1 Interior Rearview Mirror problem of the 2005 BMW M3

Failure Date: 06/18/2011

The auto-dimming rear view mirrors in 2001-2006 BMW 3 series, and other models are defective. These mirrors leak out the toxic auto-dimming fluid into the car (damaging the interior, and putting the driver/passengers at risk from the chemicals). Not to mention once this happens the mirror is becomes blurry, and hard to see out of (which is a saftey hazard for vehicle operation). My particular car is still under cpo BMW warranty, and I was told the mirror is not covered under warranty, even though its an obvious defect in materials, or design from the manufacturer. Researching the problem on internet forums I've discovered thousands of other owners that have experienced the same problem. This is not a rare occurence, and BMW refuses to acknowledge the scope of problem. We have all been forced to spend $600 for a replacement mirror, that will overtime have the same issue.

3 Interior Rearview Mirror problem of the 2004 BMW M3

Failure Date: 07/20/2010

Hadn't driven the car in 2 weeks, was out of town. Drove it to work on Monday and Monday evening or Tuesday morning noticed what looked like a bubble at the top of my rear view mirror. By Tuesday noon, the bubble was in the center of the mirror and when I came out to the car at about 5:30 that afternoon, there was a liquid substance on my center console that leaked out from the mirror. It was in the mid-90s Monday & Tuesday. The liquid was caustic as it ate the paint and melted into the plastic console. I wiped it off with a napkin as best I could, but it was embedded in the plastic. On the drive home felt light headed and experienced stomach pain / diarrhea and a sore throat from wed night onwards. Still experiencing some of these symptoms today (sat), though I stopped driving the car Thursday evening after doing research on this and seeing others Acura & BMW owners had experienced same failure and similar symptoms. The local dealer indicated that they had seen this before (that was Thursday night). Mirror is still in car as I'm still waiting to hear back from the dealer if they are going to replace the mirror and damaged console.

6 Interior Rearview Mirror problem of the 2003 BMW M3

Failure Date: 05/21/2009

Took my BMW M3 to don jacobs BMW in lexington, ky. There had been a recall for a software update. After they finished, I took my car home, noticed an unusual "liquid" bubble in my rearview mirror. Contacted the dealership and BMW north America may 26. They state no relation. Searching the internet on BMW M3 forums, there are at least 2 other people who have had the same issues happen immediately after this software recall. Hundreds others after the car was outside on a hot day. Appears to be a defect, some say this liquid is Mercury, and have had it leak onto their interior causing severe damage to leather. I was forced to drive w/o a rearview mirror till they decided on may 29th that they would not replace the part. At this point I am having to purchase a replacement part on my own and install myself. This will likely mean another week w/o a rearview mirror. The following is a link of the many others (30 pages worth) people who have had this happen, and as stated a few specifically describe this happening after software update as happened to me. Its thought that during the update, the car is put on a charger causing this area to heat up internally, causing the leak just as if it had been left out on a hot day. Please feel free to contact me for more details, or links to the others this has happened to. . Read more...
