1 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 01/11/2026

I was driving on the highway above 60 mph, and I suddenly got a "propulsion power reduced" alert, along with a yellow indicator light. I almost immediately thereafter got a message saying "speed reduced to 50 mph" and then "speed reduced to 30 mph. " I got no acceleration when I depressed the accelerator pedal. In fact, it felt like the car had engaged the regenerative braking to actively slow me down. This is a life-threatening safety flaw, as it was difficult to get to the breakdown lane. The only reason there was no collision was that there was relatively light traffic. I managed to get to a breakdown lane and then, after restarting the car, to get off the highway and into a parking lot, where I called for a tow. The car was towed to the dealer I bought it from and, the next day, they inspected the car and determined that the auxiliary transmission fluid pump had failed and needed to be replaced. I've seen many reports on reddit that this part fails on chevy bolts. What makes this truly unsafe is that there was no warning whatsoever that something was wrong. Everything seemed fine (after I got a new battery under the big bolt battery recall) until the car suddenly cut power and slowed me down in the middle of the highway. This car needs to be recalled again.

2 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 12/22/2025

Vehicle started to surge while driving (both small acceleration forward and large deceleration) without any change in brake or accelerator position. Eventually a "propulsion power reduced" message was presented on the console followed immediately by no forward propulsion (accelerator completely unresponsive) and forced to coast to a stop on the side of the highway. Car refused to shift out of park or neutral following breakdown. Car taken to dealer to troubleshoot and was told that a p0a3f code was present and that the engine harness needed to be replaced in accordance with NHTSA bulletin 19-na-220. This bulletin calls out that the harness was likely damaged during initial install at factory and the dealer representative confirmed that the pins were damaged as described. Car was given back to drive home after harness was checked (owner decided to explore options before scheduling repair), but broke down due to surging and complete loss of power within 2 miles of dealer. Troubleshooting to confirm harness damage is suspected to have worsen the condition and made un-commanded accel/deceleration followed by complete loss of power likely. Uncertain why this condition would be exempt from recall if oem is aware of installation issues at factory. Driving with this condition was as bad or worse than other type model loss of power conditions that have been recalled. Recommend at least clarifying that cars confirmed to fall under this bulletin and associated inspection should not be deemed roadworthy until a repair is made.

3 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 08/17/2025

On August 17th, 2025, my wife was driving our 2017 Chevrolet Bolt Ev at low speed, pulling into a parking spot. The vehicle suddenly accelerated forward with enough force to cause significant damage to a fixed barrier. She does not recall pressing the accelerator at that moment. The degree of acceleration was disproportionate for a brief accidental press. Immediately after impact, smoke or dust was visible rising through the center console area. No airbags deployed, but it appeared similar to smoke from pyrotechnic devices. My wife sustained seatbelt-related bruising across the chest and thighs. The vehicle remains drivable. I have included photos detailing damage to the car and the fixed barrier. We are aware of the gm accessory all-weather floor liner recall (21e-089), but are not certain if our vehicle’s liner was part of that campaign. We are reporting this incident to ensure there is a record in case this reflects unintended acceleration or another defect.

4 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 07/24/2025

This tends to only happen below 74 degrees fahrenheit and happens excessively between 72 and 74 degrees fahrenheit. While driving with one pedal engaged (labeled as low on the shifter since they re-used another model's shifter for the first several years of the Bolt Ev), the cruise control will randomly disengage and force the vehicle to immediately slam on the brakes. Usually its not a big deal, but when it happens at highway speed as you're just passing a semi or large vehicle and merging back into the lane in front of it, it becomes dangerous very quickly, which has happened a couple of times now. I would venture a guess that its not related to the cruise control directly, but some system that its relying on is forcing it to deactivate the cruise control. The only other issue this vehicle is having that might be related is that the blind spot detection system is not working correctly on the left side. I know there's a TSB for the aluminum butyl tape becoming damaged or missing, but if that's causing my car to slam on its brakes in front of fully loaded semis, chevy should probably be persuaded into re-coding how their cruise control gets disengaged. Especially since this blind spot detection system issue seems somewhat common. Either way, something is causing my car to randomly slam on its brakes in the middle of the highway and chevy says there's nothing they can do about it because its not setting a code. This is definitely a dangerous safety issue that they should be forced into actually diagnosing more than just plugging a computer in and saying: "whelp, nothing to see here. " and returning it to the customer with a "we can't do anything, sorry. ".

