Failure Date: 04/02/2022

I purchased a 2007 chevy Cobalt and was told by an independent shop that their computer was reading codes for the ignition switch and the air bag lights are on. On top of it the power steering feels like it goes in and out. I know there’s recalls on the 2007 chevy Cobalts for the exact reasoning. Faulty ignition switch and the airbags not deploying because of it. Along with like 4 other recalls gm announced. I just purchased the car not even two weeks ago so I was told to come on here and file a complaint to see if I can get the recall letter so the dealership can fix the car.

The power steering light came on when I was driving my vehicle on the highway. The speedometer stoped working, my car wouldn't shift past first gear. My door locks started locking and unlocking uncontrollably by themselves. My steering wheel was harder to turn. I immediately got off the highway and chose a safer route to return home. I have a 1 year old daughter who is always with my wherever I go. I've researched and found the same issues with the same make year and model car.

6 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 08/04/2014

I am extremely upset with my 2007 chevy Cobalt, I do not want to complain, however, something must be done. For as long as I have had the car I have had a number of problems. However, the dealership failed to acknowledge the warranty. I needed to replace multiple keys and door handles. Recently. The car has failed and is sitting. I find this ironic since my warranty recently ran out. The timing chain jumped and bent the valves. This is a very serious repair and is very costly. I have had everything check regularly. There was no warning and I nearly wrecked my car, as I was driving when it happened. I recently received another recall for the ignition switch. The car was recalled before for a similar issue. Prior to the engine issues recently, I had noticed an ignition and steering problem. However, now I cant even move the car to get the recall issue resolved. This vehicle was my first car, the car is nearly new and was when I bought it. This should not have happened. Especially so close to the warranty expiration and with no warning. There was no way to prevent this from happening. I was not aware that Cobalts had zero tolerance. This should not be the case. I would not have bought the car if I knew of these potential problems. I have faith that gm will help to resolve these issues. Thanks so much.

I take the car to camino real Chevrolet to do the recall for ignition key on 6/9/2014, I get back my car on the same day and go home. I feel that there is some problem on control of speed. On 6/11/2014, I went out with the car for a few mile, the car began lost power and slow down. So I called aaa to tow my car back to the dealer for investigate, they ask me for a checking fee of $300 and told me that they have changed the part, it will be other problem. So I searched the internet there is more recall on that model on the fuel pump and other, but they refuse to replace for me. So I called gm, they said there is no recall on my car, I don't know why? information I searched from the internet said that the wrong computer program, connection, coded keys anti-theft function will affect the car from starting. They never check that and told me to paid for changing the fuel pump. What should I do? I have no car to use over one week.

9 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 05/06/2013

I would be driving down the highway and the car's dials would not work then start bouncing around. Then the power steering message would read out, I would loose power steering. If I slowed down it would take more of an effort to get the car up to speed and the car would jump in to gears hard. It wouldn't shift smooth. None of the gauges would work, and if the a/c was on it wouldn't work. When it started back working, the engine lock light would stay on. And the car wouldn't shift in and out of gear with out jerking.

11 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/19/2012

First off 10,000 miles after my warranty ended the clutch went on this car. Since then I have had to replace the clutch 3 more times, replace the transmission and then rebuild the transmission. Whoever at chevy decided to use atf in a manual transmission care due to their own design flaw of a smaller whole thereby creating synchos which were not properly lubricated should be shot. So here we are again for annual transmission maintenance. . The clutch went out again. This time we changed it and since all the frame bolts were stripped out from the "liscensed mechanic" who did it the last 3 times, we had to take it out the top. Next came the new starter that had to be put in and now it is all back together, all fuses checked out ok, the battery is ok, the starter checks out of, but. . . . The car will not start. Dash lights indicate that there is a power steering issue and I am out of gas, both of which are incorrect so something is wrong and I am out of ideas as to what on this stupid car that I never should have purchased and will never purchase again because it is junk!!.

12 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/28/2012

Battery died in car, had to jump the car. Car started fine, steering seemed to be a little tight. After a few minutes of driving the tightness in the steering went away. However upon arriving at home the key would not come out of the ignition, and the shifter would shift into any gear easily without having to press in the shifter button. Also in attempts to remove the key the steering wheel is now locked all the way to the right with the wheels locked in the right position. Was able to remove key from ignition by locating the emergency key release switch under the steering column but car will not start now as key wont turn all the way, and shifter still shifts into any gear without having to press the shifter button. Car was parked front first against building so I have no idea how I will get it towed out of there to a shop to fix it! I suspect the shifter cable assembly at the end of the shifter which is made out of plastic is broken. Will verify when its taken apart. I have seen at least 50 other cases on the internet where this piece breaks and causes the car not to register it being in park and will not release key from ignition. Gm recalled certain years for shifter problems but not the 2007 unfortunately!.

