While coming to a stop the car jerks violently forward with no warning, while moving slow it does the same, to the point where it now hurts to drive it. I get an error that says transmission malfuction, and without warning the car shifts to a lower gear, I have to stop, then turn the car off, when it is turned back the error goes away, then it reappears once again a day or two later. While driving, the steering wheel does not correct in time, and it slides on turns for a second, then over corrects, I have brought it in to BMW dealership, they have replicated the issue, but do not want to cover it under warranty, this has happened at highway speeds as well which is very scary, I am not sure where to turn at this point, so I hope that the NHTSA does an investigation, as I've seen other users have the same issues, and it just one death away from a recall, thank you.
While driving at highway speeds the steering becomes stiff and sticky causing decreased responsiveness on control of the vehicle. As a result it takes extra effort on traveling in a straight line. Once the sticking is released could cause the driver to overcompensate the steering in one direction or another. I feel this is a major safety concern that needs immediate attention.

The 2014 X3 has a directional control issue. When accelerating from low speeds, within 2-3 seconds without a firm hold on the steering wheel, the car departs the lane of travel, diverting to the right hand side. In steady state driving regardless of speed in a range of 30mph-75mph, within 5 seconds without firm hold on the steering wheel, the car diverges to the right from its lane of travel. With any slight distraction of the driver, the X3 drifts to the right hand side, always the right side, and has been uncorrected with alignment, new tires, new steering arm. My local BMW dealer has refused to fix this problem even with a car under warranty. Many other BMW X3 owners have reported the same problem on BMW forums online. This lane departure is a safety issue that always happens while the car is in motion.

Steering is "sticky" and off center for my 2011 BMW X3 35i--especially at high speeds during highway driving when the steering wheel is turned from its current static position, higher than normal resistance to turning is felt. Once the initial resistance is overcome, the resistance lessens, resulting in a tendency to turn the wheel further than was intended. This makes it difficult to smoothly steer the car on its intended path and results in the car wandering from side to side which makes it dangerous to drive and very stressful ,I had brand new tires installed and had numerous alignments done which did not improve the driving at all ,this leads me to believe the steering system is faulty and should be recalled.
Many dashboard warning lights came on simultaneously while driving. Took to BMW of rockville MD. They diagnosed failure of "faulty steering angle sensor and coil spring. " they confirmed this was a safety issue, and that it was nothing we did that caused it-- it was a faulty part. After only 33,000 miles, to have a critical part fail, seems serious to me. They charged us $2080. 76 to fix, because it was outside warranty due to age of car. To my mind if a part fault or failure occurs, that is a safety issue, a recall issue, not a warranty issue and the carmaker should fix and report it.

When the temperature is above 90-degrees and while driving on a straight highway, the steering gets stiff and the car is difficult to steer. After many miles of this type of difficult driving across several days, the stiffness disappears. First occurred a year ago; went away, returned last month.
Complete failure of power steering, without warning or apparent reason in a brand new car tremendous effort required to steer car error message on dashboard stated "drive moderately increased steering effort required consult service center" vehicle sent to service center- no updates yet.

Driving on a side street at ~20mph and about to make a left turn and the steering completely locked (as when you turn the engine off and park the vehicle, with no ability to turn the steering). The battery and oil lights came on, but the engine was still running. Ended up having to bump into the curb and stop the vehicle. Upon turning the ignition off and turning it back on, it was fine. Dealer does not know what the problem is inspite of having it for a couple days and driving it around. Suspects the steering lock unit may need to be replaced but is not sure since they were not able to replicate the issue nor were they able to see any logs of issues in the on-board computer. Vehicle is running ok now.

Experiencing recurrent electrical issues including multiple episodes of complete loss of engine power, power steering, and power braking while driving at 15-25 mph. This includes an episode of the vehicle's engine cutting off without warning during a turn on a busy street resulting in immediate loss of power steering and brakes, nearly resulting in a head-on collision. Vehicle will restart immediately and without difficulty after incident occurs. Vehicle has also experienced multiple episodes of a battery drawing down voltage and non-start in the morning despite a new and fully charged battery. Battery has been replaced and problem persisted. Software was updated yet problem continues to persist. No issues found by mechanic.

Our vehicle was stopped behind a single vehicle at a red light. Without warning, the vehicle accelerated and struck the car immediately in front of our vehicle. After striking the vehicle, our car then accelerated again into the intersection and was struck by a vehicle moving legally with a green light through the intersection. Our vehicle went to the curb where it accelerated once again which caused it to jump the curb and crash through a steel fence and into a light pole where it finally came to rest. There were three acceleration events with the driver's right foot off the gas pedal. The vehicle was deemed a total loss by the insurer, geico and was removed from service.

