Cruise Control Problems of BMW X5

BMW X5 owners have reported 4 problems related to cruise control (under the vehicle speed control category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Cruise Control problem of the 2018 BMW X5

Failure Date: 09/14/2018

This brand new car I bought has the options of "advanced safety system" which was supposed to prevent a collision. I was driving on adaptive cruise control, 4 car distance on highway. As I was driving close to the exit where I needed to take, adaptive cruise control did not seem to be working since I noticed that the car was not slowing down as I was approaching the car in front of me. I pressed on the brake to slow down my vehicle, but the vehicle did not respond to my braking. I pressed down brake as hard as possible to stop the vehicle, but my vehicle continued to move without stopping until it (first car) hit the car in front of it and the car in front of the second car hit the third car. Automatic emergency braking should have kicked in to prevent collision, but it did not. This car was supposed to give me forward-collision warning sign as it was approaching the car in the front, but it never did. Sensor might have not been working at the time of incident.

2 Cruise Control problem of the 2008 BMW X5

Failure Date: 08/15/2014

On a recent ride home from vacation (summer 2014), my family and I had to endure our 2008 BMW X5 stalled out and slowed to about 30 mph on interstate 95. There were no warnings of a potential problem or any upcoming maintenance needed. The information screen stated cruise control/engine malfunction. We were extremely surprised, overly alarmed and frightened as this was a dangerous and unsafe event. We were not using and have never used the cruise control. My family was scared of this unsafe ordeal but thank god, no one was injured. After researching these conditions, we found this similar incident occur to many other X5 BMW owners and date back as far as 2001. This throttle body defect is a safety issue and can cause bodily harm or death. If this car decreases in power, especially on an interstate, serious and deadly accidents can occur. Quite interesting is that this same diagnosis was identified with previous owners who've only owned their vehicles less than a year. Research shows this condition has been an issue for the past 10 years and BMW has not acknowledged, recalled and corrected the problem. My 2008 BMW X5 has about 52,000 and receive regular maintenance on time and as required. More important, the day before the incident we checked the vehicle system check and all systems were "ok. " and two days later, the car shut down with no warning. My car was taken to northwest BMW in owings mills who diagnosed the problem as a throttle body defect.

3 Cruise Control problem of the 2003 BMW X5

Failure Date: 07/20/2012

While driving on a freeway at about 80 miles per hour, with the cruise control on, it was necessary to dis-engage the cruise control for a slower vehicle. When I then applied my foot to the gas pedal, it suddenly felt unstable and wobbly. I found it difficult to maintain steady pressure on it and maintain my speed in heavy freeway traffic. I was very uncomfortable with the situation. Fortunately I was just 20 miles from my destination, and I was able to very carefully and repeatedly re-position my foot on the gas pedal to maintain speed in heavy traffic. Upon arriving at my destination, I examined the gas pedal, only to find most of it had detached from the floorboard - a thin, flimsy web of plastic that held the gas pedal to the floorboard had split at the floorboard, causing the problem. Only about 15 or 20% of the attachment remained. Had 100% of the attachment failed, I would certainly have lost all accelerator control in traffic and at high speed, a potentially dangerous scenario. It is my opinion that the design of this gas pedal is defective, which led to the problem at only 33500 miles! I complained to BMW u. S. A with no satisfaction. I claimed that they should be responsible for the repair cost due to faulty design, which constitutes lifetime responsibility outside of the warranty period. They did not agree. I also feel the extreme heat conditions present in the desert southwest where I live may have also contributed to the failure. I am reporting this incident in the hope it may prevent a similar, possibly more serious failure for someone else owning a BMW. I have retained the failed gas pedal and can provide pictures to you if you like.
