BMW X3 owners have reported 8 problems related to carrier/rack (under the equipment category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
It had been raining in my area the week of 4/16/2021. On the evening of 4/16/2021 my rear hatch control and rear hatch alarm started malfunctioning. I discovered water had gotten into the electrical compartment in the rear hatch. I brought my SUV to the shop/dealer for repair and was told the sunroof frame was cracked allowing water penetration from the headliner to the rear hatch causing the hatch control unit to malfunction. My vehicle has never been involved in an accident and I have never stored or transported anything on my roof. The repair shop/dealer was unable to offer a reason for what could have caused the sunroof frame to crack. The only explanation that makes sense is that the sunroof was either installed improperly by the manufacturer or the sunroof frame is defective. It was $4,298. 08 to repair the sunroof and control unit. This is most concerning as my SUV is less than 5 years old, only has 81,448 miles and there is no recommended maintenance for the sunroof.

The sunroof water drains back up and causes water to pool in the cargo area where electronic components are stored (wheel well like area) which causes an alarm to go off and hatchback malfunctions. My previous X3 had hatchback issues too. BMW states the frame that sun roof sits in is cracked but not caused by user behavior.

The windshield of this vehicle seems to represent a safety risk. Last week, we replaced the windshield due to a small crack from small rock on the highway. The vehicle was picked up from the dealer on Monday afternoon. On Wednesday at about 11:00 am, the windshield cracked again. I had to take to the dealer again. I am wondering about the safety of this windshield, was there quality test performed ?.
Dealership refused to perform recall on car for seat belt bracket saying they did not have the time. Appointment was made nearly 3 months prior.
The vehicle is equipped with blue tooth, thus it is supposed to be hand-free to handle smartphone call or text while driving. This blue tooth worked properly for previous years models, and even 2018 same model but with the option being slightly different than mine, such as, the one equipped with wireless phone charger. For my vehicle, it does not notify while blue tooth connected when new text comes. I complained to BMW north America. They admitted that it was a firmware bug, but did not commit to update firmware to fix the the bug. This bug could side track the driver if he tries to check the message while driving since he knows the text message notification in the vehicle is not working.

Nhsta database is saying our vehicle has an active isofix bracket recall (16v333) but every time we try to schedule with BMW, the dealer informs us that our vehicle is not affected. I am a service member living overseas and will not be allowed to ship my car until the active recall is resolved but the manufacturer is telling us that there is nothing to fix. How do we resolve so that we may ship our car?.

4 motor mount bolts were sheered. Took to dealership due to coolant leak and found that engine had become unmounted and was sitting on water pump that was cracked and causing the leak. I had noticed vibration but was not sure what it was. Over $2000 repair bill. This seems to be a common problem with this model BMW.

Low coolant light came on, and BMW dealer found a crack on the water pump. Upon further inspection, the engine was noted to be canted, making it impossible to attach the new water pump. It was discovered that the engine mount bolts (total of 4 on one side) had all broken off, causing the engine to tilt. The repair was $2000 and when I called BMW USA, they said that there would be no compensation back to me, and that the broken bolts were secondary to the car having 90,000 miles. Changing bolts is not a normal wear and replacement item, and the car has never been in an accident. Our vehicles are gently driven, and never go off road, so I am mystified how this happened.
