Equipment Problems of BMW 740

My car is about 1. 5 yers old, BMW 740i. I have been towed back to the dealer twice now for the same issue. I live in illinois and work in milwaukee, wisconsin, so I drive on the expressway a lot. I received the following message on my display while driving at 75-80 mph. The message is “ inability to drive. ” I have received this 3 times. When it occurs the steering is more difficult and, I am told starts to shut down major systems, so needlessly to say quite unnerving and I had difficulty getting onto the shoulder. The first occurrence was last year in October (2024). I was afraid to drive the car when everyone else was travelling at high speeds. So had it towed to dealer. The dealer did not seem to understand this message and why it happened, and even what would happen. They did a software upgrade and told me it was fixed. On [xxx] it happened again, same message although different look with the software upgrade, and had to be towed. I don’t trust the car since no one can tell me why this is happening and what it does. The dealer said they are not familiar with it. I told them we have read online that others have had this happen, but no recalls or information. If this message is in the software there has to be a data dictionary that explains, 1) what triggers it, 2) why, 3) what does it do, and 4) can it be disabled. No one seems to know, and it is putting me at risk of an accident, that no one understands. I am afraid to drive the car. If I am in an accident because of this BMW should libel. The car had been running properly for months/years without any complaints. Last week while driving on a surface street, after a turn, the car that was going at about 40 mph, suddenly started accelerating by itself to may be 70 or 80 mph, this confused and shocked the driver and to avoid hitting the cars in front, the driver crashed the car into a tree. The car was totaled, fortunately the driver did not have any serious injuries. Talked to a private mechanic if there is a way to find out what happened. He said that based on the amount of damage and the fact that the car most probably cannot be started, he would not really be able to find what happened. Are there other BMW's that have had such issues.

On January 22, 20222, I was traveling down highway 400 in sandy springs, georgia and my left (driver's side) // rear tire exploded and I almost lost control of the vehicle. The main part of the tread completely separated from the rest of the tire, but I was able to recover it from down in the woods. I have not taken it to a mechanic or tire shop yet, so I still have the rim that has the remnants of the sidewall attached to it as well as the tread portion of the tire for inspection. I didn't hit a pothole and wasn't aware of any object that I ran over. It was a sunny day; the pavement was dry and it was about 45 degrees. The tires were filled with nitrogen. I inspected all tires before I started driving and I didn't see anything unusual or previous damage. There were no warning lamps or messages before my tire exploded. The car did sustain damage to the driver's side rear bumper cover and possibly suspension components. All four tires were purchased from costco in September 2020 when the vehicle had 113,429 miles. The vehicle currently has 114,668 miles on the odometer and approx. Had 114,648 miles on it at the time of the incident. All four tires are michelin pilot sport all season 4. The front has 235/50zr 18 and the rear has // had 255/45zr 18.

My backup camera doesn't work (engage) when the car is in reverse. Anytime the car is placed in reverse the backup camera should come on. I have other cameras that I can't access, but the backup camera is safety related.

On July 30, I was driving at 35mph on a major road in pinetop/lakeside, arizona when the sunroof, that was in the vent position, exploded inward showering me and a passenger in shattered glass. It was not struck by any object prior to the explosion. Due to extensive damage to the sunroof cassette, the repair is about $7,000.

The sunroof exploded out while driving about 45mph. Most of the glass exited the vehicle above but many shards of sharp glass sprayed all four passengers. All four passengers received minor cuts. No rock or other foreign object was observed impacting the vehicle. The glass exploded out not in. The outside temperature was about 7 degrees f. This occurred on highway 99 between whistler bc and squamash bc on February 3, 2019.

Active pdc fails on multiple occasions. A technical service bulletin was released in March 2017 by BMW and new software was downloaded. Despite the new software downloaded to vehicle there continues to be incidents post that when the active pdc fails to activate. BMW continues to claim the feature works as designed but there is never any explanation by the dealer why it is by design. Foreman at the BMW dealership where he witnessed multiple failures of it argued that I can see the car is going to hit another car or an object so why is it necessary to have it activate? this argument does not make sense, because the feature should work, and if you know car is going to hit another car or object then you should expect feature to activate otherwise why is the feature. Dealership service department would not accept to document the failures in the service order or the arguments foreman made.

Navigation system fails (computer), I checked online seem a lot car owners have a similar problems which not effecting navigation only also effect the audio system and drain the battery. Mechanic advice me to replace the battery and I did, problem still the same. For a high end car with low miles seems not right. A new computer navigation system cost over $2000. 00. Seems the german design those systems to fail to keep their business going.

I was driving to work and was passing a truck in front of me and heard a loud pop. I thought my windshield had been hit by something until I saw that there was no damage, so I kept driving. My car began to overheat so I slowed down. When I got to work I looked at my car and saw that the hood had an almost hole in it so I looked under the hood and found my belts gone and damage to the underside of the hood and lining. A fellow employee looked at it for me and we discovered that my fan had been obliterated and a great deal of damage had been done to my car. I called and had a tow truck to pick it up after calling my insurance company and was told I couldn't file a claim as there was no accident that happened with the car. I later had it fixed at a place called terry's car care center that cost me close to $1300 to fix.
