2 Tire problem of the 2022 BMW X3

Failure Date: 05/15/2024

Subject: tire safety concern – BMW oem pirelli cinturato p7 all season (utqg 500) 245 50 r19 I am writing to raise a serious vehicle safety concern involving the BMW oem pirelli cinturato p7 all season tires that came factory-installed on my leased 2022 BMW X3. These tires are labeled with a utqg 500 treadwear rating, which typically implies a lifespan of 40,000 to 50,000 miles. Yet, all four of my tires were found to be severely worn and unsafe at just 23,456 miles. More troubling, I began experiencing significant handling and traction issues as early as 18,000 miles. During normal driving—without aggressive braking, cornering, or high-speed use—the car exhibited: hydroplaning in moderate rain slipping and sliding under light acceleration noticeable vibration and poor stability on dry roads these symptoms were initially confusing until a routine service appointment at motorwerks BMW in bloomington, mn revealed that all four tires were nearly bald and posed a safety risk. The dealership confirmed the tread depth was between 1 and 2 mm—well below the safe limit—and told me, alarmingly, that this level of premature failure is typical for this tire. This raises two critical safety issues: the tires were functionally unsafe well before 20,000 miles, long before I was aware of the degradation. The utqg 500 label creates a false sense of security. A consumer would not expect traction loss or hydroplaning risks within the first 18,000–20,000 miles of normal use from a 500-rated tire. I have since learned that this oem tire, while labeled identically to the pirelli cinturato p7 all season plus sold at retail, is actually a different tire made specifically for BMW. It carries no treadwear warranty, despite its 500 label, and reportedly has never been separately tested to confirm its rating. Both BMW and pirelli have pointed fingers at each other, offering no solution or responsibility—leaving consumers with unsafe tires and no remedy. I urge NHTSA to investigate this issue.

3 Tire problem of the 2022 BMW X3

Failure Date: 02/01/2024

Only 18,000 miles driven and they are down to 3/32nds. Unacceptable. Vehicle is a 2022 BMW and tires have been rotated and tire pressure checked weekly. Completely unsafe now.

4 Tire problem of the 2015 BMW X3

Failure Date: 12/11/2021

Since tires installed on 9/2021, I have been having a worsening vibration noise. I took it to the installer who checked the balance of the wheels and tires and said there were no issues. The vibration continued. I took the car to an independent mechanic who inspected the vehicle. He said it's either the wheel bearings or the tires. The wheel bearings were replaced and I continued to have issues. The mechanic stated that when the vehicle was lifted and they ran the tires, the tires "wobbled". The independent mechanic felt strongly that the tires are defective and recommended returning to the installer for inspection and to correct this.

5 Tire problem of the 2021 BMW X3

Failure Date: 06/28/2021

Car only 9 months old, tread on both front tires bald, hydroplaning on wet roads. Almost was in an accident, I travel for work and got a BMW for reliability, I’m really second guessing my choice of cars right now. Bridgestone said tread is from out of alignment. BMW checked alignment and front is spot on. 13,000 miles on tires. Horrible driving experience in such a short time. Very disappointed that BMW would put such terrible tires on.

6 Tire problem of the 2016 BMW X3

Failure Date: 10/09/2017

Tire is a run flat type of tire and the wear of all four tires was severe on the inside of tire while tread across the rest of the tire was still satisfactory. Rear tire tread started separating and the vehicle had to be taken off the road due to the severity of the tread separation. Continued operation of the vehicle would have resulted in complete destruction of the tire and loss of control of the vehicle internet research indicates this to be a "common" problem with this vehicle and the manufacturer refuses to recognize the danger to the public.

7 Tire problem of the 2008 BMW X3

Failure Date: 04/06/2012

I was driving my vehicle when all four tires indicated a major malfunction of tire pressure warning. I immediately went to my local authorized dealer where it was discovered that all 4 tires needed to be replaced, the 2nd time in 2 years, because of interior deterioration from within the tire walls. It was explained to me that the nitrogen used to fill the tires, that are run flats, causes this. The cost to replace each tire was $274. 01. Mind you this is the second time in 2 years and the dealer and tire manufacturer refuse to rectify this issue as well as make good on any warranties that are still in affect.
