5 Driveshaft problem of the 2012 BMW X5

Failure Date: 05/27/2019

While driving 75 mph 250 miles away from home the drive shaft on my BMW X5 broke. I think the recall number is 17v-138. I was on a major highway in the left lane. The car was bucking around, smoking and was very very difficult to steer. Before this the car was driving perfectly. It happened in an instant. I was able to get to the side of the road without injuring myself or my passengers. I had my car towed to a local garage who said it was catastrophic. I looked up on your website and saw the drive shaft was a recall. I was never informed of this by BMW. I had my home garage go get it. They sent it to a BMW dealer who had it over 2 months. They replaced the engine. It was returned to my garage. I drove it about 10 miles before the transmission warning light came on and the car lost the inability to accelerate. I was on the thruway so this was very scary. BMW is saying this has nothing to do w the drive shaft breaking and killing the engine as parts were flying around inside. 5 days before the original incident I had the car checked over by my garage as I was going on a trip. I was told my car should have the transmission fluid and filter changed next time in but it wasn't urgent. I am now looking at a $5000 repair. Obviously this is from the catastrophe. BMW should pay for this repair, reimburse me for all the towing charges and reimburse my garage for letting me have a loaner for over 2 months. Please help. I have pictures and will try to upload them.

8 Driveshaft problem of the 2017 BMW X5

Failure Date: 05/22/2017

While returning from texas and driving at highway speeds my car's drivetrain warning light said I needed service but I could continue driving at moderate speeds. I drove to BMW of dallas. They determined my #5-cylinder fuel injector had failed. I stayed the night in dallas and returned to the dealership the next day. After replacing the injector, the car would not idle properly. I drove a rental car home and left my car. The dealership did extensive testing to determine the cause of the issue over the next three and a half weeks. Eventually they determined the injector failure caused a backfire which bent the #5 intake valve. The engine had to be removed so they could replace the damaged components. All valves had to be lapped; the valve stem seals had to be replaced and the engine had to be reinstalled. The vehicle was transported to me 26 days later. I discovered three of the five screws which secure the battery cover were missing. I drove the car for the next three days after which it began making clanking noises from the driveshaft. The car was towed to BMW of kansas city south who determined the dallas dealership failed to install one of the driveshaft's carrier bolts nor did they properly torque a second carrier bolt. These are serious personal safety concerns. These repairs were also reported to carfax as regularly scheduled maintenance. I filed a formal complaint with BMW of north America and asked that they repurchase the vehicle which they refused to do. Instead they have offered me a small cash settlement if I will sign a general release waiving my rights and agreeing that I not to pursue any future claims or legal actions against them or their dealerships. I'm reporting this as I am concerned these issues may be prevalent with other BMW X5 vehicles which could potentially result in serious injury or death.

11 Driveshaft problem of the 2011 BMW X5

Failure Date: 05/06/2017

On Saturday may 6th 2017. I was driving when I heard this noise to my untrained ear it seemed as if the noise was coming from my front tires? I pulled over got out to check my front tires/wheel's and there was nothing, I get back into my vehicle and start driving again after a few minutes the same noise could be heard again so once again I pulled over got out and checked my tires/wheels and undercarriage. As I am looking there is nothing hanging or loose, I get back into the vehicle and started to head towards my house I was only about 6 blocks away from home so I call my fiance and asked he to come outside (I wanted her to drive the vehicle just a little so that I could see if my wheels were doing anything strange, this would help me to better explain what I through was happing to my vehicles wheels/tires) as soon as I hang the phone up I slowed down to go over a speed hump at the time I did not notice but I had lost power in the vehicle as I tried to use my breaks the vehicle did nothing and I do mean nothing so now I am rolling straight and go through two stop signs hoping and praying that one hits me, due to the vehicle having no power. A message shows up on the screen saying transmission malfunction the malfunction maybe resolved by restarting. Contract nearest BMW center if necessary. Use emerg. Release to disengage park detention prior to towing or pushing vehicle. Now mine you this message only showed after the vehicle lost all power. As I am going through the second stop sign there is a slightl/small hill that I went up and the vehicle lost enough speed that I was able to smash the brakes real hard to stop the vehicle from moving. A car all most hit me in the rest because of this action, and now I am sitting on this slight hill holding my foot on the break. Once the vehicle was towed to a BMW dealership I was told about the driveshaft recall.

