1 Equipment problem of the 2002 BMW 5 Series

Failure Date: 01/15/2019

I have a 2002 525i which I drove to work on January 15, 2019. After being in work for 15 minutes, I was notified that the entire front end of my car was engulfed in flames. The top of the hood, under the hood, and under the front end of my car was completely on fire. I have read about the pvc recall for 2007-2011, but I also read "BMW had looked into heat damage involving the heating and cooling system as early as 2007 but stepped up its analysis work in September. " that was from a chronology report provided by BMW to NHTSA, and quoted from abcnews. Go. Com. What this tells me is BMW didn't look back any earlier than 2007. It was terrifying, and thank god no one was hurt. What is BMW doing about this? and what is my next course of action?.

2 Equipment problem of the 2012 BMW 5 Series

Failure Date: 02/28/2018

I had an issue with the timing chain on this vehicle. I do believe this is a safety issue. Car fails with very little warning while the car is being driven. It is not a question of maintenance but of a specific manufacturing fault. How would one know of a defect until something goes wrong. Then the manufacturer doesn't take blame. Manufacturer knew about the problem but did not let owners know about the problem until something happens while driving. BMW has since redesigned the engine but what about the existing cars with the issue?.

6 Equipment problem of the 2010 BMW 5 Series

Failure Date: 07/09/2014

I was traveling on freeway to the airport when my wife and I heard a loud boom and suddenly heard loud airflow. I pulled off to side of road and inspected car. The sunroof had exploded and shattered. The car traveling behind me also stopped to inspect his vehicle because of flying glass. The cabin door to the sunroof had luckily had been closed so as my wife and I avoided the flying glass. When we returned from our trip I took vehicle to dealer, the vehicle was under warranty. The dealer said this part was not covered and would cost $3600 to repair. We goggled Bmw5 series exploding sunroofs and discovered we were not the only ones to experience exploding sunroofs. Surely BMW knows about this potentially grievous problem. We called BMW north America and filed a complaint with the resolution department. The next day BMW to my chagrin was willing to pay 50 percent of the repair cost. I expected full coverage. I needed the car back and excepted offer vowing never to buy a BMW again. I expected to become whole and not expecting BMW ignoring the problem thus endangering their drivers for economic reasons. Once again goggle BMW 5 Series expolding sunroofs. I took vehicle to lexes dealer and traded it. I wanted nothing to do with that car. Unfortunately I own another Bmw5. What I want from NHTSA is to inspect the problem and I still want to be compensated for the entire cost of the problem not just 50 percent.

8 Equipment problem of the 2011 BMW 5 Series

Failure Date: 12/11/2013

The driver door does not shut intermittently the door release, door unlock/lock, door handle does not release the state. The car won't move because the door is not locked, it can take upwards of a few hours of tinkling to get this going again. The dealer has diligently changed so many parts and its not that they are not trying to remedy the situation. Is anyone else experiencing this out there. My 4 yr warranty will end in June and I am vvery concerned how I am going to resolve this issue.

9 Equipment problem of the 2011 BMW 5 Series

Failure Date: 08/08/2013

As I waited for my wife in my apartment parking space, my rear windshield shattered completely with a loud bang. I was completely taken by surprise and frightened by the noise. I was lucky not to be in motion at the time of the shattering. No foreign objects impacted my vehicle or the rear windshield.

10 Equipment problem of the 2008 BMW 5 Series

Failure Date: 05/14/2013

On or about may 2013 I was traveling at 60mph on the freeway when suddenly I heard a loud bang sound and my vehicle came to an automatic stop. Scared as vehicle behind me screeched and turn away avoiding me. I remained in the middle of the road for approximately 30 minutes before the vehicle restarted and I traveled fearfully to complete my assignment. Same day on my return home vehicle stopped about 3 times but I drove straight to dealership. Without inspecting my vehicle I was told my alternator and battery was gone. I was quoted very high amount but something told me a bad alternator and battery would not start a vehicle so I offered to take my vehicle home. My vehicle stayed home for about 4 months without use only warm ups reverse and park. I did extensive research to avoid the frivolous amount the dealers quoted and found that the integrated module (ivm) was bad. I got it for $144 and replaced it and problem was fixed after 4 months. Until April 2014 I drove the out to work and barely two miles away from home I stopped at a traffic light and when released the vehicle sounded a huge banged sound this with transmission malfunction light active brake lights and several other lights on dash board. Once again I survived being ran over in the early morning rush. Took vehicle to BMW dealership. Told gear shifter was bad and replaced for $915 and thereafter I received a call the transmission was out. I was advised cost will be $15000 then later that it cannot be fixed and advice to sale it as is to some guy. I owe $17900 on vehicle. Called BMW north America to complain was told new transmission cost $9200 and I'm asked to pay $7400 best deal. There's no reason for transmission on 2008 to go out. Since dealers took my car they gave me a rental for 4 days and took it from me but kept my vehicle for additional 2 weeks and are still holding it calling to accept deal.

