Automatic Transmission Problems of BMW 740

I own a 2000 BMW 740il and the reverse went out on the transmission. As I researched this issue I found that it is a common problem and known issue to BMW. I have kept the recommended maintenance and want to lodge a complaint as I believe this to be a recall issue.

I just received an email giving me an update on consumer complaints. I own a 2000 BMW 740i and the reverse also went out on the transmission and I had to have it rebuilt. I believe that being "a top of the line automobile" the reverse should not be failing.

I purchased this car in may 2009 and shortly after in the summer, August early September, the reverse started to act up. Sometimes I had to wait a short period for the reverse to actully engage. It started to occur more frequently and I had it inspected. The result was that the transmission was the issue. I had the transmission rebuilt in December which costed just over $4000. It is now running fine but ii was super irritated since this automobile was supposed to be a luxury vechicle and not a lemon. BMW should have to compensate customers for these types of issue as I believe a transmission should not fail in this type of car that is supposed to have such a great reputation.

Premature wear of the ring gear lead to my reverse not working in my transmission. I had my transmission replaced at aamco transmissions.

2001 BMW 740i - the transmission without any warning just stopped going in reverse. After research I find out this is an issue rampant among BMW's and owners with this transmission. Please help - it seems as if BMW is aware but refuses to address this issue. They have even developed a ring fix to replace production parts that fail - however will still not stand behind an obvious and unsafe situation.

About November of 2007 I began to experience a delay in engaging reverse. I went to have the car serviced for this and the problem was diagnosed as a possible valve body issue with replacement of the transmission being the best solution because they were not sure and it was the only way to be safe. March of 2008 the reverse gear completely failed and from that point until present the car will not reverse. I took the car to a different repair shop for a second opinion and I was told the same thing, "replace the transmission" to be safe. I even contacted BMW of north America about this problem.

Transmission problems - 1998 740il. I bought a cpo BMW 740il with 35,000 miles. Now I have 65,600 miles on the car and I too am having issues with the transmission. While the car was under cpo warranty, I had taken the car to the dealership when I was getting a check trans message, which I have service records for. The dealership refused to acknowledge the error, saying that they could not read the code on the computer. Well now the transmission won\'t go in park or reverse and needs to be replaced and the car is out of cp warranty. Damage resulting = looks like I have to pay $7,000 for a transmission that should have been fixed while still under warranty, as the warranty on the car has expired. The car is not worth more than $12,000 now.

Rear transmission went out at 99,000 miles.

The contact states there is a NHTSA recall campaign 99v005000 concerning automatic transmission. This vehicle is experiencing the same problems as indicated in the recall, but it is not included in the recall due to VIN. The contact will repair the vehicle at his own expense. Also, he experienced transmission problems previously. The dealer repaired a leak in the transmission under warranty.
