1 Electrical System problem of the 2008 BMW M3

Failure Date: 06/24/2024

During a regular fuel stop at a gas station, I noticed the central lock button nor the physical door hinge fail to operate to open the door for me to exit. The fuse for the central power door lock/unlock button blew out, completely disabling the interior door hinge mechanism. I got trapped inside but thankfully the power was still on and the rear doors remained unlocked. So, I lowered the driverside window and crawl outside. Then open the unlocked reer door to enter the vehicle from the back seat. Then located the fuse box, searched on the internet to itenfy the effected fuse, replaced damaged one to another fuse (dedicated to another function), temporarily replaced with the same ampage fuse. For my vehicle, there is no visible solution to enter the physical key to open the door from the outside that are typically found under the exterior door handle. If it wasn't for a combination of luck that the other door remained unlocked, had power to lower the window, have some knowledge of vehicle electrical system (fuse), and tolerable weather condition, I would've been stuck inside my car for indifinite time, or break the window to get to exit. I would testify that this is a serious safety concern the manufacturer should investigate and provide permanent resolution.

3 Electrical System problem of the 2002 BMW M3

Failure Date: 08/24/2022

BMW m 3 parked in the driveway and had been turned off for several hours I was wax the car when I noticed a puff of smoke coming out of the air condition vent so I sat in the driver seat to investigate out of habit I close the door I planed to open the windows and the convertible top to take a look the car went into antitheft mode and locked me inside the smoke became thick quickly I tried to break the window with my elbow with no luck I was getting ready to try to kick the window if I could reach it with my foot I’m on most 70 years old so it was tough even moving I couldn’t get out . . My wife and daughter who were in the backyard and saw what was happening they broke the window so that I could climb out of the car I sprayed the air conditioning vent with water which is also dangerous but I had to put it out I then disconnected the battery as quickly as I could I have called an insurance adjuster and had mechanics look at it apparently the lcm or the light control module for some reason caught fire I was lucky I had someone there to help me someone else might not be as lucky I did breathing a bit of the smoke and I’ve had cough but I don’t feel it’s severe I will have it looked out eventually would just like the car to be evaluated by BMW engineers to see if they can figure out why it caught on fire before I pay money to have it repaired I’m not sure I can drive it again.

10 Electrical System problem of the 2011 BMW M3

Failure Date: 02/08/2017

The car was parked at a flat space parking lot. When I tried to open the vehicle using a fob key, the alarm started to go off. I was not able to access the vehicle other than using a key blade to open the door manually, however all system was dead. I have replaced the fob key battery, checked the battery status, and ran the error code system, but everything was fine. After some research, I've found out that there is a recall on the similar models (BMW 3 series) for a fuse box - battery connection issue. And giving a good press towards the fuse box located in the glove-box did fix the problem temporarily, however the issue has kept happening since then. 3 series manufactured March 2007 through July 2011 have been recalled during the NHTSA campaign id number: 13v044000. My model, M3, uses the same design and same parts as 328i and 335i for the fuse box and battery connection, and the same issue has been occurred several times not just to me but to other M3 models, but this model for some reason has not been included the previous recall campaign.

11 Electrical System problem of the 2008 BMW M3

Failure Date: 08/04/2016

My BMW have headlights insulation flaking off, this is really scary because I'm afraid to get my car getting fire.

12 Electrical System problem of the 2008 BMW M3

Failure Date: 05/18/2016

Vehicle mileage: 41,706 after receiving an oil change, I picked my car up at my local independent mechanic shop. When turning the car on I noticed a misfire with the engine. I turned the car off and asked the shop to take a look. They identified a misfire in cylinder #2. After 30 seconds of the car being turned off, smoke started pouring out of cylinder #2. After 90 seconds of aggressively smoking, the fire put itself out. Iit was found that the coil pack for cylinder #2 caught fire and fried an upstream dme control unit as well. Repairs were started the next day to replace all 8 coil packs and the dme control unit. Fortunately I was not driving and my family was not in the car. I immediately contacted BMW through their online system. After 3 days I called their help number. I then waited 2 days for contact from them. Finally I received a phone call back, by this time the car was repaired by my mechanic. BMW denied my request for reimbursement, stating the car was not at a BMW dealership when it caught fire. After escalating the concern within BMW to their investigation team, I was requested to submit photos of the burnt coil pack, and repair receipts. After 5 weeks of waiting, they contacted me and denied my claim again. When I asked for the investigation report, they stated that no investigation was conducted and that no report would be provided. I have since found another M3 owner with the same failure on the same model vehicle with the same mileage. The coil pack was original to the car, and has not been touched since it was built by BMW. This part is not listed for replacement in BMW's maintenance schedule. I no longer feel safe with my family in the car. BMW refuses to reimburse me for the damages, nor do they claim that this is a BMW part concern. If it's not a part problem, then what caused it to catch fire?.