5 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 05/24/2025

The contact owns a 2022 Chevrolet Bolt Ev. The contact stated that while in the process of parking the vehicle on the side of a street, the vehicle unintendedly accelerated, and the front end of the vehicle crashed into an unoccupied parked vehicle, which crashed into a second occupied vehicle parked in front of it. No property damage was reported. The vehicle came to a stop upon impact. The air bags did not deploy. The vehicle did not need to be towed. No warning lights were illuminated. A police report was not filed. The first vehicle the contact's vehicle had crashed into was totaled due to front and rear end damages. The occupant of the second vehicle confirmed that the vehicle was not damaged, and there was no injury sustained. No injuries were reported. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer to be diagnosed, but the failure could not be duplicated. The manufacturer had sent engineers who were in the process of diagnosing the vehicle at the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 29,000.

6 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 04/28/2025

My 2021 chevy bolt keeps showing a battery or power-propulsion warning light related to the high-voltage system. The warning keeps coming back even after multiple repairs. The first repair was on April 28, 2025, the second was on December 17, 2025, and it is scheduled again for another repair on March 3, 2026. The light is the same every time and affects the car’s performance and reliability. I’m concerned this could be a safety issue involving the battery or propulsion system. The dealer repairs it temporarily, but the warning keeps returning, and the problem has never been fully resolved.

7 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 04/17/2025

Video available and was given to usaa insurance company. This 2021 gm Chevrolet Bolt Ev premier trim vehicle experienced a sudden uncommanded extreme acceleration when I selected "d" (drive) mode on the transmission selector after using "r" (reverse) to back out of a parking lot parking space. The vehicle, despite my stomping and holding the brake pedal down and repeatedly selecting a different mode on the transmission selector, could not be stopped and still wanted to accelerate. The vehicle traveled an estimated 250 feet through a parking lot, crossing a street, hitting the curbs at high speed and through a field. The vehicle stopped against some concrete debris in the field pushing in the bumper slightly but with no airbag deployment. The mishap incident was video recorded and thankfully, there were no passengers or public / private property damages / injuries.

8 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 12/20/2024

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Bolt Ev. The contact stated while driving 30 mph, the vehicle started to lose motive power, prompting the contact to attempt to pull over to the shoulder of the roadway. The contact stated that the vehicle suddenly accelerated independently. The contact was able to bring the vehicle to a complete stop and the vehicle returned to normal functionality. The traction control and abs warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the front wheel driveshaft speed sensor. The vehicle was repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to technical service bulletin 22-na-089. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 84,000.

9 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 11/10/2024

I was approaching an intersection at a light that had turned red. I slowed down to stop but accidentally bumped into the car in front, 2 mph (approximately), no damage, not even a scratch. I put the vehicle in reverse and gently tapped the accelerator but it instantly raced backwards at full as though the accelerator pedal had been depressed to the floor. I tried to brake but it would not stop and smashed into the vehicle behind. It was scary and traumatizing. Sudden acceleration in reverse. I hope there are diagnostics that will corroborate what happened because I am certain to the highest degree that this vehicle is defective.

10 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 06/16/2024

Twice now within three months while I was backing up as I was parking the car parallel to the curb, the car suddenly accelerated at a much faster pace and projected the car backwards. Luckily no property or individuals were hurt. It would appear that the accelerator or speed control failed at the lower speeds required when backing up to parallel park. I saw no warning lights on the dash however may have been looking back as I was parking. The dealer did not find any code to indicate a system failure. They suggested that we removed the after-market mats.

11 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 01/30/2024

I was driving 72 mph, and went to accelerate to 75 mph to set my cruise control. As soon as I stepped on the accelerator pedal, my 2022 chevy bolt euv jerked violently and immediately applied braking to car to take it from 72 mph to about 30 mph within 1 second. Had someone been behind me I would have been rear ended. I was able to pull over to the shoulder of the road, and put my car into park. I was unable to turn off the vehicle or shift into any gears (reverse, neutral, drive). The car displayed a warning on dash "power drive train malfunction pull over safely". There was no warning for the sudden deceleration and is a serious safety risk and concern.

12 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 04/13/2023

Not necessarily a failure or malfunction. When making right/left turns vehicle will accelerate for apparently no reason. Each time entering a parking lot or making a standard right/left turn. Each time this has happened during this acceleration it has almost caused a vehicle crash with another car in front or in another incident almost hit pedestrian. Found that the rocker switch for cruise control is being hit accidentally causing cruise control to become activated causing the vehicle to accelerate.

