2 Suspension problem of the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 04/16/2026

While driving at a low speed (approx. 5–10 mph), the front passenger-side lower ball joint suffered a catastrophic structural shear without warning. This caused the wheel assembly to collapse outward and the cv axle to pull out of the transmission. The failure caused a complete loss of steering control, veering the vehicle into a curb. Physical evidence (outward axle pull and high-side rim scratches) indicates the mechanical failure preceded the impact. This occurred at only 38,155 miles on a 2022 Chevrolet Bolt Ev. Outward dislocation: photos show the cv axle pulled out of the transmission and the wheel leaning out (positive camber). A curb impact would push these components in. This proves the wheel fell away from the car first. Pre-impact grinding: the interior barrel of the rim and the brake dust shield show heavy rotational grinding and metal-on-metal scoring. This confirms the suspension collapsed while the wheel was still spinning at speed, prior to the car coming to a stop. Structural shear: the lower ball joint stud suffered a complete transverse shear. High-resolution photos of the broken stud face show distinct "beach marks" (concentric rings), which are the physical fingerprint of a slow-growing metal fatigue crack rather than a sudden impact fracture. Rim damage profile: deep gouges are located on the flat face of the wheel spokes rather than the outer lip. This confirms the wheel was already at an extreme tilt (collapsed) when it made contact with the curb. Conclusion: the vehicle was maintained and driven under normal conditions. This was a spontaneous, catastrophic structural failure of a safety-critical component. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this as a potential manufacturing defect for the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt Ev.

6 Suspension problem of the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 01/23/2025

I just purchased this vehicle from hertz authorized dealer in December 2024, January 2025 the electrical system, infotainment became non functioning. This caused my vehicle to stall, on star safety charge, etc to fail and not function. No communication within the vehicle that is an electric vehicle that requires this system for all components to function and provide a safe car to drive. Power to vehicle, back up camera, on star for emergencies, charging, this affects all the adas components in this vehicle to function properly causing a safety hazard. Took this vehicle into the dealer they diagnosed this system is down and no communication with radio. Also set false dtc was completed. It is scary that a radio component can cause an emergency service to fail and other components in the vehicle to fail all electrical components in this vehicle. I am writing a complaint to hertz since they stated all was okay when the radio, on star never worked, an update for the main system was no corrected and they failed to make sure the ev batteries were properly connected.

7 Suspension problem of the 2018 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 10/10/2024

The steering gear went out at 45k miles and I just got the car recently. The steering stays stuck when I turn it and it takes turns very sharply. In snow or rainy conditions, this might be fatal. I checked out a couple of forums online regarding this issue and seems like a lot of people have also encountered it. It’s a $4000 fix when I took it Chevrolet. This should be something Chevrolet recalls, not for us to fix as it could end up in a lot of injuries or ever death.

8 Suspension problem of the 2020 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 07/01/2024

Steering sticks and does not return to center in sweeping turns. Clicking noise over bumps in very cold weather (may or may not be related--steering issue most concerning). Most prominent at higher speeds (for example, getting off of the highway) but occurs at any speed. Once you turn the wheel, it will return slightly then stick in place. It takes a small amount of extra force to correct it back towards center. During these occurrences it may continue to stick or may begin to act normally after the "correction. " I would be alright with providing the vehicle for inspection and/or demonstration if requested. The first time this happened, I was driving along twisting roads in northern michigan. The occurrence caught me off guard, and I traveled over the lines. Personally, I was not in danger but if there was no shoulder or more traffic I feel this issue has the chance at being very dangerous. I am now aware of the issue and can keep it in mind while driving, but I've also noticed recently that the small "jutt" from correcting the wheel could cause an issue on snow and ice. I have not had a dealership look at the vehicle, as it seems to be a very common complaint about the chevy bolt, with a new part number being sold for replacement steering racks. I am willing to have it confirmed if needbe. There are no warnings of this occurrence. If the conditions are right, there is a very high chance it occurs. It started roughly around the 60,000 mile mark, and has been getting slightly worse over the past year. My vehicle is now at 98,000 miles.

10 Suspension problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 01/01/2022

Steering not returning to center, when making a turn across the street you have to quickly center the vehicle to prevent going into on coming traffic. Very stiff to turn and make popping sounds when turning.

11 Suspension problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 11/19/2021

Creaking/popping noise from passenger rear side of vehicle at 24,574 miles along with a grinding noise coming from the front driver side wheel. Took to dealership twice and was told there is not a rear axle just independent struts and shocks. Very concerning and not sure if a wheel is gonna fall off. I've seen other forums that have been having the same issue between the years 2017-2019. Please recall and fix because consumers shouldn't shell out more money for cheap parts.

12 Suspension problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 07/05/2021

Steering wheel does not return easily to stationary position after being turned. As a result, wheel must be manually turned in order to straighten steering. This can be particularly cumbersome when in a deep curve or while maneuvering around parking lots, u-turn, etc.

14 Suspension problem of the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 03/23/2021

The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Bolt Ev. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, she was unable to keep the vehicle centered, and the vehicle was pulling either to the left or the right. After restarting the vehicle, the vehicle seemed to return to normal functionality; however, the failure had since become a persistent failure. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that a front alignment was required. The vehicle received the front wheel alignment, but the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer two additional times, but a cause for the failure was not determined; but the vehicle received a second alignment. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed a failure with the rear axle. The rear axle was replaced, but the failure continued. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and agreed to buy back the vehicle. The failure mileage was 691.

15 Suspension problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 11/09/2020

Sway bar components and steering making noises and excessive movement. These issues were noticeable just after 3yr 36k limited warranty had expired (approx 23k miles on vehicle). Items later found to be faulty by dealership, gm gave significant pushback and offered limited assistance with repairs and claims the treat items on case by case basis. I have read multiple reports of these repairs being performed under warranty and with a few customers out of warranty with similar symptoms. It’s time to investigate sway bar and steering turn signal switch and related component issues in Bolt Ev 2017-19, possibly later and require gm to issue a recall.
