2 Air Brake Antilock problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 08/09/2003

I purchased my car in August of20 03. I immediatly had to have the rotors redone. Within two months I once again had to have them fixed, this time at the cheverlot dealer in pensacola. Within a few months not only did my roters once again begin to pulsate badly, my brakes began to go out. Both were redone. The brakes at my cost. It has now been over a month and once again my rotars and brakes are messing up. This is very inconvient for me as I am in the military and I can not be without a car because I live off of base.

3 Air Brake Antilock problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 01/21/2003

Aug 31 2002, purchased vehicle. December 5, 2002: abs activated - lost brake power, sailed through red light. Abs activated on dry pavement in garage, no deceleration, used emergency brake to prevent collision with back wall of garage. December 9, 2002: took the vehicle to the dealership/ mechanic and manager drove the vehicle. Said abs was functioning properly. January 21, 2003: brakes failed causing rear-end colllision. Airbags didnt deploy $5,000 worth of damage to front end - less that 4000 miles on veh. Contacted GMC, explained events . GMC investigator downloaded data from abs/air bag device. From that information alone, GMC determined nothing wrong with brakes without driving it -undrivable damage. I received a copy of this print out. Immediately upon getting my vehicle back from the repair shop, I notice vehicle shakes violently when brakes are applied. Repair mech states he didnt touch the brakes - wasnt accident related. Dealership blamed the brake problems on the accident even after repair mech told them directly it wasnt. Dealer turned my rotors and replaced the left wheel bearing which was broken. I still have consistant problems with the abs -activates for no reason/doesnt activate when it is supposed to/when activated it doesnt slow the car down/when activates -all brake power is gone. The left front tire locks up and skids regularly when braking but abs doesnt activate. An independant mech pointed out the dealership had turned my rotors to a point beyond the "machine to" and they failed to sand the rotors which was causing the horrible grinding. I spoke with the dealership general and maintenance managers. We all observed remeasuring of the rotors then they replaced them thin*. Managers stated they didnt know anything about "machine to" specifications and they told me they dont sand rotors after turning them. Untrue: the second time they turned them, they did sand them .

4 Air Brake Antilock problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 06/15/2000

I previously reported this and received odi number: 724108 - my vehicle was totalled in this accident. The brakes failed 4 times and in an attempt to avoid hitting a vehicle stopped in front, had to steer off the road onto a bank. This resulted in hitting a boulder and subsequently the vehicle flipped over onto the driver's side. The only reason there were no injuries or fatalities was due to the seatbelt being worn, and the airbags deploying. I had at least 25 if not more incidences where the brakes failed and was told by the dealer upon having them checked out previously was that there was nothing wrong. I notified Chevrolet after the accident, and was told I have no recourse because I didn't have the vehicle back to the dealer 3 times. I could have had it back 100 times and would have gotten nowhere. In the time of owning this vehicle, had to replace the brake pads twice and the rotors once. There is something wrong when an anti-lock brake system causes the brakes to fail. The only thing good about this mess is that my son, who was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident, wasn't hurt or killed. I have not as yet notified gm as they don't care if they are producing vehicles which can cause serious injury or death. I previously owned a gm jimmy with exactly the same problems with the braking system and was involved in a class action suit against gm. I don't know what happened with it - I sold the jimmy and purchased this Cavalier which ultimately resulted in permanently losing my car. Why doesn't someone do something to stop gm before someone is seriously injured or killed? the consumer is made to feel like they are at fault and don't know how to use anti-lock brakes. It's not our fault, it is the fault of the manufacturer. Will you please have someone contact me with regard to this complaint? thank you.

7 Air Brake Antilock problem of the 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier

Failure Date: 10/01/1997

The anti-lock brakes engage at inappropriate times, at low speeds, precisely as described in the recent recall of gm trucks and suvs. The problem comes and goes. It can occur at very low speeds, and despite very slight pressure applied to the brakes. It is most common on hills, but also occurs on flat surfaces. It occurs on dry as well as wet surfaces, although it is more common on wet surfaces. We have been to the dealer many times and although they have replaced the front brake pads and both front rotors resurvaced and the rear shoes adjusted (at a cost to us of $200. 00) the problem did not go away. We are certain this is the same problem as the trucks and suvs and that the recall should be extended to the Cavalier.
