The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier. The contact was sitting idle at a traffic stop when a vehicle crashed into the rear of his vechile. The front driver and passenger seats abnormally collapsed backward and both the contact and a passenger sustained injuries to the back. Both were transported to the hospital via ambulance. The police were contacted and a report was filed. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was deemed as destroyed. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure and the current mileages were approximately 57,000.
On above time and date, I was traveling down a street at 25 mph when I heard a loud popping sound come from my driver seat. It caused me to shift towards the passenger seat, causing me to briefly swerve on the road. Fortunately, there were no other cars on the road at that time. Since I was near my home, I then parked my car and inspected the seat. Apparently, the backing of the seat (upper portion) and the spring assembly has snapped. Visually, you can see the springs pushing out of the back. This is a brand new car with 575 miles, seats shouldn't just break like this. What would of happened if I were in an accident? I thought the NHTSA should be made aware of this problem before someone does get hurt.
The springs came out of the front passenger seat.
