I am writing regarding the very poor brake life and performance failure on my 2002 Chevrolet pickup, 1500 series purchased new from a local dealer. At 19,500 miles the brakes were diagnosed (on 1-15-09) by the dealer as needing complete overhaul, a cost of $571. 00. The problem was noticeable at 12,000 miles by excessive pedal travel, the same with the emergency brake. No action was taken or notice of brake wear indicated by the dealer when notified. By 17,000 miles the brakes were noisy and when informed the dealer said my rear rotors were rusty from low use and I should consider a replacement. Unable to believe my brakes were worn out ( I'm 65 years old and have never had a vehicles' brakes wear out any where near this mileage) I decided to drive it more often to remove the rust. During this time my teenage daughter, with me as a passenger, nearly hit a semi unexpectedly blocking our lane, because the brakes worked very poorly. This was in the fall of 08. In November and December 08, I wrote to the dealer requesting cost sharing for brake repair. No response. . Then, in late December I wrote to gm , customer affairs, in detroit,mi. Requesting cost sharing due to premature wearout. They requested the cost estimate on 1-15-09 and then refused or denied any assistance based on "low use". I am well aware of a broad problem with early brake wear on 2001 to 2004 (admitted by service reps at the dealer) light duty gm trucks, mostly due to rusty rotors, especially on the rears. This is further evidenced by the dealer estimate which showed expensive replacement
"ceramic" pads, which were not original equipment. The dealer also admitted that at one time they tried to add a "kit" to shield the rear rotors from salt spray. These are all evidence of defective parts, something that should be covered by warranty regardless of the vehicles age or frequency of use. Or covered by a recall. Your website shows thousands of complaints on this item. Please add mine.

The parking brake is worn off. It did not pass the state inspection and now it will cost me about $350 dollars to get something fix that gm should recall. Not being able to use the parking brake could of being very dangerous to my family in case needed. Thank god this did not happen. Please report this to gm and have them do something. Thanks.

Parking brake failure. Gm put out recall for manual transmission vehicles but not auto trans. Truck would not pass state inspection. Took to dealer and paid to have it fixed.
Parking brake failure on 2001 Chevrolet 1500 series pickup. Consumer reports magazine published a safety alert for this same problem stating that 1999-2005 models are at danger because of friction that could make the parking brake ineffective. Our understanding is a recall has been issued for the manual transmissions, but not for the automatic transmissions which is what we have. We took one of the trucks from our business fleet (comprised of 15-20 Chevrolet 1500 series pickup trucks) to be inspected today and it failed because of this parking brake failure. There was another gentleman at the inspection place with a Chevrolet 1500 truck while we were there, and his truck failed for the parking brake also. We contacted moritz Chevrolet, a local dealership, and they stated that they see large #s of vehicles come in for this same problem. The auto inspection establishment said they same thing - they fail countless numbers of 1999-2005 Chevrolet 1500 pickup trucks for parking brake failure. It is going to cost us $200 to have this repaired. Chevrolet clearly knows that there is a problem, and a recall needs to be issued at once. This is a safety hazard.
Parking brake is not holding and we have used it maybe 2 or 3 times. Abs and brake lights stay on all the time. We have a 2001 Chevrolet silverado 1500. I have seen many complaints about this on the iternet. Can you not do something about these complaints.
Emergency brake stopped working on my 2002 Chevrolet tahoe after 34,757 miles. A properly working emergency brake is critical, as my three small children ride in and play around this vehicle.
When getting my 2000 chevy truck inspected, it failed due to the parking brake not holding. Curious I went to several inspection station and asked for an inspection. The four shops I approached all asked if I had my parking brake fixed before they would inspect it. When speaking to a moritz chevy (in ft. Worth, TX) dealership, I was told that if you don't use the parking brake it will shift and not work. And worse they said it could rub the other rotors and eventually need replacing. All this from something that is never used in the car. Should I have the air bag inspected since I never use it? how many people have been hurt or worse?
everyone apparently knows there is something wrong with the parking brake except for chevy. Why is that? how many people have to die before they will listen?.

Parking brakes on a 2001 Chevrolet silverado. I have 42000 miles and this is the second time the parking brakes wore out prematurally. Have never been abused and use normally. The first time around at 21000 miles. Parking brakes linning are worn beyond recommended thickness and cannot hold the vehicle. First time I replaced the linnings and will again have to place the linings. Never told about premature lining failure when I purchased the first set. I don't belive parking brake lining should wear out at 20000 miles.
Chevrolet has a defective clip that is on thier emergency brake system and they know this but are not doing a recall to try and solve this problem. There is a technical service bulletin out on this problem but they still are not accepting fault and are making the consumer pay for thier mistake. After repeated phone calls to them I did get them to agree to pay for half of the fix on my 1/2 ton pick-up. My question is why is nothing being done about this problem? it is not so much the money I had to put out of pocket but the fact they know there is a problem on all of thier trucks made after 1999.
Emergency (parking) brakes has never worked on my vehicle. When new I noted that it would go completely to the floor when engaged but assumed that it was simply different than past emergency brakes. However, I discovered long ago that, when engaged on a hill it simply had no effect! given that I have an automatic transmission I do not bother to engage it but, if ever needed in an emergency situation it would be completely useless. It is clearly a faulty design. Chevrolet should have done something about it for all owners, not just those with manual transmissions. .
My 2001 Chevrolet c1500 silverado is two years old and due it's first state inspection. The truck would not pass because the emergency brake would not stop the truck, even sitting still at idle. The emergency brake has never been used, but both emergency brake shoes were worn out and one rotor/drum was ruined.
Parking brake does not hold. About a year to 18 months after the vehicles (2001 z71 cheverlet and 2002 surbuban) the park brake fails to hold. As time went on, the parking brake pedel needed to be depressed lower and lower until the brake would no longer hold the vehicle.