11 Equipment problem of the 2011 BMW 5 Series

Failure Date: 07/09/2011

There are 3 major issues. 1. Vehicle tends to veer to the right. Feeling is quite like a vehicle that hasn't been aligned for a while. 2. The most dangerous. Upon acceleration and/or at low speed, the vehicle randomly jerks forward without any notice- making it too late for the driver to slam the brakes. If your vehicle is standing three feet behind another vehicle in stop and go traffic, you can easily crash and rear end into the car in front of you. And of course, you will be sued for not keeping your distance. This can easily cause some serious injuries. 3. Vehicle wobbles as if the tires were not balanced. There are clearly unknown defects that can not be located. Took it to the local BMW dealer, they keep ascribing it to "normal" characteristics and they keep informing me that Bmws are built that way, they are now sportier. However, to any new owner, it is now deadlier. The local BMW dealer also state unless they vehicle doesn't inform them about the issue they can't do anything. Its more like, until someone doesn't sue them is when they will do something about it. BMW seriously needs to look into this issue immediately before a class action lawsuit begins against them.

12 Equipment problem of the 2010 BMW 5 Series

Failure Date: 07/01/2011

When the temperature hits 100 degrees as it does in the desert 5 months or so per year, the interior cabin fills up with very harmful gas fumes. We owned a 2008 and the same situation. As a result of this and problems with the fuel pump on the 2008, the dealership bought the car back. My husband really wanted another BMW and when he was looking at buying the 2010 he was told all the problems including the gas fumes had been resolved. Not so. The car has been back to service twice for the gas fumes and no one can shed any light on the situation. When this happens you cannot drive the car as the fumes will knock you out. The car has to sit on the driveway and air out for a few days. You can't park in the garage as the gas fumes enter the house. For a car of this caliber it is not acceptable. Plus it is very dangerous to your health.

13 Equipment problem of the 2011 BMW 5 Series

Failure Date: 12/04/2010

I bought a 2011 BMW 535i on November 30, 2010. On December 4, 2010, I experienced car trouble. The engine malfunction, and reduce power warning lights came on. The car shutdown completely, but not before shaking very sharply. This all occurred in about 15 seconds, while I was driving. BMW response was "safe mode". On December 9, 2010 the vehicle was being repaired again for the same issues, they replaced a fuel sensor. On December 30, 2010, the car was being serviced again, they replaced the high and low fuel pumps. After being driven home by the service manger of BMW just to insure that the car was fixed, it broke down again on him on December 31, 2010. They replaced the low pressure fuel pump again, the second time in two days. They returned the vehicle to me on January 13, 2011. On March 17, 2010 the vehicle was being serviced again for long crank time, and for not start sometimes at all. I am also a previous owner of recalled 335, which I traded for this vehicle. Out of the five times that this vehicle has been service, two of those times it broke down while in traffic coming to a complete stop, once while on a freeway. This vehicle is dangerous. I would ask that the NHTSA take this matter seriously. There are many more complaints like this on bimmerfest. Com, and also the internet. BMW will not resolve this issue. They are playing with my family's life, other BMW owners, and other motorist that occupy the roads with BMW customers. This vehicle is a hazard. This problem has been occurring for almost five years now. My opinion as a multiple BMW owner is that BMW is operating with malice at this point. Please you all are our only hope!.

14 Equipment problem of the 2008 BMW 5 Series

Failure Date: 09/02/2010

2008 BMW 535i - car has had 3 fuel pumps, 3 separate visits for plugs / injectors, last visit for replaced fuel pump created large fuel leak in car which resulted in tow to dealer. Engine malfunction light problem. Hpfp, repeated engine program.

15 Equipment problem of the 2011 BMW 5 Series

Failure Date: 07/26/2010

I bought a 2011 BMW 535i 3 weeks ago. Upon driving on local streets, the car stopped abruptly from 30mph to 0mph. My car has under 2000 miles on it. Stuck in the middle of an intersection, with "fuel pump malfunction", and "engine malfunction" on the onboard dash. I hit my head on the steering wheel when this occurred. I was also carrying a 5 gallon square container of water that was capped and sealed in the trunk. During the abrupt stop of the car, about 1/2 a gallon of water spilled into the trunk. After being towed to shelly BMW and talking to them the next day, they said it was my fault and that the water shorted out the components in the trunk. #1. The water spilled into the trunk after the car abruptly stopped. #2. I was almost rear-ended by the cars behind me when the car went from 30mph to 0mph. The car did not stall and slowly come to a stop. . . . It basically locked up and stopped. . . . Causing me to hit my head on the steering wheel. Shelly BMW is now telling me that I have to pay $2600 to repair/replace the modules that are damaged. #3. This incident occurred on July 26, 2010. #4. Irvine police department was dispatched to the site to make sure that I was not hit from other cars as I sat in the middle of an intersection for 1. 5 hours waiting for a tow truck. I am considering seeking legal advice. This issue is also filed with BMW north America in which I am still waiting for them to contact me.

