming lodged in a fence and coming to a complete stop when half of the vehicle was lifted off of the ground. The driver of the vehicle suffered a fractured back as a result of the incident. We have reported this incident to BMW and are awaiting a response from the manufacturer. The vehicle has been inspected by the driver's insurance and, while we do not have a report from them yet, the vehicle was totaled.

13 Electrical System problem of the 2002 BMW 540

Failure Date: 09/30/2012

I was driving in stop and go traffic when I noticed the steering felt a little stiffer than usual. After about 5 miles and better flowing traffic I pulled into a restaurant for dinner when my upper radiator hose exploded. I pulled into a stall and opened the hood to inspect what happened. The hose was very apparent and after further investigation I noticed the power steering pumps pulley at a very sharp angle compared to linear with the serpentine belt. I can only assume that from the bracket on the pump breaking, it caused a chain reaction of events. First the bracket brocket putting the pump at a steep angle n forcing the belt to go off track which then caused all the other accessories to be disabled including the water pump which overheated the car.

14 Electrical System problem of the 2002 BMW 540

Failure Date: 07/19/2012

I went out to my BMW 540i and found the driver's power seat all the way back in the horizontal position. I did not leave it this way, so this was confusing to me. When I attempted to move it back upright into a comfortable driving position, it did not respond- the seat was dead. I could not move it manually, either. I was forced to drive the car a short distance to drop my son off at an activity, so I decided to drive it and lean forward while driving. My plan was to take the car to my local BMW mechanic later that night and drop it off to be repaired. My son and I were only two minutes into our drive, I was leaning forward, and he said "do you smell smoke?" I did smell it, and was looking around to see what was wrong. Then my son said "dad, your seat is on fire!" I looked down, and saw flames coming out from under my seat. We pulled the car over and put out the fire with his water bottle. The heated seats were not being used, this happened on July 19th, during the summer. My local BMW shop is telling me this is a $3100 repair. The part in question that caused the fire, per the claims adjuster, is the "general module. " I understand the car is 10 years old, but it simply blows my mind that a car can randomly catch on fire internally like this. BMW north America is not taking ownership to this situation, and has offered no help.

Like 80% of owners of BMW 540i, 740i, 740il, x5 owners from years 1999-2003 suffer from factory defect variable valve timing units or as BMW calls it vanos. 17 Electrical System problem of the 1999 BMW 540

Failure Date: 05/11/2011

My transmission would not accelerate or move. I had the trans rebuild and 2 years later the same problem. The trans has lost gears 1-3 and reverse, multistate repaired the trans again 2013, ifor the second time, it never worked after repairs. The engine light stays on, BMW says I need new trans and engine. When I looked up recalls for 540i, it states the same trans problem and it should be replaced. When I look up engine there are known engine problems with 540i, not my VIN. I also have electical issues, which have a recall on 540i, but not my VIN. Also issues with coolant, which is another known issue, but not my VIN. I have tried to get BMW to diagnose, but they only recommend replacing all parts at my expense, even though there is a history of these type of issues with the 540i, 1999 cars. I want BMW to replace all know issue parts at their expense and they have refused due to my VIN, not willing to add VIN to the issue. All issues with my car are known issues for 540i 1999 cars.

22 Electrical System problem of the 1999 BMW 540

Failure Date: 04/02/2004

During a down shift, my car sometimes jump forward a foot or so and makes a thump down shifting noise. This forces me to apply the break quickly. Just a week ago, I hit a curve because of this defect and the bottom bumper cover of the car got hit and became cracked! luckily this problem is rare. This is about 4th failure in a span of 10 months. For about 10 months, my car also stalls (engine loses power) during a slowdown. Usually this happens when I slow to make a right turn. I nearly got into an accident few times this month because my car stalled in an intersection during a turn. This occurs about 0-2 times per month and each time I take the car to the dealer, Im informed that they see no problems or the problem is fixed. Ive reported this complaint to BMW customer service and asked if they are aware of this problem. Theyve told me no.
