Subject: complaint: (abs product failure -- anti-locked brake system) on 2001 chevy suburban - purchased on may, 2003, tomas anguiano jr. Message e-mailed sales@smithchevrolet. Com my husband and I purchased a 2001 chevy suburban from smith Chevrolet about eight months (may 22, 2003). I am also aware that the brake booster were worked before we purchased this car. My husband and I were involved in a car accident on December 14, 2003. He was making a left turn on a two-turning lane, when abruptly the person on the second turning decided that she was going to crossed onto our turning lane abruptly. My husband acted fast and made a quick brake stop but his anti-lock brakes wheels locked. The car would not stop but was heading towards the direction of a concrete column underneath the bridge located at starlight terrace. He tried to turn the wheels to the opposite direction, but it wouldn't turn because the anti-lock brake system locked on his car. There was one long stretch of skit marks on the street right-of-way. The police officer wanted to know what lane we were turning from when I told him that you could tell just by looking at the skit mark on the street. I was told that there should have not been any skit marks on the street especially when one has anti-lock brake system. Allstate tookk possession of the car this past week. Upon coming to a rolling stop, under dry road conditions, the anti-lock brakes over compensate, make an 'electronic groan', and stiffen. This causes the brakes to lose effectiveness. Dt.
The abs brake system when braking and you hit a bump, pothole or depression the brakes go into anti lock and do not come out. It takes about 1/3 more distance to stop. This is especially bad on snow and ice. When traveling with other pickups in upper canada the other trucks could stop on snow but I would go by them by about 25-30 ft. I had one accident where I was approaching a stop sign at a t in the road and the highway was slippery and I hit a bump as I was stopping. Instead of stopping I just slowed and could not make the turn I hit a tree. $20,000 damage to truck. On the interstate i78 I was following traffic which came to a halt for contruction work I was unable to stop and had to pass a car on the right birm of the road. This problem has occured several times with mysel and my son driving. It is very dangorous since your normal stopping distance is suddenly increased and there is nothing you can do.
