BMW 740 owners have reported 14 problems related to radiator (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I got engine malfunction light on two separate occasions on my BMW; on each occasion the car was sent to dealership for repair to find that the upper and lower radiator blinds are at fault and this required replacement. The 2016 BMW 740i is equipped with a front grille where the vents are covered by blinds that open when the car is started and closed when the car is turned off allowed some time for warm air to come out of the engine compartment.

I was driving my BMW 740il on 2-17-2015 when after getting onto the highway and accelerating, there was a loud boom noise and black pieces shot out onto the road in front of me. I immediately got off the first exit only to find that 1. ) the car wouldn't stop after I applied the brakes, and 2. ) the car continued to accelerate even when my foot was off the accelerator pedal. I went through two intersections, unable to stop, before turning into a big driveway where I set the shifter into reverse, which slowed the car down, and then I put it into park. Steam was shooting out from under the hood and when I checked underneath it, I saw the blades of the fan behind the radiator had all been stripped off the rotor with pieces violently scattered around the engine area. Also, the hose to the coolant reservoir became detached and the hood received two dents from the inside when the fan exploded. The car has since been towed, and repairs have not yet been started. The whole situation was unbelievable. The vehicle had been in tip-top shape and there were no previous signs that anything was inherently wrong. Luckily nothing happened but people could have been seriously hurt or worse by what happened on that day. Please don't hesitate to contact me should you wish to inspect the vehicle prior to repairs. I also took several pictures of the damage.

I bought this vehicle in 2002 at 96k miles it has been nothing but problems, since buying vehicle, I have had water pump failure twice, replaced radiator twice , hoses & rings. . Two battery's front bumper, catalytic convertor l. Bay, changed. . Brakes & rotors changed Nov. 11. . . . . . 3 weeks later as I was driving home from work . . I got a transmission failure. . And the car stopped in the middle of the road. . The car goes in reverse but not forward. . I have only driven this car 15 -16k miles since owning the vehicle I have had all these chronic repairs. . I'm distraught that I could have been in a serious car crash. . Not sure what to do?. . But accrd. . To many BMW owners I find on the net there is a chronic problem w/ transmission failure BMW should be held accountable. . It is dangerous and unsafe for drivers there needs to be some investigation in regards to transmission failure . .
In March 2007 low coolant warning caused me open hood and add coolant three times before I took car to BMW dealer ,who diagnosed cracked plastic reservoir in radiator and separate coolant tank. Each time engine had overheated due to a lot of pressure under radiator coolant cap. Needed much time waiting before opening to add coolant. This was defective materials and not normal wear and tear breakdown. Every preventive maintenance has been done by book on this BMW. Manufacturer disclaimed responsibility as car out of warranty by few months. Car had 54,000 miles. Plastic was found hardened by heat and brittleness cracked the same. 339 other BMW 740il owners have filed petition on internet for same cracked plastic radiators (on BMW 740i ,and IL models between years 1995 through 2001. BMW ignored our pleas for free replacement. Major safety issue not expected on premium car like this.

No warning other than a slight anit-freeze smell. Upon checking out the odor, upper radiator neck between hose clamp and radiator just broke off spewing scalding hot fluid everywhere. Luckily hood was not completely open at the time. Radiator needed to be replaced, not repairable. Old part tossed.
Faulty radiators that have a design flaw that allows for the radiator neck to break off without notice and spray hot coolant everywhere. This problem is well known just visit roadfly. Org e38 message board and search for "radiator neck. " this typically occurs between 50,000-70,000 miles.
There's a major flaw design in the BMW 740i and 740il fgrom years 1995-200. I was just driving and it failed without hesitation. I spoke with a lot of other owners of this model and they had the same peoblem. To some people it happend as they were driving on the highway spilling coolant all over their windshield and losing control of their vehicle.

Upper nipple with hose connector on radiator is made of plastic and breaks off with fragments left in the hose. This really should not be made of plastic as intensely hot water passes through it all the time. This amounts to an expensive repair.
I have had three separate failures of plastic radiator components in my 1997 BMW 740il in the space of 5 months. At first inspection, these appear to me to be thermal fatigue failures indicating some manufacturing defect in the plastic. BMW denies any such issue and refused to replace the failed components under warranty. The first instance was a minor leak that developed from a small pipe that exits the top of the radiator. Before I had that repaired, the neck of the top inlet to the radiator broke off while I was driving. The radiator had to be replaced. A little over a month later, I saw steam emerging from the radiator and noted a 1/4" split in the center of the intergral fluid reservoir where water was spraying out. This component had not been replaced when the radiator was replaced. As this was not in a typical stress area like a corner, seam or bottom, I believe this was caused by fatigue. The fact that all of these failures occurred on plastic components so close together in their life implies a common failure mechanism to me. The dealer commented that "they see a lot of these kinds of failures. " as the vehicle has only 70,000 miles on it, this would seem unusual unless there were some underlying flaw in BMW's design or manufacturing of the cooling system.
Radiator blew at 70mph on the freeway. This is a known problem with this model and BMW noth America refuses to admit there is a problem. Luckily no injuries were caused, but easily could have as the entire engine bay was sprayed with hot coolant. Antifreeze also sprayed down side of vehicle.
This problem w/ radiator is very common w/ this vehicle and manufacturer refuses any responsibility.

The windshield wipers failed as stated in recall 03 v 159 000, however the vehicle identification number was not included in the recall. Also the radiator leak coolant, the air condition made a noise, the computer board images went out and then came back on, the dealer reprogrammed the navigation system. The hands free equipment was inoperative.

While traveling at highway speed of 75 mph radiator upper neck to which water hose connects broke from the weld. Dealer notified.
