Regarding sib 65 12 22, NHTSA id number 10227571, manufacturer communication number b651222. Summary: the seal of the roof-mounted antenna housing is separating from the vehicle. Affected products: (20) vehicle BMW X3 2018-2022 - BMW x4 2019-2022 - BMW x5 2019-2022 - BMW x6 2020-2022 - BMW x7 2019-2022 I would like to mention that, this issue was known by BMW and acknowledge as painting process deffect, BMW havent release a recall. BMW released on oct 2022 a BMW service information bulletin detailing a defect in the paint and sealant of the roof-mounted antenna housing, which can allow water to leak into the vehicle and damage electrical components, including the emergency call system and gps. Vehicles produced before January 10, 2022, are affected. The bulletin provides instructions for dealers to inspect for water ingress, remove the affected antenna housing, inspect the paint for separation on the sealing surface, and replace the housing if the paint is separating. Even when this production deffect main consequence is the damage of the telematics control unit (tcu) due to physical closeness and consequently failure of the vehicle’s emergency call system and other communication systems and gps. The bulletin only focus on replace of antenna and painting of area (approx cost $700) and doesnt mention any alternatives for solution to damaged tcu (approx cost $3000) and on top the solution mentioned is even more restricted to coverage under the terms of the BMW new vehicle limited warranty for passenger cars and light trucks. Please, respectfully request you to consider reviewing this situation due to affects 20 models and a considerable big amount of people.

The seal of the roof-mounted antenna housing adhesive was faulty. This caused separating from the vehicle allowing water into the vehicle, which damaged emergency call components and equipment. BMW told me this was a know issue, but that NHTSA had not yet applied this to my vehicle. Please issue an advisory on this known issue. My car is under 40,000 miles and fairly new still. Adhesive should not be deteriorating this early. Preventative maintenance could not have addressed this factory issue. - excerpt from BMW inspection: concern critical client states emergency call malfunction on. Aux battery replaced twice. Ref ro 871625 and ro 907864. Please check and advise cause found shark fin cover glue to be loose and to have a slow water leak. Water damaged tcb module. No communication with tcb module. Correction replace tcb module. Replace roof antenna. Replace shark fin. Program and encode tcb module cost: $2,8550. 50.

My 2019 BMW X3 posted this error on the instrument display "emergency call system malfunction". BMW service informed me that the shark fin roof mounted antenna is leaking. It causes issues with the sos feature, navigation (reporting wrong location). There are numerous complaints on BMW owners message boards with the same problem. There is at least one BMW service information bulletin (sib) that applies to this issue for my vehicle. It is number b65 12 22. I was told this issue is not covered under my certified pre-owned warranty. This is a safety issue affecting thousands of BMW owners. BMW should do the right thing, issue a recall on the affected models and repair this problem. Thank you.
As I was driving today in the freeway my sunroof exploded. As far as I can tell, it was not caused by rocks or other cars, it just exploded putting my wife and I in a dangerous situation having to park on the side of the freeway. We first thought someone shot at us. We stopped the car and it took us a minute to feel safe to go out, trembling, to check car for gun fire. We looked the entire body while the freeway was full, even for a Sunday, and discovered nothing wrong. As we entered the car and closed our door, we heard the noise of shared glass, so we both left the car again to reinspect it putting our lives in danger as other drivers were passing by. We re-enter the car again and the same thing happened, left the car again to inspect the tires at this time, each time exposing our lives to the freeway traffic. Upon entering the car for the third time, heard freeway noise and thought window was probably opened. It was then that we realized our sunroof was probably broken, upon checking, we were shocked when saw hundreds of pieces of glass on top of our car. It was then that we realized we would have to clean the top of our car with the wind blowing glass everywhere, risking an eye injury, and we were worried another car would be hit with the glass or even worse than that, it would be someone riding a motorcycle which is common on Sunday afternoons and get blind from glass flying from our car to their face. So we spent a while cleaning most of the glass to be able to drive off the freeway, again exposing our lives. During our cleaning of the glass, we put it inside of our car on the floor by the back seats so we would not leave that on the freeway exposing other people to get hurt. During this cleaning time, my wife cut her hand with glass that entered her skin. Not understanding why the accident happened, I’ve decided to research online, only to find that BMW’s X3 having problems with sunroof exploding since 2018, but no recalls! very upsetting! my car is 2023.

