Front Seat Recliner Problems of BMW Z3

BMW Z3 owners have reported 2 problems related to front seat recliner (under the seats category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Front Seat Recliner problem of the 1997 BMW Z3

Failure Date: 06/01/1999

Both driver and passenger seats move and shift out of place during normal operation at any speed all of the time. Reported to dealer for correction under warranty and was advised this was a normal condition for the seat to move when applying brakes at any speed. I consider this a safety hazard because the seat movement could result in deficient application of brake pressure on the pedal during braking conditions. Please advise if this is considered by NHTSA as normal operating condition.

2 Front Seat Recliner problem of the 1996 BMW Z3

Dealer representative said this a common problem & requires replacement. When braking, the seat slides forward on the rails 1 to 2 inches. I am concerned that in a serious front end collision the seat may propel the driver and/or passenger forward and with a locked belt cause personal injuries to the occupants. Dealer was not willing to replace this defective part at their expense.
