1 Service Brakes problem of the 2018 Buick Encore

Failure Date: 05/05/2025

While driving, my car began to glitch out. The screens started turning on and off, the doors began locking and unlocking, and I lost my ability to steer, brake, and accelerate. It caused me to run a red light and I almost got into a severe accident. This issue has occurred several times, and during more recent occasions the car has turned off completely while driving. There were no warning lights or messages indicating that something was wrong with the car, but sometimes when I turn the car back on, it says “calibrating. ” if Buick has sold cars that are capable of losing complete control, this should be investigated immediately.

4 Service Brakes problem of the 2018 Buick Encore

Failure Date: 03/01/2024

Have been experiencing brake malfunction on my 2018 Buick Encore with the brakes getting locked while driving. There were instances where the brakes would lock randomly and the vehicle would start slowing down during driving even with a foot on the gas pedal and I had to turn on the hazards lights to pull the vehicle on the side in order to avoid being rear ended. Took the vehicle to a gm dealership and initial diagnostics mentioned that the brake pedal position sensor was malfunctioning and would need a replacement. Agreed to replace that, but after this repair dealership claimed that there was a loose pivot in the brake pedal assembly causing the brake light to be on(did not have this issue before taking the vehicle to dealership). Since the vehicle was not in a driving condition due to the brake light being "on" all the time, as per the dealership suggestion I agreed to replacing the entire brake pedal assembly as well. However, the original issue was not resolved and the dealership is now recommending that replacing the master brake cylinder and brake booster might resolve the issue. The dealership has also mentioned that all these recommended repairs are from gm and my vehicle is still at the dealership.

5 Service Brakes problem of the 2020 Buick Encore

Failure Date: 11/13/2023

I currently own a 2020 Buick Encore since new with only 18,389 miles on it. Recently, I noticed on the Buick Encore that it lacked stopping power. Upon checking the air in the tires for winter I noticed that the rear brake rotors were severely rusted. And then I decided to further inspect the rotor surfaces. I removed the left rear tire and noticed that the back side surface was severely corroded therefore inhibiting the brake pad to stop with it. I remove the right rear tire and found the same condition! as I am retired, and still a ase and michigan master mechanic (ase-2298-2747) I know this condition is abnormal for a vehicle with such low miles even in michigan. This is my wife’s vehicle, and she noticed that the stopping distance was severely decreased over the months. With driving is treacherous as it is today she needs all the stopping distance that she can get. With the way the rotors were rusted, the rear brakes had no stopping power, and the fronts were minimal at best for surface for the pads to stop with. I checked the front and found the same thing on the inner surfaces of both front rotors. I decided it was time that I replace all the rotors and the pads as the surfaces of all rotors were beyond the point of turning them. I would never expect this to occur on a vehicle with such low mileage. I replaced the rotors and pads with all ac delco components as I have faith in the design changes that are usually made to products in the same product family. For the rotors, I made sure that they were plated to stop any rust from occurring on the non-stopping surfaces. If anyone were to google this vehicle, or it’s cousin the trax, you can see there are replacements either with coding or different material that prevents corrosion. I am glad I caught this in time as my wife’s safety was in jeopardy. One can see there is a fix for this issue, but the manufacture neglected to take any action to correct it.

6 Service Brakes problem of the 2019 Buick Encore

Failure Date: 08/20/2023

When I apply brakes the car accelerates instead of stopping. This occurs randomly and not all the time. It has occurred at traffic lights or when I am at a location to park the SUV. I was in a accident in may which caused damages to another car. I reported this to gm back in may of this year and they stated that they sent a engineer to inspect the car and could not find anything wrong. At that time the car had been towed to the dealership. I went and picked the car up it drove fine for a while and now its back doing the same thing again. It will run thru red lights, stop signs and doesn't stop when I pull into parking spaces, this is very dangerous, I am getting the run around with general motors. I need some one's help before someone gets injured or killed with this vehicle. I hope its not me.

7 Service Brakes problem of the 2018 Buick Encore

Failure Date: 08/04/2023

When driving, the vehicle will stutter and make the car feel as though it’s bubbling, once you come to a stop, the vehicle will shut off. This is a huge safety concern considering I have children and if the vehicle just turns off and I shouldn’t be braked for a while I can get hit. I have almost been hit 4x since this has started because the car shuts off when attempting to brake or braking completely. After speaking to multiple mechanics over this car it seems to be a common issue for it.

The over drive light was flashing both on the right under radio and on the dash. The rpms started racing as well one time for sure. I waited a few minutes turned it back on and drove around a parking lot before I ventured home. The second time I was close to home and drove it home 10 miles an hour. Since then I am extremely scared to drive my car. Being a nurse I need my car. I took it to sterling Buick in venice. They ran a diagnostic test and it showed nothing. They drove it and of course it did not do it. There suggestion was for me to trade it in. They charged me and sent me on my way. They fixed something with my ac. 17 Service Brakes problem of the 2015 Buick Encore

Failure Date: 04/07/2020

I had purchased a 2015 Buick Encore vehicle on March 03, 2020, that had a "not for sale" yellow sticker on the windshield. I had notice that the vehicle made a thumping sound under the hood on the driver side when riding on the highway. I took it to johnny londoff service dept. , but was told that nothing was wrong with it. In addition, to noticing that the vehicle would roll backwards on the smallest of incline. As time went on the vehicle would roll back, then roll forward on leveled grounds when I would take my foot off of the brake pedal. I took the vehicle back to johnny londoff service dept. , and again was told that nothing was wrong with the vehicle. I took it to telle tires and auto center and found that the suspension was worn out on the front and back of the vehicle, with struts and spark plugs needed. This vehicle rolls back when sitting at a traffic light, at, in line at a fast food drive through, and just everyday driving. Johnny londoff should have fixed the damages and/or repairs needed before selling me the vehicle. I would not recommend buying a vehicle or doing business with them.