The accident happened at noon on [xxx] at the amazon fresh/post office parking lot’s far right exit lane facing [xxx] the address is [xxx] . We were leaving the parking lot and I stopped at the exit lane with 2 cars in front of us. After the first car exited, the second car, a black Ford explorer, moved forward. I released the brake slightly but my foot was still on the brake pedal. At this moment, my car suddenly accelerated and quickly approached the explorer. I immediately pressed the brake pedal hard but was unable to stop my car and hit the back of the explorer. The explorer was forced out in front of the stop sign but the driver was able to turn right to park at the roadside. With my foot still firmly on the brake pedal, my car kept on accelerating into [xxx] , crossing 5 lanes of traffic until we hit the roadside curb of westbound [xxx] . The car then swerved left and hit a roadside tree, turning sideways into [xxx] middle turn lane. During this entire time, I did not press the accelerator and the car was violently shaking and jerking right and left. As the car slowed down, I was able to steer the car to the right eastbound lane of [xxx] , next to the parking lot near bank of America’s atm sign. After I got out of the car, I noticed the front and right sides of the body and tires were damaged including crushing, dents, and significant scratching. The problem I believe is as follows: 1. Sudden unintended acceleration and control circuit malfunction. 2. Airbags did not deploy even though we hit a car, curb and tree. 3. Onboard data recorder should have the information needed. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

My car has a recall, and dealer told me it can not be solved. For this reason, I can not rent my car in turo due to incomplete recall, and I also have safety concerns.

This recall was determined in July 2024. It's now November 7, 2024 and there is still not a fix for it.
I was driving on an interstate in utah near park city in a rented car (BMW X3) and the sunroof exploded suddenly and without warning. It created an extremely loud boom that reverberated. My passenger and I didn't know what happened and it was scary and caused panic. We pulled over and discovered what had happened. It was one of the most frightening situations I've ever experienced.

Whenever the vehicle is driven, despite the temperature, the panoramic moon roof cracks and creaks and sounds like it is going to break. The dealer said numerous people have also complained about this happening and BMW will not do anything about it. This is my 3rd X3 of this body style and my other two did not have this issue because BMW didn't "cheapen" out on the window sealant and materials of the lining and mounts in the sunroof until the lci redesign or 2023. I am afraid that one of these days it will crack and break downward, causing a major safety hazard while driving and I want BMW to fix and/or remedy the problem(s) ASAP.
Several warning lights flashed on and off while driving. My display/computer turned off and rebooted while driving. A day or two later the electric rear hatch stopped working. I opened the cover in the back where the spare is, and found several inches of water (4-5) in the well. I called the dealer first thing since it was a frightening thought thinking the car may blow up or trigger the airbag making me (or whoever is driving the car) crash into someone else. To my surprise there was no warning or recall on the problem. A surprise since a simple google search turned up pages of complaints, chat rooms and discussions concerning the same issue. This is where the battery is stored in this car. The battery was sitting in inches of water even though it is slightly elevated. The control module for the electric hatch (according to a schematic found by google) although in a separate raised styrofoam holder, was halfway submerged in water. Under the side panel was wet. In that side panel is the fuse/ relay panel. Water was dripping down the side of that wall and the insulation was wet and dripping at the bottom and into the bay. The safety of myself, the driver, or my wife the primary driver of the car could be affected in many unexpected/ unknown ways with a short on the fuse panel or worse yet water sloshing around a big 12 volt car battery. Could it explode? I don’t know. I vacuumed out the water and it has come back and fills a substantial amount in a couple weeks. About one inch per week. It is certainly ongoing. My wife won’t drive it so deduction tells me it is not coming in from driving it. It is available for inspection although I have not driven it to the dealer since it has been quite wet and is some distance away. I tried to follow your format and include all your requested details. If I have left anything out I am happy to answer any questions. Thank you for the opportunity to bring this to someone’s attention. Thanks again, jim haws.

I was driving down the street from my home and I slowed down turned right and my car was out of control I steered to the curb. I got out and saw that the tire had blown-up and a large piece of the tire which was cut in half was on the ground. I couldn’t drive the car I called a tow truck driver who was there within 30 min he towed my car to BMW. It hasn’t been fully inspected I am waiting for usaa to inspect with spectrum collision. Several people from the collision company have said it may be a tire failure.

