Described by BMW as a "malfunctioning passenger restraint system", the sensor detecting weight in the seats is faulty without any external factors. The safety of both minors and adults is placed at risk when a system like this malfunctions, either keeping the airbag on or off. The automatically-adjusting seatbelt is also affected by this. There was a warning message for this displayed.

I received a message of restraint system malfunction and when I called the local dealer I was told the part is not availabel anywhere in the USA. What am I supposed to do with this. I was told the air bags and seatbelts may malfunction. The vehicle only has 85k miles. Its a 2012. At this point who will take the car as a trade? it's not safe and they don't have an answer except to say I'm [xxx] and I guess you need to get a new vehicle!! can you believe this? I have to get a whole new vehicle because they don't have a part! you can't make this stuff up. I spoke with BMW USA and was told they only honor 4yr and 50k miles and after 10years they are not responsible for parts to be made. The I was told to get it further diagnosed to the tune of 250. 00 so they can "maybe" have the parts manufactured. What the heck! this company is saying our cars are garbage after 10yrs! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

Anytime I have a passenger in the car the seatbelt warning light goes off. My passenger is wearing the seatbelt. I put the car in park and tell my passenger to take the seatbelt off then back on. It's off for a bit then the light for the seatbelt comes by on.

A red light came on in my vehicle that read restraint system. Does that mean the airbags are faulty or is it with the seatbelts.

I was driving approximately 30 mph. As I continued to accelerate the fuel system light came on and the car shut off in the road. I had to have it towed to the dealership as it would not start. Gas fumes could also be smelled coming from the car. Once looked at by BMW service center I was told “ ekps and the fuel pump are intermittently failing. I was able to able to verify the concern briefly. Vehicle may lose fuel pressure randomly. Upon removing rear seats and inspecting harness, I found the wires going into the ekps to be burnt. The wires from the ekps to the low pressure fuel pump will also need to be replaced. ” I did research and saw that this was recall on other years of this model. Also the middle back seatbelt does not work. Also even after multiple alignments my car still pulls aggressively to the right causing near collisions and off roaring.
Driver restraint malfunction warning light turned on while driving and stated dangerous driving conditions and to see a dealer immediately. The dealer diagnosis was a faulty airbag wire harness due to rubbing against the metal which caused the airbag light to malfunction. Car had 47500 miles but BMW did not cover this faulty wiring under warranty. Should be a recall on faulty wiring.
The car currently has 28,899 miles to date. Mid November 2023, the dashboard indicated that there was a default with the safety system. I took the car to the authorized service center and their diagnostics indicated as follows: faulty crash safety module. The recommendation was to replace and program acsm control unit. Since this was a matter of my personal safety I had to pay $2100 to fix it. The second issue was the sunroof not closing. The diagnostic found the following problems: excessive corrosion on sunroof cassette it to fail ( water entering the sunroof).
Unknown.
A portion on the airbag system was/is disabled due to an issue, known to BMW, with the wiring harness connected to the passenger seat. It is available for inspection if requested. Normal movement of the electric seat in turn pulls a wiring harness that failed by being "chaffed". This flaw results in a "restraint system error", passenger side - a significant problem since this harness controls an integral safety system of the vehicle and ultimately disables part of the airbag system until repaired. During inspection at the dealer's service center, the car was connected to a fault reader that reported a wiring harness/module failure due to "chaffing". This chaffing caused a short that triggered the warning light and deactivated a key air bag safety feature. I was told that normal movement of the passenger seat moves the wires and causes the system failure. After consulting with my service advisor, the repair was explained as "installation of a new, modified (longer) wiring harness that allows for rerouting of the wires so that the condition is corrected" what alarmed me as a consumer was when I asked if they were sure this would fix the problem, the dealer told me they see it quite often and 99% of the time it is a problem with the original design and routing of the harness. From my perspective, this indicates BMW acknowledges this is a known problem impacting the safe operation of the vehicle. The repair requires removal of the entire center console and replacing and rerouting a newly designed wiring harness. The estimate for repair to the consumer is almost $1300 - making it likely that many consumers would delay this important repair. In my opinion, this engineering flaw should be the subject of a voluntary recall at the least.
Vehicle airbag/seatbelt warning light on 9/2022. Airbag (seatbelt) module replaced. Caused by condensation or leak due to BMW not sealing cupholders and placing key safety equipment directly under unsealed cupholders. I was told other modules likely damaged but airbags and seatbelt were first to go out. 2023 April/may - steering issues. Windshield wipers run continuously and cannot be turned off. Horn and turn signal also stopped working. Need steering column replaced. BMW said possibly also related to cupholder defect. I am concerned the unsealed cupholders are going to kill someone if airbags deploy unnecessarily or seatbelt/airbags fail. BMW should have not placed key safety equipment under unsealed drink holders.
Passenger seat restraint system.
Restraint system notification message: fault in airbag, belt tensioner or belt force limiter. Service center advised air bag might not deploy if not fixed. This could result in death or injury during a car accident. They provided an estimate with the description of cabling correction and the service advisor also told it has to do with a resistor and low voltage in the unit. This notification message first appeared when the car was under the warranty and they fixed it but then it happens again, showing that this is a recurring problem of this unit.
When the vehicle is exposed to heat, the seat belt does not buckle. The release button stays jammed and the seat belt does not fully secure. The light goes off but the seat belt will release with some tension. It only happens when the car is hot. It could seriously put people at risk if it is not addressed.
I recently acquired a 2019 BMW X5. When I requested seat belt extenders as your web site suggests, "if you need a roomier belt, contact your vehicle manufacturer to obtain seat belt extenders. " my dealer told me that they "cannot get them. " I contacted BMW corporate customer services and while the gentleman I have been dealing with is trying and is very courteous, he can't seem to find any information. I regularly transport two people who cannot use the seatbelt and I am concerned for their safety.
Driving my vehicle and on my screen popped up driver seat restraint malfunction, also rear seat restraint malfunction please go to closest dealership. I bring my vehicle to BMW dealership in my town and rep calls me and advise that the cup holders sit above the srs wiring and that liquid gets thru the cup holders and dripped on to the wires causing them to no longer work. This is a design flaw I have never spilled a drink in my cup holder and even if someone did on accident why is the airbag wires not covered in plastic if going below cup holders that leak any type of liquid. I am unable to afford, I do have warranty however BMW stating that this is an outside interferance and will not be covered under warranty, so I am having to drive with no airbags. I researched and many others are having same issue with this same year and make different models. This is something that definatly needs to be recalled as it is a design flaw and a safety hazard.
Purchased the car Feb 2020. Over 6 months ago, back seat belts (middle and left side) stopped working. Seat belt will not click. Brand new car with nonfunctioning seat belts. Been trying to get hold of the dealer to fix and did not get anywhere. After months of hassle, they ordered the seat belts to be replaced. After dropping off the car, I get an email asking me to approve the fix for a cost of $1,100. Want to report malfunctioning unsafe car with nonworking seat belts (brand new car, a little over 1 year old) and a dealer that want to charge me for their malfunctioning seat belts. Anyone that get in the car in the back is not safe. Cannot use the car due to safety issues.
After the passenger would vacate the car the passenger seat belt alarm would come on and stay on till I would take action by hitting the seat with my palm. I tried three times in having the dealership to repair the seat pad sensor while it was under warranty, but they said they could not duplicate it. After the warrant expired I returned it the dealership and then they said it was a defective seat pad sensor. (ugh).

