My daughter was put in the backseat in a hot (100f) car and strapped in. My wife placed her purse (keys in it) on the middle console. The door was shut and locked on its own, locking my child in the car. We called BMW assist to remotely unlock the car. This did not work. Police and fire was called and showed up on seen. A neigbor fireman came and broke the window. The car still would not unlock and my wife crawled through the broken window cutting her leg to get my now hot, red and lethargic child out of the car. Afterward, the car still would not unlock for 2 hours.

7 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2009 BMW X5

Failure Date: 06/18/2010

My wife had a harrowing experience with the 09 BMW-x5 locking itself with the key in the car. Remote key was inside the car in her purse on the passenger seat- untouched by anyone. Car was parked with engine off. Car locked itself after our two kids were secured in the backseats and their doors shut with my wife outside! it was over 90 degrees outside and she did not have much time to call for help. My 5 year old's attempts to open the door resulted in alarm going off and everything shut down. Finally, by luck, she was able to guide the 5 year old to get to the front seat and locate the key from the purse and unlock the car. If it was only the 2 year old inside, she had no option but to break the window! this is a really scary situation for a luxury car and a brand new one. It had never happened to us. Surely we do not want to experience this again and wish it on no one else! we suspect that it had to be something to do with the electronics. It has not occurred again in the last 3 days. The remote key in these cars are designed in such a way that the car should not be able to lock itself with the key inside the car and the driver out!.

8 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2004 BMW X5

Failure Date: 12/26/2009

Latch jam on driver door of BMW X5 year 2004. The door will not always shut when it is very cold. It will take 30 to 45 minutes after the car warms up to shut. BMW of north America does not claim this is faulty for a recall. They have received other complaints with this issue on older model X5's. Since alot of the X5's are not outside as much as mine (I. E. Overnight) you will not have a huge amount of complaints. The complaints will be with the ones that are in the cold weather regions of american and are outside for extended period of times and very frequently outside. . This issue is a safety hazard that BMW of north America should recall and fix.

9 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2004 BMW X5

Failure Date: 12/20/2009

We have a 2004 BMW X5, and the driver's door inside opening mechanism has broken twice; once under warranty and once after. The repair costs nearly $800, so many will not pay to have it fixed. The problem endangers the driver if in an accident and needing to exit the vehicle, and it is caused by the routing of the cable through a plastic part.

10 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2002 BMW X5

Failure Date: 08/21/2009

I own the 2002 BMW x2. I have run into the problem of the rear passenger (right-side) door unlock. It cannot be unlocked both from the outside and inside of the door. I did some research on the web sites. There is not a way to open the door. Dealer has to unbolt the whole door in order to get it out. The same problem can occur to any of the doors (or all) at the same time. Most people (including myself) are having concern about the safety of the passengers/drivers if the door cannot be opened from the inside in the case of emergency (such as the Lexus' acceleration problem or fire/smoke) especially the kids cannot break the window's glass. Can the NHTSA ask BMW be responsible for making corrective action ASAP? or BMW will wait to take action after enough people die from the bad design. I have not fixed my door (since BMW will charge thousands of dollars). And I have a 3 1/2 years old kid. I think that BMW needs to recall this neglected problem.

11 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2003 BMW X5

Failure Date: 02/04/2009

I own a 2003 X5. I live in NY. Whenever the weather goes below 20 degrees my door locks freeze. I am able to pull open the drivers side door, but once I get in and try to close it the door swings back open. I have pulled the door closed and manually pushed down the lock, but when I try to exit the car I am locked in. The locks will not open and I am stuck in the car until it warms up. There have been times that I had to crawl over to the passenger side door to get out. The windows will not go down and the locks will not engage. I have taken the truck to the dealer and they state that there is nothing that they can do. I have had to sit in the car over 30 minutes in order for the locks to unfreeze so that I can exit the car. This is a safety hazard and I believe it should be looked into. Maybe the locks can have some type of protective material put on them so they do not succumb to freezing temperatures so easily. I purchased this truck specifically for the winter and find it troubling that the winter is the worst time for this vehicle. This has happened 5 times this winter so far and we are only in February with many more cold days to come.