13 Electrical System problem of the 2013 BMW M3

14 Electrical System problem of the 2003 BMW M3

Failure Date: 07/30/2015

Windows were closed. There had been a light rain. Temperature was about 90 degrees f. Doors were unlocked. Upon shutting the ignition key off in a parking lot, both doors locked automatically and immediately. Lock button on console was not pushed. Both doors would not open, by use of the buttons on the keys or by the console button. Two different keys were tried. The door handles moved, but would not open the doors. I don't believe the outside door handles would have opened the doors either because the doors were "locked" . The inside temperature of the car began to rise rapidly so the engine was started to provide air conditioning. Restarting the engine several times did not change the condition of the locked doors. After 10 to 12 minutes I decided to lower the driver's side window and use the key in the door lock on the exterior of the car. This finally unlocked both doors. This could have been deadly if there was an engine fire and I had pull over the car and shut the key off. The doors may lock. A disabled or weak person may not have the strength to break the glass or climb out the window if they panic. I am very scared to use the car at this point. . . Even to drive it to get repaired.

16 Electrical System problem of the 2009 BMW M3

Failure Date: 03/23/2015

While trying to exit my e92 2009 M3 from inside the vehicle by double pulling the handle it would not unlock the car. The locking bolt sticks up partially when you pull the handle but doesn't unlock. I had to hit the lock button from the dashboard to unlock the car. This is a safety concern if you are panicked and can't get out of the vehicle under heavy stress.

17 Electrical System problem of the 2011 BMW M3

Failure Date: 10/30/2014

Had to maintain foot on brakes. Have to push "engine start" button. Car starts up again. Engine stalling and shutting off is a safety hazard, especially if the car is in motion. Could cause death to end users or other people. Can cause property damages as well. This has happen twice within a 8 week period. Most recently on Nov 26,2014 approximately 430pm BMW "auto start stop function" ruled out because the led light above the button is lit, function is disable.

18 Electrical System problem of the 2002 BMW M3

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

I am filing this complaint on behalf of myself and the countless others experiencing this potentially fatal defect in BMW's smg pump unit. I was driving on the freeway for about 5 minutes when I noticed my car immediately shifted into neutral without me making that decision. I was in the middle of changing lanes when this happened. The smg warning light came on. I put my hazards on. The car abruptly slowed as it chose to shift back to 4th gear as I was going 65mph. I tried shifting back up to gear safely get to the shoulder but with no luck as the vehicle went back into neutral. The cars behind me came very rapidly and two almost hit me as a result of this pump failure. By this time I was travelling around 40mph in a 65+ traffic zone. I finally rolled my car down the shoulder to safety. I replaced the smg relay with a spare new one I always carried in the car. I waited 10 minutes for the vehicle to cool off as I knew this was the infamous smg pump issue. The car started back up with no light and drove me almost the entire route back home. Just about a mile from my home, same thing happened. This time leaving me completely stuck in a busy intersection. Luckily, the people behind me were kind enough to help push my car out of the way. I called a friend and we pushed the car all the way back to my garage. Now this is just the first time it has happened. It happens in less than 3 minutes of driving the car just when I try to move it never breaking 15mph. Bmwna ignores our complaints as their dealerships make money hand over fist with this $4000 repair. My complaint is not with the repair amount. Us M3 owners are aware of the maintenance and repair costs for our highly specialized vehicles. However, this pump malfuction is a very real danger to all drivers. We've seen this happen to vehicles with anywhere from 15k to 120k miles on them. BMW needs to issue a recall.

19 Electrical System problem of the 2009 BMW M3

Failure Date: 09/29/2011

Shortly after purchasing my BMW 2009 M3, I noticed a rare but very disturbing pattern on take off. I had car checked in dealer and I was told it was likely secondary to my driving style! this uncontrolled take off is like hi rev and rapid acceleration periodically alternating with deceleration for few seconds. I had this happen prob a dozen time so far(36k on car). On day of my accident, in stop and go traffic with speed less than 5 miles per hour, car literally went off on me. It accelerated to hit the car in front and then managed to push the car into another 3 cars in front, before it came to a stall. I am not sure if it was exactly like my previous episodes because the distance between my car and next car was short. What I am sure is that I had no control on car.
