1 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2026

Chevrolet has a well documented issue with the automatic transmission on my car. This is the same model transmission in other cars as well. First issue: the stock transmission fluid was incorrect. This required repairs. The underlying issue is the torque converters and solenoid. Most recently, one solenoid got stuck and forced my car into limp mode while driving. This caused the vehicle to force 4th gear and incapacitated my ability to control my speed correctly. I was forced to pull off to the side until the computer reset itself again. A less experienced driver could potentially get into a car accident without the ability to properly regulate speed.

2 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/29/2025

1. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? the service technician at the dealership linked the known issue to the torque converter and potentially the transmission system. The suspected faulty components are available for inspection upon request. 2. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? while driving my 2017 Chevrolet Camaro, the vehicle intermittently and abruptly slows down and shakes/shudders violently, as if riding over rocks. This unexpected and dangerous behavior could easily result in a loss of control, especially at higher speeds or in traffic, putting both myself and other drivers at risk. This issue compromises the safe operation of the vehicle. 3. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? yes. The service technician told me this is a known problem with Chevrolets and stated that they currently have four other vehicles in their service department with the same issue. Given the frequency of this issue (as noted by the dealer) and the sudden onset without warning, I am concerned that this is a broader safety-related defect that warrants investigation. The technician stated multiple times that the issue is likely the torque converter, or in the worst case, a failing transmission. 4. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others? no, the vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer directly, or by police or insurance representatives at this time. I’ve never received any notice from the manufacturer regarding the shudder and recommended fluid flushes. 5. Were there any warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? no warning lights or messages have appeared. The sudden shuddering and slowing down of the vehicle while driving occurs without any prior warning.

7 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/25/2023

While idling out of a driveway on Friday, 8/25/23, there was a warning on the dash that stated "low oil pressure, shut off vehicle immediately. " I immediately shut the vehicle off within seconds of seeing this warning and towed the vehicle home. I've read that these vehicles-camaro zl1 are notorious for failed oil pumps. I have babied this vehicle and do not use it as a daily driver. I only take it out a few times a year and have only 18,000 miles on it. The vehicle is in stock condition and has not been modified which blows my mind that this would even occur on such a well taken care of vehicle that is so expensive and supposed to be the top the line. Of course the dealer was unhelpful due to it being pass what they consider warranty timeframe. I am hopeful that gm will assist in any way possible being that I believe gm installed faulty oil pumps on these expensive vehicles. Also I am a loyal customer to gm. Within the last 5 years, I have purchased 3 brand new chevys-2017 Camaro zl1, 2020 silverado trailboss, and 2021 malibu rs.

16 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2022

I began slowing down for a traffic light and experienced what felt like a car hitting me from behind. The problem is, "no one was behind me". A few days later I began noticing a distinctive shutter between 40 -70 mph. Under my seat, " it felt like I was going over rumble strips . I began researching this issue and learned that gm issued a service bulletin ( 18-na-355 ), and the problem is a "known issue". My question for my senator is this "why wasn't a recall sent out"? apparently a major car makers can get away with designing, building, and marketing a product with know problems which could lead to more serious issue. Since the issue deals with the power train, transmission safety, and the safety of the drivers , "how was gm permitted to simply issue a service bulletin? I followed the instructions and the dealership did not want to complete the work, "I had to write to gm and ask them to mandate the service on my vehicle. After the service my vehicle ran ok for a while, "but now I have strange shifting, slipping, clinking, and a violent jerk at times. How can the ntsb allow a vehicle with issues on the road? again, this is a question for my congressman and senator.

17 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/29/2021

My vehicle dies while going 60 mph or at red lights, creating a dangerous situation in traffic or on the highway. At times when yielding it feels like I've been hit by another vehicle from behind, the transmission does not downshift normally, and the TSB (see attached) proves that general motors knew about this issue and did not notify customers or recall the vehicle for repairs. I have 2 issues with my vehicle and both issues remain unresolved even after utilizing the power train warranty. My vehicle was taken to the dealership for repairs multiple times, the "check engine" light was on the vehicle, no one checked it, and general motors did not honor its power train warranty obligations, "the defects remain unresolved". My vehicle is dangerous to operate, I have tried working with general motors to arrive at a solution, "but I should not be forced pay additional expense for issues general motors knew about a, issued TSB's warning dealerships, and made no effort to notify customers. I am reporting this issue to the ntsb before providing a 30 day notice of intent to sue, to general motors.

18 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/08/2021

When I place my car in park, I get a message on my display that says “shift to park”. Once that message comes on, I cannot turn my vehicle off and have to keep restarting my car until the message goes away, so it does not drain my battery completely. It happens every time I shift to park.