12 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2004 BMW X5

Failure Date: 05/29/2008

On may 21, 2008, I reported a problem regarding my BMW X5 having a door failure problem regarding the electronic system. On may 29, 2008 I was in a motor vehicle accident. The accident was not my fault. I was hit from behind. My son and I were injured. I had to be extracted from the vehicle. The emergency personal could not open the passenger door to remove me from the vehicle. They had to go through the back seat. I had complained to you and BMW regarding the safety hazard of this vehicle. BMW was slow to reply. The original reply was that I didn't provide a clear explanation regarding this issue. So, I complained again. There response was untimely and this entire safety issue has resulted in a very traumatic experience. I had advised you and BMW that this was a safety issue. No one responded in a timely manner. How many more families will have to experience this type of trauma before you recall this vehicle? what are you going to do about this? this is a safety issue and should be addressed.

13 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2004 BMW X5

Failure Date: 03/01/2008

Our 2004, BMW x-5 door jammed on the front passenger side. I have contacted BMW, but they denied any problems concerning doors jamming. However, I conducted an internet search and found numerous postings discussing the door jamming. I advised BMW that I feel like my families safety is at risk due to the door failure. I asked them to please note that this was a safety risk and could put my family at risk. This is my only vehicle that I have to transport my family, due to my husband being activated with the military. BMW denied any problems with the door. None of the passenger doors can be opened with a manual key or a manual release. None of the devices on the vehicle will open the passenger door. Nothing works. We can't remove the panel, because we can't open the door. This is a major safety risk and I fear that my family and numerous other families lives are at risk due to this problem. I am requesting immediate assistance and an investigation regarding the BMW door failure. The problem started, with a delay in the door unlocking upon pressing the buttons to open the door. Then, it just stopped working completely. I tried to get an appointment with the local BMW dealership, but it would be weeks before I could get assistance. And I have been advised that this expense will come out of my pocket, b/c it's not listed as a recall or safety hazard. How can a door failure not be a safety hazard?.

14 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2001 BMW X5

Failure Date: 12/28/2007

Front doors are freezing up in cold weather. Once the temperature rises the doors will open. Happens early in the morning/ late night when I need to leave for work. Sometimes you can force the handle to open but then the door will not close and have to drive holding the door shut. There must be a recall on this, there have been so many complaints about this issue. This has happened to me dozens of times. Went to dealer many times, replaced bowden cable/actuators. Cost me $600. 00 to fix, will see if it works next winter.

15 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2001 BMW X5

Failure Date: 02/09/2005

I have a 2001 BMW X5 which has problems with freezing front doors (BMW has acknowledged the design defect, reference # 200503100195, si 510204, and s. I. 51 51 02 dated March 2002. ) that pose a significant safety hazard, and have not received an adequate response in dealing with the matter. I have filed a complaint with the NHTSA. I am an active duty army officer stationed in garmisch, germany. The car was with us in California and kansas from 2001 to 2004. The car did not have the door freezing problems while under warranty; we kept it in a garage and the bowden cables did not get wet during cold weather. We have no garage here, and any time the weather gets a few degrees below freezing, the front doors cease to operate. One must run the car between 15 minutes to 1. 5 hours before the doors operate normally. When the car cools down, the doors freeze again. The problem with the doors here in germany is severe and poses a significant safety risk; does BMW really want to risk litigation for someone trapped in the car in the event of an accident? I do not understand why the car was not recalled for such a serious and acknowledged safety design defect. Our local dealership in garmisch is unable to locate the below si in his database. He does not know how to fix the problem. I am also disturbed that I will have to pay upwards of $1000 to fix the problem---this would have been covered under warranty and should have been fixed when the car went under services in late winter of 2004 (and also had other si work done, such as a faulty radiator fan that could have caused the car to burn----heck of a combination if the freezing doors had been acting up at the same time!).

16 Latches/locks/linkage problem of the 2002 BMW X5

The contact owns a 2002 BMW X5. On April 9, 2009, after parking in the driveway, the contact exited the vehicle. She went to the back of the vehicle to get her child out, but the doors were locked. This vehicle has only one keyless entry located on the driver's side. The contact stated that this was her first time experiencing this failure with the vehicle.
