general problems of the 2011 BMW X5 - part 1

The contact owns a 2011 BMW X5. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. The vehicle was towed to an unknown dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer informed the contact that the VIN was not under recall. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 132,000.

After BMW replaced my battery on 1/11/24, a check engine light immediately appeared. It said that the scr active tank needed to be replaced and it would cost upwards of $3,000. I immediately found a NHTSA bulletin that informed that this particular part had been on recall, but had a 10 year/120k mile limitation. My car only had 101k miles, but BMW denied my recall work on goodwill because they say it was well past 10 years of my in-service date. The warranty, however, should still be effective, as many customers have different rates of utilization and I am still 19k short of the mileage limitation, which should not be time limited. BMW worked with the NHTSA for a reason - they acknowledged that they had a flawed part, and this needs to be changed at their expense, not passed on as $3,000 unfairly to the customer. The contact owns a 2011 BMW. The contact stated that while stopped at a stop sign, the vehicle unexpectedly turned off and independently went into neutral. Engine failure reduced power warning message was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the failure was due to a faulty variable valve timing system. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and determined that the VIN was not included in a recall. The failure mileage was approximately 107,000.

Passport BMW told us that there was a recall on the engine of our X5 and asked if we had to add oil periodically; our answer was yes. We were told that the engine failed the oil consumption test performed by passport BMW and the engine needed to be replaced. Passport then said that we had to pay for the replacement of the engine, $2,500. The engine has been replaced, however the engine still leaks oil and now also leaks antifreeze additionally, engine malfunction is displayed permanently on the dashboard.

I was driving to work one morning on the highway, when I suddenly heard a loud sharp noise from the engine bay that followed with the engine and battery lights turning blinking on my display with sudden loss of steering. I panicked but quickly put my vehicle into neutral with my hazard lights on and slowly hit my brakes till I came to a complete stop on the highway. I got my vehicle towed back and upon further inspection saw that the idler pulley bolt snapped completely off. I researched and saw that this bolt has been recalled twice already with the same issue. If this was during a heavy traffic situation it could have been far worse.

As I was slowing down to make a turn, the vehicle went into neutral and shut off. I immediately turned it back on and put it in drive and the same thing occurred moments later. I start it again and drove away enough to safely park. I let the car rest in the off position for 30 minutes and it drove fine. There were no warning lights and the vehicle is well maintained with scheduled services. I contacted the nearest reputable mechanic and explained the situation. I drove it there. They found no faulty codes when they plugged in the computer and the battery has no issues. The vehicle drives fine now, but this is very concerning especially since this took place in local traffic.

Our car get on fire from begin low on oil, we stopped on the side and went on another car to get oil at the gas station and suddenly star on fire and our entire car truck burned. Luckily we were able to get out off the car on time.

My vehicle has symptoms of the auxiliary water pump for turbocharger going bad. Th epump is noisy, and smells very hot/burnt. There was a recall in 2011-2012 that was done on my car for this part, however it appears the same issues are currently arising. Under the 0011730400 b110518 recall: electronic auxiliary coolant pump , updated in 2018, my vehicle isn't listed as affected, however I believe it should be.

The suvs drive belt has come loose and was ingested through the front crankshaft seal, causing engine issues such as oil starvation leading to engine damage and unknown check engine codes. The SUV has been confirmed to have belt fragments inside the engine. I have video documentation.

BMW USA is hidden recall information and repair history and I am worried about cause I don’t know what they change or do of my care I need this information please.

Vehicle indicated the engine was operating at reduced power, unable to accelerate and barely able to pull over. Speed was reduced to 5mph in the middle of the highway.

The contact stated that after stopping then attempting to accelerate the vehicle, the vehicle would hesitate. In addition, the vehicle jerked when turning or decelerating. On a separate occasion, the air bag warning light flashed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer (roadshow BMW, address: 405 n germantown pkwy #6207, cordova, TN 38018, phone: (901) 365-2584) who informed the contact that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign numbers: 16v746000 (fuel system, gasoline), as well as, the recalls for the air bags and engine (NHTSA campaign numbers unknown). The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who referred the contact to NHTSA to file a complaint. The approximate failure mileage 190,000.

Driveshaft failure.

I got an engine malfunction warning light on my 2011 BMW X5. I brought it to a mechanic who told me the issue is the high pressure fuel pump. There is a recall for other Bmws although mine is not on the list. The mechanic indicated this is an ongoing issue for my BMW and should be covered by a recall.