When it rains most if the time the vehicle onstar sets off alerts for my antilock brakes and stability to be checked. Dealer said it is normal and not concerning but checked at the 1 year inspection for me. Npf. A month later a rainy day, alerts, and the vehicle wouldn't start. All the lights came on, press brake to start appeared but pressing break did not start it. After an hour of trying various tricks it started with the remote starter. A week later same thing. Rain, alerts, and no start. This time 2 hours of trying various tricks- (emergency break on off/ park pushed all the way up, wheels forward, remote start attempts, onstar diagnostics etc) I had to have it towed. The mechanic from aaa tried and nothing, we towed an hour back to dealership and he tried once more, nothing. Next morning the dealership reported npf. I am picking it up tomorrow but expect to report this happening again soon.

21 Service Brakes problem of the 2018 Buick Encore

Failure Date: 10/07/2019

This took place on private property in the parking lot of a commercial building. The vehicle was in motion going forward. It was decelerating head-in into a parking spot. The braking action was engaged. The vehicle had slowed to about 5 mph. My right foot was on the brake pedal and the braking was engaged. I then heard the sound of the engine revving at a very high rate. There was a high whining sound. I lost braking as my right foot depressed the pedal all the way to the floor. The car suddenly accelerated forward at an increased speed. It jumped the sidewalk curb, crossed the concrete sidewalk, and slammed into a cinder block wall column on the side of a building. The vehicle felt like it experienced sudden unintended acceleration.

24 Service Brakes problem of the 2015 Buick Encore

Failure Date: 07/11/2019

On Wednesday, July 10, 2019 I slid onto a shoulder taking a turn and punctured my rear passenger side tire. I replaced the tire with the spare, drove to work (less than 10 miles) at speeds below 50 mph, then drove home and scheduled to have the tires replaced the following morning. On Thursday, July 11, 2019, I backed out of my parking spot at my home and started going down my very steep mountain driveway. I applied the brakes like I always do (my foot is always on the brake pedal going down) and received no response. The pedal felt normal (not soft), but the brakes did not engage. By that time my car was going very fast (because of the very steep slope), and I was struggling to keep it on the road, while trying not to hit another car passing by my driveway and not to fly across the two-lane road into a creek. I could not spare a hand for the emergency brake. I had to take a very sharp right turn from my driveway to slow down the vehicle. I didn't hit the other car or end up in the creek but I clipped my passenger side mirror and one of the passenger side panels. Once down and on even ground, I was finally able to use the emergency brake and stop the car. After a brief pause, I started moving again, and regular brakes worked normally. Two subsequent brake system checks (one at the tire shop one at a gm dealership) showed no issues. I was told there are no bulletins or recalls for anything like it. I looked on Buick and gm forums and found at least two reports of a similar problem - brakes suddenly not working and then resuming function again. There are two complaints on this site describing similar issue - id # 11100704 and 11083404. Fixing the mirror alone would cost $900 according to the gm dealership, however, I am not seeing anything regarding gm investigating the issue closely.

When first starting out, the brakes stop short. I have to brake 3 times somewhere safe in order to not stop short in front of another vehicle by accident. I had them inspected and the service center said they were fine, that's just the way they are. I feel this is a safety hazard because it stops short, whether I want to or not. It happens whether it is raining or not, but especially during rain.

The dealer said that there was a big hole in the engine. After they repair it no more than two weeks later I was going down a road where the car just turned off and it did not even let me move out of the road way. And now 3 weeks ago I was going down a street going 45 mph when the person in front of me stopped all of a sudden and I hit my brake so hard but they had not responded which led me to crash in front of the person in front of me. Luckily neither of us were injured but now for sure I know I do not feel safe driving any of general motors cars whether is be Buick or GMC.

31 Service Brakes problem of the 2015 Buick Encore

Failure Date: 03/06/2018

The car had been parked in an unheated garage for more than 24 hours. I started it, put my foot on the brake pedal, and put it in gear (r). The car lunged back at a high rate of speed. My foot was still on the brake. To avoid hitting a vehicle behind it in the driveway, I shifted to drive (d) and the car immediately started forward still at a high rate of speed. The brakes did not slow the car down. I bumped the front wall of the garage and again shifted into r. The car started moving back again and the brakes did not work. I turned the engine off and the car began slowing and came to a stop after bumping the vehicle about 20 feet behind it. My foot was on the brake pedal the whole time. I checked for obstructions around the brake pedal and found none. Afterward, when I started the car again, it drove normally without trouble. There was no apparent damage to the car as a result of either collision but the garage wall suffered some minor damage.