13 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2011

Purchased vehicle brand new in 2007 and no problems till now. 22 year old daughter driving vehicle, she is a college student. She drives in major city daily and driving home from school gauge cluster went crazy and power steering went out. Scaring her, she parked the car in a church lot and I sent the car to a dealer the next day. I had found on the internet that there was a recall on the power steering assist motor and informed the dealership of such when the work was to be done. They replaced the motor under the recall but also charged me $780. 00 to replace the steering column which they said was bad. I have found 1000 + complaints on the internet of people saying their steering columns were supposedly bad as well with 1 person having theirs replaced 3 times now. She picked the car up and 2 weeks later the same thing occurs again. The dealership looks at it for 4 days and claim they can't find anything wrong so do nothing but investigate. They claim the codes were erased on the computer because we drove it after the fault but the car was parked and immediately hauled to the dealer on a flatbed truck. As I said before there are well over 1,000 complaints on the internet that I have found myself so I am sure there are a lot more. As soon as I can afford it this car will be put in town square with a big lemon sign on it and she will be driving something other than gm.

14 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 11/27/2009

The power steering of my 2007 chevy Cobalt went out Nov 27, 2009, late at nite on I-95 - freaked me out and caused me to be stranded! no dealerships service dept. Open on weekends, so I gave up and drove it back to florida on Sunday (took 10 hours). Anyway, called local dealership, chevy corporate and filed a complaint with NHTSA. . . Unfortunately I had no choice but to take it to dealer for diagnostics and then call corporate back where they said they "might be able to assist with repairs but wouldn't know until diagnostics were done. . . " dealership informed me that they "believe" the problem could be solved by replacing the power steering motor if I would only pay $350 for labor (they would generously donate the motor. . . ) I declined (for now anyway) as we will try to repair it ourselves. . . I cannot afford to pay for this and shouldn't have to as the car isn't that old. The warranty just ran out in September as seems to be the case for many who's blogs I have read. They also noted on the summary that the motor might not actually take care of the problem and if it didn't then they would have to replace the steering column for another $800 plus labor !! my car has not yet been repaired and is still dangerous so I don't drive it unless I just have to go somewhere and have no other option.

15 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 04/11/2009

While driving down the road my power steering light flashed and suddenly I could barely turn the wheel I was able to get to a gas station and my car is currently being repaired but thousands of other people have had the same problem with this car which was easy to see with just a little research online.

16 Power Train problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2007

The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt. The contact stated that the vehicle was purchased brand new and was a lemon since he owned it. While driving approximately 65 mph the pedal malfunctioned and he was unable to accelerate. The gauges on the instrument panel began to move up and down and the speedometer displayed 0 to 2 mph. The security warning light illuminated and he lost power steering. The vehicle was unsafe and the steering wheel was extremely difficult for him to turn to the right or left. The dealer advised him to call the manufacturer and stated there was no defect. Whenever he turned the key in the ignition, the mileage would increase by an additional 2,500 miles. When the odometer displayed the incorrect mileage it affected the warranty. The contact continued to take the vehicle back to the dealer who later stated that the manufacturer would diagnose the failure. The vehicle remained in the dealers possession for three months. The dealer advised the contact that he would no longer experience the failure after they cut out all of the wiring harness; however, the failure occurred within a week. The dealer advised the contact to leave the vehicle in their possession all night where they confirmed that the failure occurred. The dealer and manufacturer stated on more than one occasion that they would give him a new vehicle but later declined to do so. The manufacturer stated that they would no longer replace the vehicle and it could later result in a recall. The mileage also increased by 8,000 while the vehicle was in the dealers possession the failure continued to recur continuously. Another dealer stated that the failure was in the body control module would prevent the failure from occurring. The manufacturer had all related documents including a claim number regarding the failure. The contact was only able to accelerate up to 35 mph. When the failure occurred it was extremely difficult for him to turn the steering wheel. The current mileage was approximately 125,000. The failure mileage was 8,000.