I have received an engine code 4bcc " passive tank fill sensor" for my 2011 BMW X5d. This is in the the emission system def tank. This appears from my research that it is a frequent problem.

The contact owns a 2011 BMW X5. Approximately ten minutes after the contact parked the vehicle in the garage, the fire alarm activated. After returning to the garage, the contact noticed flames and smoke coming from under the hood of the vehicle. The contact used a fire extinguisher to extinguish the flames. The fire department was called to the scene and a fire report was filed. The cause of the failure was not determined. The dealer and manufacturer were not notified. The failure mileage was 140,000.

The vehicles oil was change at the BMW mechanic. Shortly after driving away, the engine started to malfunction. Returned vehicle and they stated that the vanos were damage and needed to be replaced. This was a previous issue for the BMW vanos systems and there decision was to extend the warranty another 10 years. I have not received such letter stating this and the BMW facility wants to charge me.

Burning smell inside car cabin. Immediate loss of power during acceleration. Engine stops abruptly coast to the side of the road and restart. Today is the second time, the first time happened two weeks ago.

The vehicle engine was internally knocking which one dealership told me to keep driving it and bring it back at my appointment a week later and another dealership avidsed me not to drive the car as they were having a global issue with these engines and the engine could seize up. . . If I were on the highway or roadway and the engine seized up it could have caused a serious accident.

Engine clicks when accelerating or deceleration.

�takata recall� when the heat or ac is on air from vent start to burn my eyes. Whenever I'm in my vehicle I leave out feeling sleepy. Cabin filter has been changed as well as others problem continues. Also the leather on the dash board is pulling away from the vent. Plastic wood trim cracks over time leaving the vehicle looking cheaply built.

I was told I have issues with the nox sensor and scr catalyst. I have also been preovusly told that the entire diesel emissions system was faulty and it would cost me $6000 to repair. Because I have 155k miles on the car nothing falls under warranty. BMW is also unsure that the oxygen sensor is really the problem so it will cost me $1000 to replace that and hope it works. The issue now is my car is giving me a message "incorrect diesel fluid" even though there is correct fluid in (since the dealer is the only one who has ever put any in there) and is at the full level. The sensor is now saying I only have 60 miles to drive it before it won't start again. Dtc p21a8: fault for level sensors in passive scr tank (replace passive tank and evaluator). Similar to previous recall fault for the active scr tank.

The coolant lines needed completely replaced causing the engine to start barreling smoke after about 400-500 ft. Looked like it was on fire there was so much smoke. Got repaired at BMW of westlake in ohio. They told me there was nothing I could do to have prevented it.

Car would not starter on may 20th 2017 had a car tow to BMW of silver spring,MD Thursday night was told Monday that tech ran diagonostict scan and found faults stored for stater tech recommendend replacing starter $1400 I decline had truck towed to rossi's automotive 903 selim rd. Silver spring,MD 20910 where the car is now waiting to be towed back to BMW of silver spring. Been without my vehicle since may 20th ,2017. Had driven my car a full year . Still paying geico and navy federal credit union $32,747. 85.

On Saturday may 6th 2017. I was driving when I heard this noise to my untrained ear it seemed as if the noise was coming from my front tires? I pulled over got out to check my front tires/wheel's and there was nothing, I get back into my vehicle and start driving again after a few minutes the same noise could be heard again so once again I pulled over got out and checked my tires/wheels and undercarriage. As I am looking there is nothing hanging or loose, I get back into the vehicle and started to head towards my house I was only about 6 blocks away from home so I call my fianc�e and asked he to come outside (I wanted her to drive the vehicle just a little so that I could see if my wheels were doing anything strange, this would help me to better explain what I through was happing to my vehicles wheels/tires) as soon as I hang the phone up I slowed down to go over a speed hump at the time I did not notice but I had lost power in the vehicle as I tried to use my breaks the vehicle did nothing and I do mean nothing so now I am rolling straight and go through two stop signs hoping and praying that one hits me, due to the vehicle having no power. A message shows up on the screen saying �transmission malfunction� the malfunction maybe resolved by restarting. Contract nearest BMW center if necessary. Use emerg. Release to disengage park detention prior to towing or pushing vehicle. Now mine you this message only showed after the vehicle lost all power. As I am going through the second stop sign there is a slightl/small hill that I went up and the vehicle lost enough speed that I was able to smash the brakes real hard to stop the vehicle from moving. A car all most hit me in the rest because of this action, and now I am sitting on this slight hill holding my foot on the break. Once the vehicle was towed to a BMW dealership I was told about the driveshaft recall.

