BMW X5 owners have reported 9 problems related to headlights (under the exterior lighting category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of BMW X5 based on all problems reported for the X5.
Headlights continually fog up and puddle water in them. It takes a major effort to dry them out. Dealer says they are vented and that they will clear themselves but don't. This is a continual problem and poses a safety issue because of headlight failure.

My vehicle has not been involved in any accidents as a function of this design flaw. The following occurs when vehicle is in motion or stationary: during daytime driving, when headlights are not turned on, the digital instrument panel and digital control panel dim undesirably, making them difficult to read and creating unsafe driving conditions. This is undesirable behavior is most prevalent on cloudy days and at sunrise and sunset. The dimming needs to be inactive if headlights are off. If headlights are on, it needs to be inactive if bright light is detected through windshield (sunrise, sunset) -or- if bright light is detected inside the cabin.
I was driving my 2015 X5 (bought it new in March and the car only has 2599 miles right when the malfunction happened on Aug 8th 2015) to a local trader joe's after getting off from highway 101 when suddenly everything on the car failed. I was in the middle of a left turn and almost ran into the car next to me which also was turning left when the steering wheel became so stiff that I can hardly turn it. At the same time, the airbag malfunction light is on and the safety belt restraint system failed. The safety belt became so loose that it didn't even hold/restrain me during the turn. The speed meter also failed and it showed 0 and even though when I was driving. Other failures include headlight and turning light. The right turning would always turn itself on no matter what. I was able to park my car in a safe location but this really scared the t out of me. When I pressed the brake and the stop engine button, the car didn't even shut down the engine. Other failures include tpm malfunction, parking brake reduced, parking assistant malfunction and headlamp vertical aim control malfunction. It's been an hour since I called for a towing car and I'm waiting anxiously for it while my car has its engine on the whole time. I own a 2011 x3 and never had any problem with it. I bought this X5 in March and it only has 2599 miles on it. I can't imagine what would happen if everything failed just when I was driving on the 101 highway which is about 3 minutes before all of these happened. Does anyone know what I can do? I don't know if I can trust this car any more even if after they fix it. This is so dangerous and could be a disaster if it happened on the highway.

My complaint is about a problem that I believe is getting seriously out of hand -- that of increasing numbers of cars and suvs on the road with extremely bright headlights. I am 52. I don't believe it's a vision problem. For fifty years or so, I generally had no problem with oncoming headlights. Then cars with these new high-intensity beams started appearing on roads. These lights are painful to my eyes. They make it difficult for me to see. I want to avert my eyes but I know I must keep my eyes on the road. At first I hoped they would just go away or be outlawed, but the problem has only gotten worse as more new vehicles with these lights enter the road. Combine high-intensity lights with an SUV and it is a painful and blinding experience to have one of these vehicles coming head-on or from behind, with the lights reflecting in my rearview mirrors. I see no sense in making it easier for those with these offensive lights to see better when it blinds everyone else. But soon everyone will be blinded when all cars have them -- unless it is stopped now. Please do what you can to get these bright lights off the road and let people go back to the type of headlights that worked just fine for 100 years. Thank you,
wes cogan.

The headlights found on these expesnive vehicles are too bright and produce excessive glare especially when combined with the headaux (fog/driving) lights that these drivers insist on running at the same time. If you decide to continue to allow these lights at least limit the bulbs to low beam lights without any aux lights allowed on the vehicle.

Xenon headlights do not provide adequate lighting in front of vehicle unless high beams are on causing poor visibility. Nlm.
Vehicle has extremely bright daytime running lights which are very distracting for other drivers.