12 Driveshaft problem of the 2011 BMW X5

Failure Date: 04/12/2017

Driveshaft recall- when operating the vehicle low and high speed, vibrations can be felt throughout the car. When taken to the mechanic, there was some foreplay in the driveshaft and could have given out at any moment. Had the driveshaft gave out while the vehicle is in motion at higher speed, results could have been fatal. The issue has already been addressed by the NHTSA for the same model of later production dates. Main concern is why are the vehicles before the covered productions dates and models that have the same issues not being covered? parking brake malfunction- parking brake motor fails which causes the parking brakes to be locked. Driver and passengers were stranded. Based on independent research, this is a common issue with BMW vehicles. This should be addressed.

14 Driveshaft problem of the 2013 BMW X5

Failure Date: 03/01/2017

I don't know why BMW would take so long to fix a recall on my car. It's been 6 months and they don't have the parts. It doesn't make any sense, the drive shaft is a safety issue. I took my car to BMW and they can not fix the recall yet because I have to wait for the final notice.

15 Driveshaft problem of the 2011 BMW X5

Failure Date: 03/01/2017

2011 BMW X5 35i xdrive - my drive shaft broke (violent banging noise from the front of the car) while I was going 65 miles per hour on the freeway causing me to swerve to the left lane back over to the right lane. Super lucky that I barely missed hitting the cars next to me! I had hardly any control of the vehicle and the engine was still running while I coasted over to the side of the road / ditch. I lost almost 7 quarts of oil on the side of the road. My engine has a hole in it from the drive shaft. I did not receive a recall notice in the mail. The manufacture will be replacing my engine and some hoses that were destroyed. The dealer said this wasn't a recall, just an extended warranty since we have approx. 70,000 miles on the car. The dealer gave us a loaner car to use until our car is repaired. My concern is that owners should be notified immediately! had I known, I would of had my car inspected. . . Now I'm out $325 dollars for towing expenses, a car that might not ever be quite the same, live 1hr 20 minutes from the dealer, and the memory of the dramatic event.

19 Driveshaft problem of the 2012 BMW X5

Failure Date: 08/30/2016

Driveshaft failure. I was driving down the interstate on a straight and level section of the road. I heard a loud humming from the engine area so I slowed down and then I heard a loud pop and metal grinding and hitting under the car. My vehicle is out of warranty, so I had it towed to my independent mechanic that specializes in european vehicles. They said the driveshaft "fell apart" and as I was slowing down it was still spinning and banged around causing damage to my exhaust system and oil pan. I researched and found that 2011 vehicles had been recalled for a defect that could cause the driveshaft to fail, so I called BMW and they told me that since my vehicle was not listed on the recall that there was nothing they could do. I tried calling them again in regards to the prior year's recall and asked if it may include 2012 model vehicles at a later date and they could not give me an answer. It seems strange that a vehicle manufactured 4 months after a recall has the same issue but somehow it is not covered. I called my local BMW service center and they told me that they added a 10 year warranty onto the driveshaft parts, but I must not have been notified. So if I would have taken it to them, they would have fixed it for free, but since I didn't, they couldn't do anything for me. The NHTSA campaign # for the 2011 X5 16v311000.

26 Driveshaft problem of the 2008 BMW X5

Failure Date: 10/11/2015

In October of 2015 while making a right turn very slowly into a one lane drive thru, my BMW X5 accelerated climbed up a 2 foot wall that was on the drivers side rode the front drivers side wheel upon the wall. I tried to break and pull the hand brake the car would not stop. I turned the steering wheel to the right the car hopped off the wall on to the ground and I turned off the car. The car just accelerated so fast and hard my sister and I could not believe how it climbed the tile wall with one wheel and came down to the ground. Now I had just got the car back from the dealership 5 days earlier when they replaced the water pump and replaced the 2 front tires and did a wheel alignment a $2500. 00 job. It was very scary luckily there was no people or another car close by. I immediately called the dealership and took it in the next morning. I explained what happened I felt that the car had a malfunction with the accelerator it made the car go so fast and hard. It wasn't just a crash into the wall it climbed the wall. Of course BMW said the engineer said there is nothing wrong with the brakes or drive shaft? what gets to me is that I just got the car back from the local dealership. I feel like the power of the vehicle was so strong and powerful there was no way that it could hop on the wall like that and not just crash straight into the wall. Oh side note the very next morning 10-12-2015 my sister heard on abc morning news that a BMW SUV just ran into a glass window at a store the car accelerated on it's own!.