13 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2020 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 09/25/2022

Pushed accelerator to floor. When I took my foot off the accelerator car continued to accelerate at full throttle for about 15 -20 seconds. Uncontrolled acceleration stopped when I pumped the accelerator. Chevrolet dealer found no fault codes due to a problem with the fly by wire. It appears that when the accelerator was pushed all the way down it somehow got caught and held in the full throttle position by the gm rubber floormat even though the floormat was held in place and attached to the carpet by the fasteners that gm supplies. I had the car and mats for about 2 years before this very dangerous event took place. The local gm dealer cut and removed part of the mat by the accelerator to prevent possible mat contact with the accelerator. However, the dealer could not confirm the floor mat was responsible for the incident.

14 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 06/10/2022

Euv service soon light came on followed by a propulsion reduced message. Speed was limited and air conditioning was warm. While parked the euv made a pulsating clicking noise. Euv would not go through charging procedure. Euv gave a change complete message with only 81 miles on the display.

15 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2020 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 11/10/2021

I was slowly pulling into a parking lot with my Bolt Ev 2020, the car accelerated uncontrollably and in a split second had collided into the wall in front of me. A section of the wall had broken and the car was wedged in the broken section of wall. This is how it came to a stop. The acceleration was so sudden and uncontrollable that even slamming my feet against the brakes did not help slow down and avert the accident. It is notable that the air bags did not engage during this accident. This wall adjoined an apartment complex and a commercial property. It was fortunate that nobody was affected expect for damage to property. But the collision could have easily caused damage to lives had there been people on the apartment complex side of property. I also had a minor less 10 years old in my car who could have been potentially affected. On reading online, I came to notice two recalls on the vehicle. One of them about the floor mats and possible acceleration as the one described by me seems related. I was not notified by Chevrolet about this recall. I could have removed the floor mats had I known about the additional issue. The only notifications I got were for the battery, for which we have followed the safety pre-cautions prescribed. This incident happened less than 14 hours at the time of writing. A police event has been filled (event 21-34-0195) with the sunnyvale department of public safety. The insurance representatives are yet to inspect the vehicle. There were no warning messages, lamps or other symptoms prior to the failure.

16 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2020 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 08/30/2021

This is third occurrence. When doing hard acceleration (to merge onto road or pass vehicle) the vehicle would not stop acceleration. Hard braking did not disengage acceleration. Placed car in neutral and applied brakes. When placed back in drive continued hard acceleration. Placed vehicle in neutral and came to stop. Placed in park and then drive continued hard acceleration. Had to bring to stop and power vehicle off. . Dealer will triage to see if error codes available. They want me to continue driving since no loaners available.

17 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2020 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 08/18/2021

The contact owns a 2020 Chevrolet Bolt Ev. The contact stated that while driving approximately 45 mph, the accelerator pedal became stuck causing the speed to increase to approximately 65 mph. The contact indicated that the vehicle would not slow down while depressing the brake pedal. The vehicle was shifted into the neutral and turned off to stop the vehicle. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. After the failure the floor mats were inspected, and no related failure was found. The failure mileage was 3,200.

18 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2021 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 07/09/2021

At random times even while driving: first and most importantly, speed will read 0 mph while driving. Second the following errors will appear on the dash: "steering assist reduced drive with care" "pedestrian friendly alert system" also, the following lights in the dash light brake system warning light service vehicle soon light antilock brake system (abs) warning light service electric parking brake light traction control system (tcs)/stabilitrak light if this happens while driving I have experienced the following: if turning, the steering wheel will jerk because the vehicle loses power steering. If vehicle is in cruise control, the cruise control will disengage and the regenerative braking will quickly slow down the vehicle. I have taken the vehicle to the gm dealership. They had the vehicle in their shop for a month and could not resolve the issue. The last thing they did to the vehicle was a complete reset. This has not resolved the issue and it is happening more frequently now.

19 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2020 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 03/20/2021

Tl the contact owns a 2020 Chevrolet Bolt Ev. The contact was pulling into a parking space, she took her foot off the accelerator pedal however, the vehicle inadvertently accelerated forward into the retaining wall. The vehicle was towed to capital Chevrolet (9820 capital blvd, wake forest, nc 27587) however, the contact was unaware of the failure diagnosis, or what needed to be repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 3,000.