I am writing to report a potential safety problem with my 2018 BMW X3, VIN: (provide VIN here if available), that was purchased in may 2018 and has covered 36,000 miles since then. The vehicle has always been garaged and well-maintained. A few weeks ago, I experienced a critical malfunction with the vehicle's moonroof. I opened it normally, but it failed to close afterwards. I should note that this was merely the 4th or 5th time I have ever operated the moonroof since the car was purchased. As of now, the moonroof remains in the open position unable to close it even manually. With summer on the horizon, the interior of the car is exposed to direct sunlight and increasing temperatures. This situation raises significant concerns for my family, particularly the potential health risks to my 7-year-old daughter due to prolonged exposure to excessive heat and sunlight. Upon experiencing this issue, I contacted the service department for troubleshooting. The technicians diagnosed the issue as a problem with the interior sunshade motor, an electrical issue that necessitates a labor-intensive process to fix, including the removal of the vehicle's headliner. Subsequently, I reached out to BMW north America, seeking support and resolution for this significant malfunction. To my disappointment, they declined to acknowledge the problem or offer any assistance towards remediation. This response was unexpected and unsatisfactory, considering the potential health risks and safety concerns the malfunctioning moonroof poses to occupants of the vehicle. I respectfully request your department to investigate this matter and take appropriate action to protect the safety and wellbeing of consumers who may be dealing with similar issues. This may well represent a widespread manufacturing defect that could affect numerous vehicles of the same make and model, thereby posing substantial risks to a large number of people. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
While driving at approximately 45 mph on florida highway 10 with no other cars around the sunroof suddenly shattered. There was a loud “pop” and the sound of glass hitting the top of the car. The sunroof and shade were closed at the time and most of the glass ended up in the street. There is considerable paint damage to the roof of the vehicle from the glass hitting it after shattering.

Multiple times while driving, my key fob in my pocket has opened the trunk. Extremely dangerous, and apparently very easy to accidentally press. Same thing with the alarm, almost caused me to have an accident.
SUV's lift gate has opened on its own twice. Once in the garage resulting garage door damage as well as $798. 00 in lift gate damage. The second time the vehicle was outside unattended.
On September 7, 2021, the tailgate of my 2019 BMW X3 opened on its own in my garage. The car had been turned off for approximately 20-25 minutes. My key was inside the house, nowhere near the garage. No one had touched the car after it was turned off. My husband was in the garage, standing approximately 6-10 feet away from the car when the tailgate opened on its own. I believe this is both a safety and security issue. The tailgate opened on its own. This could have occurred while driving on a highway (safety), or while parked on a public street (security). Street. On 9/9/21 I reported the problem to zach santillo in the service dept of our dealer: BMW-newton, NJ.
Trunk opened while vehicle was in motion. It’s possible that the trunk button of the remote was accidentally depressed when it was in a pocket but I strongly believe that the vehicle should ignore such commands when the vehicle is in motion or even in gear.
Tailgate suddenly opens without warning. Happened twice this month while car was parked and engine was turned off, as well as while car was stopped, in park, and engine was running. Note that this happened repeatedly during the first year of ownership, and BMW monterey (California) tried at least 4 times to fix it. Claimed it was finally fixed, and it did not recur for some months, but once again it is happening.

My 2019 BMW X3 with comfort access option package will open the hatch without any input from me. This has happened 4 times now and all when locked with the key in my pocket and I was well over 100 feet away. This can injure people/kids in parking lots or cause damage to my garage or hatch. Some people have reported online that this has happened whilst driving!.
The sunroof water drains back up and causes water to pool in the cargo area where electronic components are stored (wheel well like area) which causes an alarm to go off and hatchback malfunctions. My previous X3 had hatchback issues too. BMW states the frame that sun roof sits in is cracked but not caused by user behavior.
The panoramic sunroof exploded with the vehicle stop and we inside. The glass broken pieces fell on the cover that was luckily closed. The sun roof had a hole in the middle. The auto dealer provide an estimate of $7,900 for the repair and told us to claim the insurance. We understand this represent a defect in the sun roof and should be covered by the warranty.
My 2015 BMW X3 has less than 30,000 miles on it and the driver door closure pull is deteriorating to a sticky untouchable mess. Also the front glove compartment door leather is pulling away from the box leaving an open gap. I did research online and found that this is a recurring issue with BMW owners. This is a manufacturer defect and should be recalled by BMW to replace the defective interior. The vehicle has been garage kept to avoid heat or sun damage. When I contacted my BMW dealer I was told that this would result in 800-1000 repair cost. The leather interior is not the quality I expected from a 48,000 vehicle.

The back up camera fails to show the images and pdc sensors do not beep. Even when in reverse the cameras malfunction and freeze. Was parking in a tight spot and none of the pdc sensors and cameras worked. Even with option to automatically come on the pdc and camera system did not turn on even at very slow speed in the parking garage. After parking and lifting the foot off the brake the car hit the wall and then pdc sensors beeped after the impact and created damage to the front end of the car.

Power lift gate opened spontaneously while vehicle was moving forward. Contents of cargo area fell out.
While driving my sunroof flew off the vehicle and shattered into pieces. The vehicle was traveling about 35 miles per hour on a city street.
I was driving and had just entered into hwy. I was traveling approx 45-50mph. There were no other vehicles around, when I suddenly began hearing a popping or clicking sound, followed by what sounded like an explosion. I could hear glass shattering above my head, but was protected from injury because the sunroof shade was closed. I slowed down and pulled off the hwy at the next exit ramp, got out of the vehicle to inspect and saw a huge gaping hole in the sunroof.
