BMW 650 owners have reported 8 problems related to seats (under the seats category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of BMW 650 based on all problems reported for the 650.
The BMW 650i gran coupe experienced a trunk release failure on 6/4/2023. The emergency release handle is in the very rear of the trunk. The only release levers to fold the seats down are also in the very rear of the trunk. The only way to access the trunk is thru a small opening behind the armrest. With a loaded trunk there is no reasonable way to open the trunk once the electronic release system has failed. This can be very dangerous, for example, medication locked inside the trunk and inaccessible. There are many worse possible scenarios.

While driving my passenger seat back burnt my wife's back and was smoking. I turned the seat cooling off and it stopped.

We have almost died in this car twice. The first time in 2017, I was driving down a city street and noticed smoke coming out of the hood. Immediately pulled over, and opened the hood to find starter in flames. Called the fire department to extinguish the fire and the car spent a week in the shop getting "repaired". This past week, again while driving on a city street, I smelled what smelled like burning metal. Pulled over immediately and looked under the hood however nothing was there. Felt a slight burn on myself and discovered that my heated seat had burned a a half dollar size hole if not bigger into the seat and burned through my expensive jacket and a sweater! this car is unsafe. After doing some research, we learned that thousands of BMW's catch on fire every year. We spent money on a luxury vehicle for more safety and comfort, not a death trap. I am scared to drive this car and have not done so since the last fire (burned seat).

On Saturday, February 11, 2017, at approximately 4:30 pm, I had driven about 1/2 mile from home when I began to smell something burning. I was on a two-lane highway, in a 55 mph zone (e. Colonial hwy, going from leesburg to hamilton). I looked around me, inside the car, and saw nothing that would produce that kind of smell. I wondered if I was smelling something outside. Then, within seconds of that thought, I started to see smoke rising, originating from under my left elbow. I was still driving, and could not see the source of the smoke. But, the smell of burning and the stream of smoke continued to grow stronger. At this point, I was approximately a mile from my home and I pulled into a parking lot (the harmony park and ride lot). I got out of the car and saw a burn mark in the lower third of the driver's seat back, in the panel of the seat nearest to the window. The mark was slightly larger than the burn mark a cigarette might make. Inside the burn mark, I could see a small, red, ember-like light glowing. I then turned off the engine. I could no longer see the ember-like light, and eventually, the smoke stopped. I called the service department of the BMW dealership in fairfax for guidance. They suggested I have the car towed to them for diagnostics. I followed their advice. Though the technician that I spoke with hadn't handled or heard of a situation like this, he suspected the lumbar heating pad in the seat back had malfunctioned.

I was driving down the highway when I smelled something funny. A minute later I felt an extremely hot sensation on my left leg. I reached down and the seat was so hot that it burnt my hand from the brief contact. I pulled over to find that the heated seat element had burnt a hole in the leather seat as well as burnt a hole in my wool coat. Ironically, this occurred in my last BMW as well, a 2004 3-series, just to a lesser extent. I did not receive burns from that incident, it just melted the left side of my seat.

I started my car turned on both heated seats and begin seeing smoke and smelled distinct burning. . . . I pulled out of my garage and immediately pulled to the curve. My left side drivers seat was smoking and I realized my pants had a hole burned in them along with a hole in my seat. I have contacted BMW but to date no response back from them. This is a dangerous flaw in the BMW and needs further action taken. I could have been burned or this could have caused me to have a serious accident. Further my very low mileage car could have been consumed in flames.
Smelt smoke in the car and realized it was coming from the drivers seat. The seat warmer overheated to the point it burnt thru the seat and was causing the smoke and you could see the wire was glowing red hot.
The passenger seat mat sensor is defective and cannot tell when a passenger is seated, therefore, not allowing a passenger air bag to deploy. The srs air bag warning light appears. The passenger seat has not been tampered with, rarely been sat in, and the defect cannot be attributed to any error on my part.