20 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2018 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 11/14/2020

Dear sir/ madam, I want to report to you the serious problem I have had with my chevy Bolt Ev ( 2018 VIN [xxx]) in the month of November 2020, after a full charge of my ev bolt, the mileage on the dashboard kept fluctuating when my husband and I were driving from santa cruz to berkeley. I had to charge it again after 70 miles in berkeley. On our way back the mileage showed almost zero. I got so anxious that I had to stop the car and move it from highway 101 south bound to santa cruz and get it recharged in san jose. Second, on three separate occasions, the speed limit on the dashboard also kept fluctuating. Since this model was recalled we took our car to a chevy dealer in watsonville and got it repaired. We had to leave the car at the dealer for two weeks since the dealer was getting appropriate parts from michigan to fix the car. Now my speed has been compromised after the repair. I have been told the car will be recalled soon for a final repair. We are not happy with this model and we are negotiating with the manufacturer to get this car replaced. Thank you so much for your help. Sincerely yours, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

21 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 11/07/2019

While driving the speed limit of 45 miles per hour, the car jolted and lights in the car went on. Transmission light, brake light, stability track light, service park assist light, service steering light, etc. This caused me a challenge in driving the car on a two lane road because the steering became more difficult and there was not a big enough shoulder to pull onto the side of the road. Bring car into dealer and find that the front wheel bearing and hub need to be replaced, the first time this occurred was when the brand new car was about a year old (we did have 18311 miles on the vehicle). About a year later (15 months later), the same incident occurred and the same parts needed to be replaced again. However, we were outside of the warranty due to mileage and they no longer wanted to replace the broken parts under warranty. The same parts should not go out year after year on a brand new car! we asked if there was a recall on parts and were told no. The part numbers on both invoices - sl-n-washer (04710-c); sl-n- nut (06056-bc); sl-n-washer (06056-c); sl-*-n- bearing (060311-c).

22 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2018 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 02/13/2018

The Bolt Ev has a steering-wheel mounted regenerative breaking paddle, which applies the regenerative breaking, slowing the vehicle. However, when the battery is fully charged, this paddle does nothing, which has resulted in some near misses. A warning indicator should be present, or the documentation should suggest enabling "hilltop reserve" to prevent this from occurring. I have reported this to chevy, but no responses were received.

23 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 12/30/2017

Driving home in my 2017 Chevrolet Bolt Ev, when I was about 3 miles from home and the charge/range display showed a "minimum" 15 mile range remaining (see dashboard photo), the message "charge vehicle soon" displayed and the bolt abruptly came to a complete stop. This occurred while driving up a steep, snow-covered stretch of road, and left my vehicle stationary in the middle of its lane, an incredibly unsafe situation. After some experimenting, I discovered that simply dismissing the "charge vehicle soon" message using the "checkmark" button on the steering wheel restored vehicle power and allowed me to drive the rest of the way home. So apparently what happened is that when the car reached about 8% battery power (15 miles remaining divided by 185 at a full charge), it automatically dropped into some sort of low power mode that left it unable to climb a hill. Thankfully in this case, the roads were almost deserted and no one was hurt, but obviously the potential for an accident is very high when a vehicle suddenly stops in the middle of a road. This vehicle behavior is not described in the owner's manual. On page 231, it is stated that at some point when the battery's charge is very low, a "propulsion power is reduced" message will display and the "accelerator pedal response is reduced". However, the following sentence reads, "in addition, the remaining range value will change to low indicating the vehicle should be charged immediately. " that never happened in my case. The "propulsion power is reduced" message never displayed (though propulsion power clearly was reduced), and as can be clearly seen in the posted photo, the minimum range displayed as 15 miles. There was no conceivable reason for the car to shut down with that mileage remaining. I assume this was the result of defective vehicle software or electronics, and it is a clear safety issue.

24 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Bolt Ev

Failure Date: 11/21/2017

When the drive mechanism has been shifted to "l" (low), the vehicle should slowly come to a stop when the accelerator is not pressed. However, while the display showed "l", I have experienced the vehicle continuing to accelerate forward from a stop (as if it were in "d" instead). This occurred while parking, and the vehicle (without operator input) would lurch (as if someone were tapping the break while in "d"). The vehicle was in motion when I noticed the issue -- it did not stop when I removed my foot from the accelerator pedal. The issue persisted after stopping -- I stopped the vehicle with the break, and it would continue moving forward after removing my foot from the break. This occurred in a parking lot while parking. Initially I was turning aggressively to enter a parking spot. But the issue persisted after straightening out the vehicle in the designated spot. Since this acceleration is unintended and unexpected, it could lead to accidents. Things which I would guess might contribute to the malfunction: - quickly shifting from "p" to "d" to "l" after turning on the vehicle. - activating the low-speed collision avoidance system while in "l" (ie, getting very close to parked cars while turning into a parking spot). I have a video of this behavior after I straightened out in the parking spot. But I can't attach videos. Please contact for information.
