Ten problems related to air bag have been reported for the 2004 BMW 5 Series. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The following message came on the screen of the idrive of the car when my 76 year old mother was placed in the passenger seat after returning to the parking lot after her's doctor visit: "passenger restraint system malfunction". It has been on since.
The contact owns a 2004 BMW 5 Series. The contact stated that the air bag and passenger restraint lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the front passenger seat occupant detection map needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 08v384000 (air bags). The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure and current mileage was 79,000.
I own a 2004 BMW 530i. As I was pulling out of my drive-way, the passenger restraint malfunction light appeared and has not gone off. I took it to the dealer, before I became aware of the recall, and he told me it was because I placed my purse in the passenger seat. After searching his database, he told me it was not under warranty and therefore, I would have to pay the total cost to repair it. I would believe this if my vehicle wasn't a 2004 and I have been placing my purse in the passenger seat since I first purchased it brand new in 2004!.
Restraint system fault.
BMW refused to fix the NHTSA action number: ea08001 and NHTSA campaign id number : 08v384000 front passenger air bag warning.
Failure of the "vehicle center satellite module".
Passenger restraint malfunction illuminated on the dash. It indicates that the seat belt lock and/or airbags may not work in an event of an accident. When I called BMW, they told me that my car is not covered under this recall and it will depend on my local dealership if I will have to pay for the repair.
The problem started about half a year ago when the passenger air bag on/off lamp illuminated for a couple of minutes and then went off, all with the passenger present in the car with the seat belt on. A few days ago the air bag warning lamp and the passenger air bag on/off lamp illuminated while there was no passenger in the car. The message indicated that the air bag may not work. . . These symptoms look very similar to the problem identified in one of the recalls for this car; however when I called BMW, they indicated that my car is not part of this recall and I will have to pay to fix this.
BMW 545i system failure 1. Braking and dynamic-response 2. Passenger restraint system.
BMW 5 2004: when the passenger seat is vacant a warning message (that the passenger airbag is off) is continuously displayed at eye level in the roof console. This is very distracting, especially when driving at night. The message should only come on when the passenger seat is occupied and the airbag is not functioning.
