2 Brakes Failed problem of the 2015 BMW X3

Failure Date: 10/16/2019

I was about to park in a parking lot, driving slowly and carefully between two parked cars. As I very gently put my foot on the brake to stop, the car jolted intensely and did not stop. I then pressed on the brake pedal harder but the vehicle accelerated to a very fast speed. I drove through some large plants and went over a side walk and made a sharp turn to avoid a large building in front of me. I then drove through the parking lot, maneuvering around parked cars, buildings and other objects while the car was speeding up. My efforts to slow the car down failed even after applying auxiliary brake. Luckily there were no pedestrians or moving cars while this was happening! finally I ended up driving up a hill, hoping that the elevation would stop the car. Instead due to high speed, the vehicle was lifted up about 7 feet in the air, hit a large tree and fell in the ground with much force. I have some injuries as a result and currently receiving medical support, hoping that I will not have permanent health issues, which I very much doubt! my car was severely damaged and was totaled. It is clear and evident that there was some kind of technical malfunction that caused the brake failure and acceleration. I contacted BMW dealership where we had purchased the car and also where I had the car serviced one month earlier! they said I must pay for the car to be delivered to their facility in order for them to examine the cause of brake failure. I refused to pay the high price. It is also important to mention that I have been driving for over forty years and I consider myself a very capable driver. I should also add that on the internet there are at least a dozen similar reported cases of this model. Obviously, BMW has neglected to look into this matter. They should investigate their X3 models before someone dies!.

3 Brakes Failed problem of the 2017 BMW X3

Failure Date: 06/30/2019

Driving on the freeway for approximately 40-50 minutes. Take exit, cruise to off ramp light, the car is in motion and the brakes are applied. The car in motion initially responds and 3/4 of the way to the light (almost at intersection brakes fail, no brakes and the car makes a clicking noise similar to when a battery is almost dead, but the car is on, electrical and everything seems ok except for the brakes. The ramp is at an incline (uphill a little) so the car stops. The car is partially in the intersection. Thankfully no car in front or cars crossing the intersection. The car is turned off and back on and we continue another mile to our final destination without further problems.

5 Brakes Failed problem of the 2016 BMW X3

Failure Date: 12/29/2017

While braking to slow the vehicle to a stop behind traffic at a red light, after coming off a highway exit ramp, the brakes failed to respond to added pressure applied to bring the vehicle to a complete stop. The BMW X3 kept moving forward, and collided, at very slow speed, with the stopped vehicle ahead. I quickly checked to ensure that my foot was properly on the brake pedal and depressed the pedal again, which again failed to bring the vehicle to a complete stop, resulting in secondary contact with the vehicle ahead. When attempting to move the vehicle to the side of the road, the electronic transmission repeatedly jumped into park from drive, requiring me to turn off the ignition and restart the vehicle before I could safely move it to the side of the road.

6 Brakes Failed problem of the 2016 BMW X3

Failure Date: 12/17/2016

This is the second time in this vehicle that our brakes have failed. We filed a complaint the first time, gave the car to BMW service, had an engineer from BMW come and look at the car - the engineer filed a report saying that the brakes were fine and nothing was wrong with the vehicle. We begged and pleaded to be given another car but BMW na refused to budge. Forced to take the car back, we drove this morning and as we were slowing to a red light nearing a busy intersection, our brakes failed once more. I pushed down on the brake pedal and the car accelerated into the intersection. I had to honk the horn to warn other drivers and use the emergency brake to stop the car. This is a 2016 BMW X3 xdrive28i and it is unsafe to drive. Two brake malfunctions 1 month apart, BMW refuses to admit any fault.

7 Brakes Failed problem of the 2016 BMW X3

Failure Date: 11/18/2016

I was slowing to a stop at a red light on a very busy street and the brakes in my X3 failed. Instead of slowing the car down - it sped up and crashed into the car in front of me. I pushed down on the brakes and the car jumped forward. There is minimal damage to the front bumper but I am scared to get behind the wheel again.

10 Brakes Failed problem of the 2013 BMW X3

Failure Date: 04/13/2014

In stop and go traffic on the interstate I was braking after moving forward a few feet and the engine started racing causing the car to lurch forward (given I was on the brake) until the brake would not hold any longer at which point the car accelerated in traffic despite me pushing even harder on the brake. The brake was completely unresponsive at this point. I avoided rear ending the car in front of me by swerving around him but could not avoid the vehicle farther ahead in traffic and hit the right rear of a uhaul storage unit towed by a vehicle and the BMW flipped onto its right side. Miraculously, we walked away with only minor cuts, scrapes, and bruises. Seat restraints and airbags worked perfectly which is the only kind thing we can now say despite having no prior issues. Whether it is an onboard computer malfunction or not we will never own another BMW. . . And if the other online posts have been there when I purchased the vehicle in sept 2012 (and had I read them) then I never would have purchased the vehicle. Coupled with other carcomplaint. Com, BMW community blogs, and NHTSA posts surrounding 2012 and 2013 X3 events of the identical nature there should be an immediate investigation as to the simultaneous and concurrent event of the throttle acceleration while braking, and the brakes failing (as if the computer thinks the brake pedal is the gas pedal?) . . And a recall before deaths occur . . . Though it is likely they've already occurred since the dead can't testify as to a problem that other BMW dealer service departments fail to replicate and therefore discount. The back hatch of our vehicle also flipped open allowing items to fall onto the highway (despite no impact to the rear of the vehicle) though all passenger car doors remained closed. The vehicle has been totaled. We would certainly not get into that car ever again even if it were repairable.

11 Brakes Failed problem of the 2014 BMW X3

Failure Date: 03/04/2014

The contact owns a 2014 BMW X3. The contact stated that while driving 20 mph, the brakes failed to respond. As a result, the driver crashed into the rear of another vehicle. A police report was not filed and no injuries were reported. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the failure was unable to be replicated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 13v454000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure and current mileage was 60. . . Updated 04-23-bf.

12 Brakes Failed problem of the 2012 BMW X3

Failure Date: 03/04/2012

While I was driving my 2012 X3, I approached a stop light. As I applied the brakes, the vehicle slowed down but would not stop. The engine started to accelerate in addition to the brakes failing causing me to hit the rear end of the car in front of me. I continued to apply the brakes but they would not respond. My 2012 X3 kept rolling and finally stopped only after I hit the car in front of me approximately three times. I immediately had the car towed to the BMW dealer where it sat for approximately two months. BMW stated that there were no problems with car.
