While driving, an error message appeared on the car screen that said: passenger restraint system malfunction: contact BMW carefully drive to the closest service center. Passenger restraint system is limited. Increased risk of injury in case of a collision. Continue wearing safety belt. 1) what component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? passenger restraint system 2) how was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? increased risk of injury in case of collision 3) has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? the dealer ran a diagnostic and no fault was found. They tried to claim that there was water on the seat because an umbrella was on the seat. It was not raining before or during the time the message appeared. The umbrella has not been used for quite some time and was not wet. 4) has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? just the dealer. 5) were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? none. 13 Seat Belt problem of the 2016 BMW X3

Failure Date: 10/13/2019

My 8-year old daughter was sitting on rear passenger size seat on a booster seat with seat belt on. She first played with my son who was sitting on a read driver seat on a car seat. Then she fell asleep. In this process the seat belt some how got wrapped around her. When we stopped for a bathroom break we unbuckled the belt to find out that the belt was wrapped around here and we could not unwrap it. The more we tried to pull out the more tighter it got. She was in severe pain. We had to borrow a scissor from the gas station to cut the belt. See the pic with the scar. She was in pain for next few days. We took the car to dealer and they said that belt worked as designed. The child lock kicked in and the lock wont release until the belt goes all the way in. Belt could not go all the way in because it was wrapped around her. There should have been some manual button/switch to release the belt.

17 Seat Belt problem of the 2018 BMW X3

Failure Date: 03/01/2018

2018 BMW X3 m40i: upon start up the vehicle displays a warning seatbelt restraint system malfunction. the car the enters a limp mode and says to drive to the nearest BMW service center and that some safety features are unavailable. Power assist steering no longer works, and the vehicle defaults to 4wd mode. Additionally, it further states airbag functionality is limited, and crash avoidance is unavailable, but that driving is still possible! what's disturbing is that I discovered that many other late model BMW owners are reporting this same issue. The few that have had it resolved said it's a sensor failure in one of the front seats. This sensor is tied to the restraint system and the airbag. BMW service center has attempted to fix this malfunction on my X3 on three separate occasions without success. I am worried that my airbags or seatbelt will fail in a collision.

18 Seat Belt problem of the 2006 BMW X3

Failure Date: 11/25/2017

My drivers seat belt randomly unlatches while I am driving. This has happened more than 10 times , both on side streets and the freeway. A week ago I was coming home and about a block from my house the seat belt light lit up on my dash and started dinging. My seat belt was latched. It continued to ding until I got home and turned off the vehicle.

19 Seat Belt problem of the 2012 BMW X3

Failure Date: 11/09/2017

Takata recall: I recently bought my used car from a Nissan dealership. Within the first month of operation, I noticed that a "passenger restraint system malfunction" would appear in the center console. It has not gone away since then. It will only display this message in the beginning when I turn my car on, while it's stationary. After that it just display's the airbag symbol in the bottom left corner of the odometer. This has me a little concerned since I do not want to be driving with anyone else if that means the passenger airbag will not deploy in case of an event. When I did my research online, I found out that several of other BMW owner where complaining about the same issue.

23 Seat Belt problem of the 2015 BMW X3

Failure Date: 04/03/2015

On April 3 2015, we were about start our 7 day spring break trip to northern California from our home in san diego when my 8 year old child said she can't put the seat belt buckle on (rear right side). I was surprised and asked her to try again because I thought may be she is not able to reach all the way down to the buckle receptor but the seat belt wont go in the receptor. With help of a flash light we tried to look into the receptor to see that if any debris got stuck in side but there was no debris instead the looked like the metal latch was already in lock potion without the seat belt. This was a very scary moment for us and about to ruin our vacation. We took a chance and with help of a screw driver we try to push the metal latch down to see if we can put the seatbelt on. Luckily the metal piece got pushed down and we were about to put the seat belt on. After that we very scared and worried if seat belt may not latch is again. We started observing the seat belt latching in all other 4 seats belts closely. At later time I have observed that driver seat belt latching feels "very flimsy" we reported this to BMW customer service and at first BMW showed a vey cold and routine response to our concerns. It is only we told them we will report this safety incident to appropriate federal agency, they tried to help little bit. When took that car to a BMW dealer ship asked to check all the seat belt latching issue, they only replaced rear right side seat belt receptor and have said there was no problem found in other seat belts. I am still not convinced and still feel the latching in the 2015 BMW X3 is to be "flimsy". I want to report this as serious passenger safety issue and poor quality of so called high end cars for which customers pay huge premium because these cars deemed more safer than other cars. Please feel free to contact me in case.

26 Seat Belt problem of the 2005 BMW X3

Failure Date: 12/01/2012

Front passenger side air bag is turned off (light notification), when no one is in passenger seat and no items are on seat the warning light goes on and buzzer will not stop, as if some weight is on seat. BMW has issued recall for this problem (76536 & 72651), but not for this VIN. This is a severe safety issue since airbag is turned off by car and can not be turned on by driver or passenger. Also, have to have seat belt activated all the time. Have noticed that several people have made this same complaint online and BMW has not corrected issue.

27 Seat Belt problem of the 2005 BMW X3

Failure Date: 09/13/2012

I originally asked seattle BMW to look into this problem of the seat belt warning system buzzer sounding when there was no passenger in the seat. At this point the car was still under warranty (2007) and they said the problem was corrected. Upon driving home to olympia, wa the buzzer began sounding again and the warning light remained illuminated. Recently, I was having a failure of the rear driver's side window repaired at the northwest BMW dealership in tacoma. I was told the cost would be approx. $1600. Another customer there was talking to me about my situation and told me his friend has the same year (2005) X3 and has the same problem. Despite the BMW recall 08v384000, the dealer as well as BMW of north America say the vehicle is not covered under this recall. This appears to be the "corporate" response to all owners. Front seat passengers are in danger should these vehicles be involved in an accident. Dot needs to get on this issue to protect consumers! ## VIN passed ## BMW X3 2005 ##.
