Chevrolet 1500 owners have reported 18 problems related to suspension (under the suspension category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Typical gm product, rear bumper rust out, brake likes rusted completely out, rear cross members, fuel tank cross member has rusted out completely on passenger side where the shock mounts to and the same for the rear crommm member where the shock mounts to on the driver side. I mean the fuel tan cross member holds the tank in place and if that tank dropps then I'd assume that it would be a safety issue. Atleast I hope so.

I have a 1999 silverado 1500, in the past few day I've been hearing a noise coming from the drivers rear wheel area. Today I put the rear of the truck on jack stands in order to locate the noise, after removing the wheel and tire I noticed the frame behind the tire has holes rusted through and is paper thin. Then I noticed a plate welded to the outside of the frame apparently by the previous owner behind the plate the frame has been broke . I then checked the other side and it too has a plate but doesn't look as bad. Now, growing more interested I began poking at the frame walls and in many places its chipping and going through like ice. I am not a rich man and cannot afford to repair or replace something that should last like you would think a frame should. A few years ago I had a 1979 chevy truck and sold it, even now the frame is in much better shape than a truck that is 20 years newer. Gm needs to be the honorable company that I have always thought they were and fix this problem.

I brought my 2001 chevy silverado in for it's annual inspection, I was told that the truck did not pass inspection as the frame was all rusted out, the rest of the truck looks like it is only a few years old and other than the rear bumper, it doesn't have any rust on it, as I have take well care of it since I purchased it new; a few years back, I needed to get all the break sensors replaced, had to replace all the break lines, and replace 2 of the brake rotors and disk, due to rust. When I checked around for a new frame, I was told that this is very common for gm trucks built around 2001. I cannot afford to buy a new truck or pay the approx. $7,000 cost of putting a new frame under my truck. I think that due to all the problems with this particular model year, gm should issue a recall to replace the frames, and reimburse.

I took my 1999 chevy silverado 1500 in for service at a local repair facility who, upon attempting to lift the vehicle on a hoist, informed me that the vehicle shifted due to the frame being rusted through on both the left and right side of the vehicle. They lowered the vehicle and drove it onto another service area with a pit allowing the vehicle to be inspected from underneath without the use of a hoist. The service repair technician showed me the significant rust damage to the frame and advised me not to sink any money into repairs due to the fact the vehicle structure could fail at any time due to frame breakage. I was told by a former engineer at gm that the frames were sourced to magna corporation and that brand new vehicles were exhibiting frame bending when being loaded and clamped down on delivery truck trailers. The supplier must have compromised the materials and processing of the truck frames in order to obtain the contract from gm. This appears to be a significant safety problem due to negligence of both gm and the supplier of the truck frames. I also had experienced brake failure in 2011 due to the brake lines rusting from the outside, which would also indicate compromised materials and processing. I noticed many other complaints reported to the NHTSA on this site about brake line failure due to external rust for 1999 chevy silverado trucks just like mine. I am afraid that many of those vehicle owners have not yet noticed that they will also have truck frame failure due to the significant rust problem exhibited by these vehicles. It is only a matter of time before these structural component and brake line failures will result in many vehicle crashes and the unsuspecting vehicle owners have no idea that this will inevitably happen unless the NHTSA steps in and forces an investigation and recall of 1999 through 2006 chevy silverado vehicles.
Right side spring shackle failed due to excessive corrosion right side of rear bumper corroded to the point the mount failed.
I removed bed off my truck to replace fuel pump and noticed sections of my rear frame missing or just paper thin due to rot/corrosion and it is unsafe to drive. It's sad I've owned this truck for 8years and take very good care of it it still has all of its original body panels in rust/rot free and floors are mint just the frame is junk.

I currently own a 2004 Chevrolet silverado 1500 series. Over the past month there has been a vibration in the truck. It does not vibrate all the time, but when it does it is very noticeable. It usually vibrates at speeds from 45 mph to 70 mph. I had replaced the original tires about three weeks ago and that did not help. I've had it in the dealership three times in the past three weeks. They replaced a rear u-joint, which did not help. The last time it was in they told me that they can not find what is wrong with it so it has to be my new tires. (my truck had this vibration before I put new tires on it and I told the dealership this. ) the dealership also put over 400 pounds of weight in the bed of the truck and that did not make a difference in anything. I've also had other numerous problems with this truck. Brakes, transmission, steering arm. I believe that this truck is very unsafe. Wanted to file a claim hopefully to avoid more serious problems. Have contacted legal advise referencing the lemon law.
There has always been a knocking noise, that can be felt in the steering and brake pedal. The dealer replaced a shaft that connected to the steering sector. The fix corrected it for a while. The problem came back. I went back to the dealer and was told the part needed to be removed and greased every 15000 miles. I said ,why does it not have grease fittings? over the last 10 years I have talked to numerous people who have the same problem. I sent gm an e-mail about this problem, never got an answer. I do get letters from gm wanting me trade for a new one. Why pay $40 to $50 thousand for a vehicle that the manufacturer wont stand behind? thanks richard avery.
Wheels cannot be aligned due to the washer which is welded on. Replaced tires less than one year from purchase, vehicle pulls to the right.
While driving at 65mph or above the steering wheel has a very hard vibration which may cause a loss of vehicle control and crash. Manufacturer has a TSB bulletin 99-43-09-002 stated that it wasa manufacturer's design . Please provide further information.
While driving at 40 mph there is some noise within the steering. Also, when going over a bump, there is a loud noise, and the tires are out of balance. Also, wheel is bend. Dealer has been notified.
While driving vehicle on any speed, vehicle vibrates, and consumer loses control, almost getting off the road.
Alignment problem ruined left front tire. The sidewalls were cracking on all the tires. Dealer said the tires were not suitable for the weight of the van. There should be a standard for replacement part.
While driving 45-65 mph extreme vibration occurs, dealer has replaced the shocks and tires which has not corrected the problem. Please give any further details.
While vehicle is being driven at any rate of speed vehicle severely pulls to right. Driver continously has to keep steering wheel to left for vehicle to go straight, cause unknown. Dealer cannot identify the cause. Please give any further details.
On cement roads, and driving between 50-70 mph ,a shimmy will occur in the steering wheel which could cause a loss of vehicle control.