Safety recall campaign 11v-341: electric power steering (eps) assist the above recall covered vehicles manufactured between Feb 25, 2011 and June 8, 2011. My X3 was manufactured on June 4, 2011. Yet I was not notified of the recall and have had the power assist fail 3 times.
This complaint is in reference to NHTSA report 11v-341. It concerns a malfunction of a control module in the electronic power steering (eps) unit in 2011 BMW X3 passenger vehicles manufactured from April 27, 2011 through June 8, 2011. One of these 51 vehicles is ours. My concern is that BMW did not notify us of the recall even though the company has known about the malfunction since June 2011. . (BMW reported a safety recall to NHTSA on June 28, 2011, as documented in a letter of July 1, 2011 from NHTSA to BMW, acknowledging the recall. ) on Saturday November 19, 2011, the warning, "chassis stabilization malfunction!" appeared on the video display of our X3 following engine startup. At the same time, steering was more difficult than normal. An hour later, during engine re-start, the warning did not recur, and steering was normal. Personnel at our local BMW dealership were not able to explain our observations and told us via telephone to continue using the vehicle. In spite of that, we advised the dealership that we would bring the vehicle to them for evaluation on Monday, Nov 21. Subsequently, I found documentation on-line that confirmed the malfunction and our observations. At present, the vehicle remains at the dealership awaiting a replacement eps unit. I remain concerned that BMW did not contact us concerning the recall, and also that our local BMW dealership had apparently not been told of the issue. That is the reason for my complaint.
On 19 October my wife and I drove our new BMW X3 to a shopping center at the corner of gosnell and virginia route 7 near tysons corner virginia. When we attempted to drive the X3 out of the parking lot the steering wheel locked. The steering wheel could not be turned using both hands. The X3 would go forward. It would go backwards. However, the steering wheel would not turn to the left or right. After 30 to 45 minutes the tow truck arrived and I was able to turn the steering wheel. The X3 was towed to the BMW dealer. The failure was attributed to a steering angle sensor out of position. In my opinion, if the failure had occurred on the highway, we could have had a serious accident.
Car reports steering malfunction and electrical power steering assist is not provided. Appears similar to issue with power steering system covered by recall 11v341000, however Bmwna confirms this vehicle is not impacted by recall 11v341000.
The contact owns a 2011 BMW X3. The contact stated the vehicle would abnormally veer towards the right while driving at various speeds. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where they were unable to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was made not made aware of the failure. The failure and current mileages were 680. The VIN was unavailable.
Car veering to the right, increased on sudden stops; happens at various speeds. The prominent and dangerous condition is lag in acceleration. Sent the following e-mail to dealer& BMW along with 3 service reports from dealer attempts to address: "this X3 3. 5i with all it is electronic engine/drive train controls is a nightmare. It?s a huge design flaw that is going to kill someone eventually. Yet again, yesterday, I felt unsafe due to the hesitation. The car didn't move for about a second or two when I tried to make a left turn in an intersection and then again when I was on the highway changing lanes. There were cars heading towards me but the initial distance was quite comfortable and safe. With the hesitation of the X3, I was actually in a panic and stepped really hard on the gas pedal to avoid a potential collision. And since then I have been stepping on the gas pedal much harder, guzzling gas, not to mention rough starts off of a full stop. I have seen countless internet threads of people complaining about the same thing with the X3 model, both versions, however equipped. I would strongly suggest someone look at how this car?s software is failing to function and fix this thing. I will report the problem to the appropriate governmental agencies. The veering is still there and eventually I will come to pass the issue with the low tread life run-flats BMW's 2-23-11 visit, dealer aligned vehicle, kept car one day due to factory specs not yet being loaded on new vehicle model; on 7-13-11, dealer noted car left in transport mode, removed codes from computer software and car drove ok for 4 days; 7-23-11 took it back for same issue as noted above with lag in acceleration becoming dangerous and still veering, this time dealer noted nothing wrong with car after test drive comparison. Gave car back, still have issues which prompted e-mail.
I believe the steering angle sensor (aka szl) in my 2005 BMW X3 is faulty and thus poses a serious safety risk given its role in providing inputs to the dynamic stability control (dsc) system. It certainly warrants investigation. My vehicle has gone into an uncontrolled skid on three occasions, each time while traveling downhill at moderate speeds on curves. (only once did it do so following a light rain; on all other occasions the pavement was dry. ) luckily, no accidents or injuries ensued. I first noticed the problem the year I purchased the vehicle used in 2010; the previous owner likewise had noticed the issue and informed me of it at the time I purchased the vehicle. Today, sept. 15, 2014, my local BMW dealer proposed replacing the steering angle sensor (szl) in our vehicle, saying a readout of the fault codes detected faults in the sensor. I have elected to replace the sensor at a cost of $1098. Based on the seriousness of the issue, which some cursory investigating on my part appears to be a problem shared by multiple owners of similar model/year vehicles, I urge the NHTSA to investigate. Thank you.
On 10/27/08 I purchased and drove a 2007 cpo BMW X3 3. 0si sav from BMW encinitas in California. From the time I drove vehicle from the lot to my home the X3 pulled to the right. On 11/06/08 I took the vehicle back to BMW enciitas. The dealer performed a four wheel alignment and released the vehicle to me. During driving the vehicle home the car still pulled to the right, making it unsafe to drive. On 11/13/08 I took vehicle back to dealer for service. The dealer performed a wheel alignment again, and adjusted the camber to favor the left side. According to the shop foreman, a driving test was conducted and reported that the vehicle drove straight and released the vehicle to me. After I drove the vehicle home the vehicle continued to pull or veered to the right. Again this makes the vehicle unsafe to drive and difficult to control the steering. BMW of USA is refusing to accept that a problem exists with vehicle after several repair attempts.
BMW X3 is unsafe to drive on certain road conditions. It will swerve and come close to pulling into oncoming traffic. It is sudden and at times I have just avoided an accident. BMW said that they will not correct this and claims it is how the car is meant to drive. I feel that it is too dangerous and want this corrected or recalled.