16 Equipment problem of the 2011 BMW 5 Series

Failure Date: 06/01/2010

2011 BMW 335i convertible. Navigation system constantly almost always takes you to the wrong place. This is very dangerous in that it can take me to very dangerous and deadly places. BMW should be made to make the navigation system work accurately or replace the system with one that works. It fails to find locations which are even in their own provided "points of interest"!!! this navigation system is too dangerous for us to use. We don't want to risk our lives in miami, FL and all other unknown places which you may enter into the equipment. After all that is what the navigation system is for - to find places you don't know where they are!! I have contacted my miami dealer (south BMW motors) and ig burton BMW dealer in milford, DE. Ig burton said they fixed it but it was not fixed and I notified them immediately. Neither dealer cares about this problem, it seems. Thank you for making BMW correct this dangerous situation with their equipment.

17 Equipment problem of the 2008 BMW 5 Series

Failure Date: 02/09/2010

My BMW 535xi started having fuel pump issues starting around 14 months after purchase, at 12,000 miles. The first time it went into safety mode, casing it to slow down to a snails pace. A new fuel pump was installed. The second time it would not start in a parking lot after turning it off for 10 minutes after a 20 minute drive. I called road side assist and they sent a technician who was able to get it started. He told me to take to the dealer but it should be fine to drive home. I left the lot and within 3 minutes it completely seized and lost all power while accelerating in the left lane. My 11 year old daughter and I were in the car. I am thankful we survived. I called the technician back and he convinced me to drive the car with him following to the dealer (approx 3 miles). When I complained to BMW they did not showed no concern that we were put in harms way. In this instance the fuel temperature sensor/pressure sensor had a permanent failure. At 19,000 miles, the check engine light went on and I took it in to the service department. They suspected the fuel pump but could not replicate the check engine light, so corporate would not allow replacement. Again at 20,370 mile, check engine plus "cold start not running on all cylinders" no action because not tripping corporate specifications. At, 21,092, high pressure pump permanent malfunction. Engine was flooded with fuel. Five days and 100 miles later, the engine flooded again. This time the fuel injector was leaking and all the spark plugs were soaked with gas and half were not working. At that time (Nov. 2010) I asked BMW to take the car back. BMW agreed to a "trade assist" that will cost us an additional $33,000 to be get a new car. We do no understand how after almost killing us we cannot get out of this car without spending more money. We refuse to sell our problem to someone else.

18 Equipment problem of the 2008 BMW 5 Series

Failure Date: 11/06/2009

The vehicle has been hard starting; most recently the engine stopped completely and suddenly while driving at high speeds during morning traffic from new hampshire to boston, MA. And had to be towed. There was possibly some indication of gasoline odor inside the vehicle. The BMW dealership reports numerous complaints about the fuel delivery system in its late model vehicles yet I have had no warnings or recall notice from the factory. Two attempts were made to correct this condition but the problem still exists . The wagon will visit the shop for a third time tomorrow attempting to correct the malfunction.

19 Equipment problem of the 2008 BMW 5 Series

Failure Date: 11/01/2008

1. Vehicle loses power 2. Engine malfunction light comes one. 11/2008, 2/2009 & 4/2010 3. Gas fuel pump replaced 3 times in 18 months.

20 Equipment problem of the 2008 BMW 5 Series

Failure Date: 08/24/2008

Purchased new 535i 8/22/08. With less than 400 mile, received engine malfunction-power reduced warning while driving at interstate speed. Limped to dealer, who had car for 4. 5 days. 1st question: what type of fuel? shell. Response: may have to much ethanol. Service found an engine mis-fire code; replaced injector and swapped coils to validate inj. Replacement. 2nd occurrence at 3200 miles, again at hi-way speeds. Mis-fire code again found by dealer service. Injectors were "swapped"; I'm not sure to what end. The car was also "reprogrammed". I get the impression that service people do not know what is truly causing the problem. Or else that they are trying not to commit. Now have approx. 4100 miles w/o any recurrence. Apparently this is an issue that is not just with the 5 Series, but the 3 series also, both types with the n54 turbo charged 3 liter engine. First fixes involved the high pressure fuel pump, now they are appear to be swapping/replacing injectors and reprogramming the ecu. It is also a common point of discussion in on-line BMW forums when searched under engine malfunction.

21 Equipment problem of the 2006 BMW 5 Series

Failure Date: 06/11/2006

Car started beeping uncontrollably than service light reported a malfunction in the air pages and seat belt restraints on the passenger side seats. Dealer diagnosed problem as defected sensors. Had to wait for part then return for another service trip and wait for complimentary car. Its amazing when your in a car service is an emergency they never have loaner available. I depend on my car, so it is very difficult to wait for service. Again with no explanation they also had to update computer now many new function that were not working are now functioning like the blue tooth. Side lights that I didn't even know where there.