I have found one 106 complaints on your site since sept 21, 2021. The issue at hand is either a faulty torque converter and transmission. I have also found several hundred reports on the internet. And as of today gm has flushed the transmission only to have the problem happen again. I feel they know they have a costly issue at hand. I am more concerned about the safety factor and my family in the car and it decides to fail at highway speeds. Regards, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

22 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/18/2021

Transmission in the 2016 and up 6 speed manual will pop out of second gear and making horrible grinding noises upon engaging and releasing clutch. I know several people who have had this issue and they told me gm is aware of the issue but ignoring it but it is a safety issue because it leaves a person in neutral in traffic when shifting to second it will go in and pop out. It is defective transmission housing in these expensive cars and mines has been doing it since I have had it and it is definitely the defective transmission housing and there is even a youtube video on it. This needs to be addressed before gm gets sued for this. Pandemic has made it even harder to get dealership to get stuff done because personally my car sat at butler Chevrolet in macon two months and they still never touched it and told us to come get my vehicle because they had no one to work on it and they had us in a loaner car with improper tags and registration issues and we reported that to local authorities and we are planning to sue them also if they don't settle for the discrimination and hard time they gave us letting my car sit months for no reason just to tell me they had no qualified technician to work on it and they had got my car full of ants and insects. We need this recalled so that anyone with these dangerous transmissions will get it repaired. Don't do your customers like this we are well aware of what's happening here. We pay good money for these cars. Recall these things before it leads to bigger class action issues and I'm a car truck guy and very mechanically inclined and have many friends who have these cars in manual and some of them have had transmission replacement due to defective housing and that solved the issue.

27 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/19/2019

I would like to report a safety concern with my car having a strong shuddering or vibration, including the steering wheel which I’m unable to move. When this happens rpm remain below 3000 rpm as if the the gears were having trouble changing, the shaking remains while driving in the city at around 25-35 mph and highway speeds at around 65-76 mph. My car was under warranty when this started happening, the dealership flushed and replaced the transmission fluid and it took care of the problem for about 2000 miles (gm has several bulletins in regards to the “shake” on different model vehicles since 2014). When the shuddering returned, I returned to the freedom Chevrolet where I bought the vehicle (actual mileage 53768) and explained the shuddering returning. I was advised to leave the car which now has been at the dealership for months and they refuse to fix the problem stating it is out of warranty. I provided all the bulletins I found on related issue which gm has stated they fix the problem by swapping the transmission on new cars but nothing has been done on the cars that have the existing problem because “there is no recall” as the service advisor stated. This problem could’ve been resolved when I took the car the first time but I wasn’t aware of the severity of the problem or that I would have so much trouble with the dealership now. All I asked is to honor the warranty as the issue was brought up when the vehicle was still under warranty and has less than 60,000 miles.

28 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2019

I purchased this car new in October, 2016. My transmission problems started soon after owning it, growing worse as time went on. The car would not shift, once it did, it lurched. It would miss shifting, lag, delay and roughly drive, even though being an automatic. The dealer only serviced new software updates; all else was ignored. In early August, 2019, a service manager told me to get a second opinion. I soon discovered that gm is being sued, via class action law suits as my problems are being experienced by many others, yet they still sell new cars with this same transmission. On August 17, 2019, I traded it back in to the dealer with only 17,400 miles on it, not knowing that I would be stiffed on the trade in value. Gm did almost nothing to help me, finally admitting that they know they have a problem, but no solution. I have discovered that most trade publications and media outlets have not run this story alerting the public that gm in knowingly selling cars with bad transmissions. How do I recover my losses? thanks, jim marshall.

29 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2019

Transmission hesitates hard shifts vibrates and shudders when accelerating. Especially noticable between 55 to 85 mph. Very dangerous when driving on highway or interstate as the hesitation during shudder may delay critical maneuvering of vehicle.

30 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/18/2019

My Camaro shakes violently when the car cruises at around 1,200 to 1,400 rpm. I have taken it back to the dealer several times and have had the transmission tripled flushed. The problem goes away for a few days and then returns. The dealer says that they cannot do any more to rectify the problem, but the vibration is getting worse. I am concerned for both the safety and decreased value of my case as a result of gm ignoring this problem. The problem has been present since I purchased the vehicle in 2018.

31 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2018

Hard shifts between 1st & 2nd gear vibration between 1500 & 1800 rpm. This car has active fuel management vibration seems to happen worse when in 4 cylinder mode. Gm is aware of the issue and keeps promising a fix which has yet to be released. Blame it on fluid in transmission.

32 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/25/2018

Within a month or so after purchasing this vehicle with less that 20 miles the transmission would studder. I informed the dealership several times. I was told this was a known issue and it was just related to transmission fluid type. I brought the car in for a transmission flush and the problem seemed to go away. It has returned and is causing safety risk. Besides the annoying grinding noise, I have experienced safety related issues concerning this issue. At the moment you need to accelerate the car pausing and slips gears. This has put me at risk on many occasion since owning the vehicle. When needing merge or get over into traffic this has been very dangerous. Gm has made no attempt to permanently fix the issue.

33 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/26/2017

The front and back windows get a film on them. We were told it was because of the leather seats. When the car has been sitting when you start the car there is a shift flare from 1st to 2nd speed. It does it one time after it's been sitting for an hour or so.

34 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2017

The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Camaro. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the front passenger’s side tire would shake. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The contact had all the tires replaced and the tires rotated; however, the failure persisted. Upon investigation, the contact's husband discovered what was commonly known as the "Chevrolet shake"; which was caused by the 8-speed transmission. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was referred to a dealer. The dealer was unable to diagnose the failure and provided the contact with an estimate to take the transmission apart to determine the cause of the failure. The contact declined the offer. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000.

35 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2017

The manual transmission bogs in first gear under aggressive acceleration from a standing start. This most often occurs when pulling out into traffic. I have had the vehicle almost stall on numerous occasions iwhen pulling out into traffic. I believe the cause is excessive torque management in the vehicle's ecu program.