Spurious "passenger not wearing seatbelt" alert when there is no passenger. Diagnosed as "passenger seat mat sensor faulty" with a replacement cost of $2,498. 87. Should be covered by a recall as this is a safety issue. Apparently similar issue led to a recall in older BMW vehicles.
Passenger seat sensor for airbag has failed. Was told not covered under warranty or any recall, estimate of $2,200. Was told that safety system is now compromised for passenger.
Passenger seat - seat/airbag occupancy sensor failed. The airbag and seatbelt light remains lit. BMW said not covered under any warranty even though it's a safety issue. Estimated cost to repair - $3,000. Apparently airbag and seatbelt will not engage if sensor is not working.
Front passwnger seat belt doesn't work properly.

The passenger seat weight occupancy sensor intermittently works. I am concerned if it is not working properly, the airbag may not deploy properly. Also, the seat belt warning light chimes even though the seat is not occupied.
Seat occupancy sensor broken and this seems to be an ongoing problem of BMW.
Three warning messages appear (I hve to click "ok" to remove them) each time I start the car. The message is about the airbag, the belt tensioner, and the belt force limiter. This for the both the driver side and passenger side. I can still drive the car, but notice through expeimentation, that sometimes when I give a rapid tug on the shoulder belt it stops after a few inches (as it should) and sometimes it goes forward a couple of feet without any reistance. I have not done any other experimentation. This is true for the vehicle being stationary and in motion. Since the dealer wants $185 just to look (I am a few months out of warranty), I would first like to know if other people are having the same issue and their is the realistic possiblity of a recall. This would save me analysis and subsequent repair expenses.
Bww has an ongoing problem with its seat sensor mat. These sensors are critical to the safety of the front passenger in the event of an accident. BMW has only issued recalls for select model of its vehicle on this particular issue. It has failed to acknowledge that it is a widespread problem affecting all of its vehicles across years and models. I believe that the government should act to force BMW to take responsibility for its defective product. Human lives are being put in danger. Thank you.

Front passenger seat mat sensor faulty leaving the front passenger without airbag protection. I'll install a bypass device because they are common and inexpensive and available because so many Bmws have this issue. The bypass device will allow the passenger airbags to deploy whether a passenger is in the seat or not. The years 2006 and 2007 saw recall on the passenger seat sensor. This needs to be addressed.

Takata recall. Airbag front passenger and restraint seat belt, don't want anything happening when I'm driving it might cause a accident.
Takata recall! my airbag seat keep on ringing to put seatbelt on when no one is sitting there, and the restraint warning on my tv screen won't go away. I'm afraid my seat will explode on us when we are on the road. They need to check it out, dangerous its better to save lives, then sorry.
