6 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/31/2014

On Friday, when I tried to back out of my parking space, my wheel was extremly difficult to turn. At first I thought it was because the weather was changing and it was cold outside. Throughout that day, the wheel began to loosen up, but it was still a little stiff. The next day, Saturday, I tried to turn my wheel and it would not turn. The wheel felt like it was stuck. I let my car warm up and eventually I was able to drive the car. On Sunday, I took my vehicle to pep boys to see what was wrong. They diagnosed that my struts were cracked and that was causing the problem. And they quoted me about $600! so I took it to precision auto tune for a second opinion. At precision, they told me that there was nothing wrong with the struts! and that I needed a new power steering motor, which costs me $423. 00. They replaced the motor on Sunday. Monday morning, I went to drive to work and my wheel would not turn at all! I had the vehicle towed back to precision. So now they're telling me that its the steering column that needs to be repaired. And that would cost over $1000. I do not have that kind money and I'm still waiting on gm to fix the ignition switch from the recall. I'm taking the car to a dealership and hopefully they can fix the ignition and the steering free! inorder for precison to refund my money back, they took out the new motor and put the old one back in.

8 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2013

My 2007 colbalt was recalled in 2009 for the steering column motor. I took it in to have the recall fixed. Well today it was making the same sound as it was in 2009 and I was told that I would have to pay out of pocket to replace the exact same part that was replaced in 2009. I know I am not the only one to have to have this done. I really think that general motors needs to further investigate on this issue. I was given an estimate of 950. 00 to repair. Why should I have to pay to have shotty workmanship replaced.

10 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/28/2012

Battery died in car, had to jump the car. Car started fine, steering seemed to be a little tight. After a few minutes of driving the tightness in the steering went away. However upon arriving at home the key would not come out of the ignition, and the shifter would shift into any gear easily without having to press in the shifter button. Also in attempts to remove the key the steering wheel is now locked all the way to the right with the wheels locked in the right position. Was able to remove key from ignition by locating the emergency key release switch under the steering column but car will not start now as key wont turn all the way, and shifter still shifts into any gear without having to press the shifter button. Car was parked front first against building so I have no idea how I will get it towed out of there to a shop to fix it! I suspect the shifter cable assembly at the end of the shifter which is made out of plastic is broken. Will verify when its taken apart. I have seen at least 50 other cases on the internet where this piece breaks and causes the car not to register it being in park and will not release key from ignition. Gm recalled certain years for shifter problems but not the 2007 unfortunately!.

12 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2011

Purchased vehicle brand new in 2007 and no problems till now. 22 year old daughter driving vehicle, she is a college student. She drives in major city daily and driving home from school gauge cluster went crazy and power steering went out. Scaring her, she parked the car in a church lot and I sent the car to a dealer the next day. I had found on the internet that there was a recall on the power steering assist motor and informed the dealership of such when the work was to be done. They replaced the motor under the recall but also charged me $780. 00 to replace the steering column which they said was bad. I have found 1000 + complaints on the internet of people saying their steering columns were supposedly bad as well with 1 person having theirs replaced 3 times now. She picked the car up and 2 weeks later the same thing occurs again. The dealership looks at it for 4 days and claim they can't find anything wrong so do nothing but investigate. They claim the codes were erased on the computer because we drove it after the fault but the car was parked and immediately hauled to the dealer on a flatbed truck. As I said before there are well over 1,000 complaints on the internet that I have found myself so I am sure there are a lot more. As soon as I can afford it this car will be put in town square with a big lemon sign on it and she will be driving something other than gm.

15 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2010

Well I bought a 2007 chevy Cobalt 2 weeks ago. They did the recalls on it and the power steering column I then drove the car down a gravel driveway at my girl friends dads house and the front end sounded like it was about to fall apart. So I took it back to the dealership , they then basically disassembled my entire dash and replaced the steering column. Unfortunately in the process of doing this they tied practically all my wiring in knots and taped it all up with electric tape. The steering still rattles and the problem is better but still exist. I don't think dealerships should be selling cars with this defect. I mean I thought I was buying a car in good condition with 37,000 miles and I end up with the hunk of crap.

16 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2010

I have a 2007 chevy Cobalt LS. For approx 3 months I have been having problems starting my car due to the steering wheel being locked up. Since then, I have had various types of rattling, vibrations, and complications with my steering column. Today (February 9, 2009) I went to leave for work and my key only went to the first position (not start position) and is currently stuck there. My steering wheel wont move, and nothing, nothing, worked on trying to remove my stuck key. I have had a mechanic look at it, and he believes that it is the steering column now interfering with the ignition. I am very very upset that this has happened, however, I'm glad this was not while I was driving. This type of incident is exactly why there needs to be a recall. I love my car, but the safety issues need to be fixed!!.

Loss of power steering with a 2007 chevy Cobalt. The car has to be turned off then back on for the power steering to work again. The failure occurred about once within a week to 3 times a day. I contacted gm's customer service to check on any service recalls and a warranty extension. Since the issue was becoming very dangerous, I had to get the vehicle fixed immediately. 20 Steering Column problem

My 2007 chevy Cobalt was running normally, then the steering column locked up while I was driving. I barely missed a telephone pole as the car was almost impossible to steer. 29 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 09/09/2009

We were driving through a parking lot about 10 miles an hour when my power steering went out. We heard a beeping sound and could not turn the wheel. There was a car coming towards us and we started freaking out and to swerve to miss them so we would not wreck. We had no choice to pull over and try to figure out what was wrong, but since it is electric we could not find what was wrong. Since this happened away from our house I missed work. This problem occurred for about four days before we could get it fixed. We took it to the chevy dealership and they said they were unable to help because it was not under warranty. We were also told that the dealership could not help because no one was in a wreck or hurt. The dealership wanted to charge us 1200 dollars. We ended up taking it somewhere else for 800 dollars. We had to buy a new power steering column and the part of the electrical power steering.

I was driving downhill at about 35 mph, braking to make a left hand turn through and intersection with a light. The power steering went out on my 2007 chevy Cobalt, resulting in my only being able to make such a wide turn that I almost collided with the stop light pole. I then turned the car on and off and could still barely turn the steering wheel. After taking my Cobalt to my nearest dealer the steering column was replaced and I called Chevrolet headquarters to make a complaint. They said they would reimburse the $900 repair costs as my extended warranty ended a week before the accident. After many calls back and forth they decided to not reimburse me at all.

I took it to the dealership the next day and they said it was a very common problem and they would need to replace the steering column. This is an extremely dangerous problem and needs to be addressed by gm. How many accidents need to happen before gm does something about this. I have an earlier model of this same car and have the same issue now only gm refuses to fix it because it is past it's warranty period. This is a serious defect and I now im not the only one having this issue. Two of the same model cars with the same issue at the same house is a problem.
