15 problems related to brake electric antilock have been reported for the 1997 Chevrolet 1500. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Abs brakes are pulsing at low speeds and will not stop quickly.
Abs brake system activates under 10 miles an hour. Gm has a recall for this abs problem, however they only go back as far as 1999. This is a safety issue and since I have the same problem, I should be included in the recall. The complaint is not against the dealer.
Driver's side front tire stopped turning. Consumer complained about brake problems. Dealer could not duplicate the problem , and no defects were found. The consumer stated that after the dealer could not find the problem he disconnected the anti lock system and the problem never happened again.
No crash or damage or injury. Just abs on a 1997 tahoe that have never worked properly. They engage at low speed braking, the vehicle slides and when they engage you can hear what sounds like a big spring engaging, weird sound. We had never driven a vehicle with abs so didn't know it was abnormal sounding and feeling but didn't like it and felt uncomfortable. I kept talking to people and they suggested I check out service notices/recalls. Was glad to see a similar situation with the 1999 to 2002 but of course that doesn't cover my 1997.
While driving less than 10mph anti-lock brake system begins to "pulsate" as if vehicle is going through a skid.
Abs brakes system engages at low speeds making it difficult to stop the vehicle. This was an ongoing problem that started in 2001 when I lived on east coast. It has been repaired but at my expense. The recall that is being issued should include vehicles in a broader range than only 1999-2002 as this 1997 has the same problem as the newer vehicles.
Abs brake problem: when applying the brakes under normal braking condtions the abs kicks, which makes the truck travel an additional 20 feet before stopping. This happens while traveling on a dry/ smooth road surface. Truck has been serviced 5 or 6 times for brake problems. Consumer still continues to experience brake problems.
Brakes: driving approximately 20mph and applied the brakes, attempting to stop, brake pedal went completely to the floor and the vehicle did not slow down. Ran into the rear of van ahead, which was the only thing that stopped the truck.
While driving under normal conditions & coming to a stop light brakes locked up. Consumer was unable to move car again. Had to get it towed. Consumer did not contact dealer.
There have been several close calls when the steering and brakes have gone out. We tow a 2000 pound trailer and we are worried this will happen while we are towing help what can we do?.
Ea94-038, the defective braking system malfunctioned intermittently which caused a minor accident in dry pavement without warning.
Vehicle is going on its 5th set of brakes, approximately lasting about 10,000 miles. Manufacturer has new redesigned set of brakes for new vehicles, but not for previous years.
Brakes surging with irregular brake pedal pressure. It also felt like front brakes were shimming when applied. Dealer turned front brake rotors, and explaine dit was a design flaw.
The abs brake system would release after touching the pedal, would go into a extended stopping distance when brakes applied. Abs system kicks in too fast. Dealer cannot duplicate the problem. Brakes have been repaired 8-10 times.
When applying the abs brakes on dry pavement the pedal traveled to the floor, causing extended stopping distance, cause unknown. Please give any further details.