Previous vanos recall campaing fix is not working. After one years replacement bolts are loose and loud engine knocking is back. If continue driving bolts will be sheared and break timing chain causing engine to suddenly loose power and shut down with no previous warning. When engine rpm reaches the 2000 mark engine starts to loose power and hesitates due to the bad vanos bolts. BMW is refusing to repair the vanos unit and replace the bolts under warranty.

Engine malfunction reduced power output. Driving on a highway my BMW X5 suddenly started misfiring and heard noise from the engine. After couple of misfires it have eninge malfunction reduced power output warning. Had a vanos bolt replaced as part of recall but this is happening more often. I think there is serious issue with BMW eninge. Can anyone help.

Margining onto freeway accelerated car suddenly lost power went into neutral and brakes went hard engine malfunction lights on the dash build date Dec 2010 falls into vanos repair fixed once already and has made the vehicle inoperable BMW corporate is claiming not at fault when hundreds of cases have been reported online every vehicle made from Feb 2010-Dec 2010 is a ticking bomb.

The panel read "engine malfunction " I was in a daze not knowing what happen to the BMW X5 35i 2011 awd and why did it stop all of sudden !!! I started again at a very slow pace less than 10 mph and trying to get out of the way of traffic on the exit on 230 street , I made it too the veterans affairs hospital at 8:30 or 9:00 am in the morning . I called aaa to tow to a shop than I was found out this BMW X5 35i 2011 awd had a recall so I got it tow too portchester BMW where the vehicle is at now and don't when I will get back . If this is the problem with this BMW X5 35i 2011 awd this BMW X5 35i 2011 awd should never be on any us road at all its an accident ready to happen very dangerous ,very dangerous for a BMW X5 35i 2011 awd to have a sudden stop " engine malfunction " some one is going too die in this BMW X5 35i 2011 its too dangerous to drive and risk my life a us marine veteran . While driving on the highway suddenly car registered a fault saying "engine problems - reduced power" causing me to swerve and nearly causing an accident . . . The car drastically reduced power and I was able to limp home with reduced speed.

This complaint specifically addresses the recall listed below. Even though this recall was issued in April, no resolution has been available. The very thing the recall was trying to prevent, happened to me and my family. Report receipt date: Apr 10, 2014 NHTSA campaign number: 14v176000 I was stranded Friday, 09/19/14, along with my wife and dog by my new to me X5. Yes, it was the vanos recall bolts that failed. The car only made it a few hundred yards after the cel and engine malfunction lights came on. The car shook, sputtered, and died and would not restart. We were left in a dangerous situation. Additionally, since the car would not start, we could not get it into neutral. It ended up taking us more than 5 hours to get a tow truck that had the equipment that would help us. No tow truck operator knows how or is willing to crawl under and remove the transmission cover and unlock the gears. The lack of ability to go this electronic transmission into neutral is really unbelievable. I cannot imagine a much more unsafe scenario. I checked on the vanos bolts recall twice in the last month and was told no parts were available. This recall should have been handled in a timely manner and not left until the car fails and places it's owners in a very dangerous situation. I'm waiting to hear back from BMW of nashville about how extensive the damage is to internals, but they already called and said it is sheared / broken vanos bolts. Specifically the recall issue. P. S. This happened on Friday. I tried to get a loaner car, Friday, Saturday, and today and am told none are available. We never ran into that situation with our last 2 vehicles, which were both Infiniti's. It's ridiculous that I am stranded and can't even get to work due to a recall for a car that only has 47k miles.

The car warning light came on as "reduced power". Took the car into crevier BMW in santa ana. There is a recall on the vanos system for our car. We have had multiple problems before this as well. Last June, the engine oil housing unit was replaced. Now the problem points to the vanos on the diagnostic test done at the dealer. However, the dealer and BMW north America will not address the issues. Both keep telling us that the "parts are not available" and that there is a recall on the vehicle but will look into it only when or if the parts become available. Thus, for them to repair the issues right now, we would need to pay. This seems to be a scam and convenience on their part not to address the issues. I would ask NHTSA to please look into this type of practice and make BMW responsible and accountable to their customers. Thank you.

My 2011 X5 35i has an acceleration delay. BMW has recognized it as an issue in the 535i models, calling it an "acceleration delay" and have issued an sib software update to repair it, but have not done so for the X5 model. I feel this issue is dangerous and a safety issue.
