Equipment Problems of BMW 540

Recurring system failures: my vehicle has exhibited intermittent and unpredictable system malfunctions, including engine stalling, braking issues, and electronic system failures. Sunroof exploded, glass shards everywhere. This has to be a manufacturer defect.

On g models of the BMW 5 series. Ac coil leaks r1234yf freon which causes safety issue due to the gas being exposed into the cabin of the car and to the atmosphere. Dealerships wants $5000-7000 for this repair as the whole dash needs to come out. This is almost a guaranteed failure and BMW has failed to recall for this fix. This issue arises usually at 50k-70k miles. There are no lights that come out everything will work but ac will not.

The vehicle throws a “passenger restraint system malfunction” every 5 minutes while driving. Based on discussions on BMW forums, this is a common issue among several models of BMW. The issue seems to be caused by loose wires/sensors beneath a he passenger seat.

Radiator grill does not open when running. It remains in the close position. It started with the engine symbol that appeared on the dash.

Backup camera is blacking out. Very dangerous. There was a recall for 2018-19 BMW's but not for 2017 Bmws. Forums also report a lot of problems with this reverse camera.

This car is currently subject to a ntsb ordered recall related to the back up camera and the lighting level (night vision) of the rear safety camera. After my BMW dealer "fixed" it last week, it is noticeably darker than when the car was new and hence less safe under nighttime driving conditions. I have taken the car back and the service manager has indicated this is the dictated fix; I do not believe this is (a) safe or (b) sager than when the car was new in October 2018, but is less safe. I suggest a ntsb investigation and additional fix. This occurs at night, in a dark area and while the car is both stationary and slowly backing up. According to BMW literature, under appropriate conditions, the driver is to be alerted by means of vibrations in the steering wheel of either unintentional lane changes or vehicles in the driver's blind spot while signaling a turn. In my 540i, I can detect no steering wheel vibrations at all with the �light� and �medium� vibration settings. With the �strong� setting, I can sometimes detect a very slight vibration � if I pay close attention � but it is very hard to distinguish from road surface feedback. In any event, the "intelligent safety system" is not alerting the driver of potentially hazardous conditions as it is supposed to do. This results in unsafe driving conditions. My dealer and BMW have been unable to resolve this issue.

The rear cross-traffic/pedestrian alert system is dysfunctional. I have had two other vehicles with this feature and am quite familiar with it. This vehicle is incapable of effectively detecting and warning of approaching rear traffic and/or (and worse) pedestrians. Repeated efforts to have my BMW dealer address it have been fruitless. BMW USA simply circles me back to the same dealer who is unable or unwilling to address the problem. The net result is "safely technology" that, if relied upon, has the potential to do more harm than good.

Started the car and began to drive out of driveway when I heard a noise in the engine. Shut down engine and popped the hood- found drive belt shredded because power steering pump snapped and let loose into tension pulley- luckily I was not at speed and belt did not fail- otherwise catastrophic engine failure would occur along with loss of power steering.
