1 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/29/2022

I own a 5-speed manual transmission which should roll freely while in neutral. After starting engine while on a slight incline in a parking lot, the vehicle would not roll in neutral, as if all brakes were being applied. I thought that by driving the vehicle on the road the brakes would free up, but they did not. I shut the engine off and on a few times but that did not make a difference. I could only move forward at 5-10 mph in first gear to get the vehicle home, which fortunately was just 5 blocks away. Something smelled terrible like burning wires or brake pads. Even after letting the vehicle sit in my driveway for a few hours it would not free up the brakes which were being applied. Then I read a tip on an internet users forum: remove a fuse labeled "abs2" and voila! it freed up the brakes! I can drive the vehicle normally but obviously without abs capability. Now my 19 yr old grandson, who turned the vehicle over to me because of this issue, states this happened to him on two different occasions *while driving on the road!* imagine having your brakes applied while at full speed: this is a serious safety issue which could result in injury or death.

2 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2018

I was at work and parked my car like normal, someone came and asked me if that was my car that was parked crazy. I looked out and it was. My car rolled out of the parking spot with the e-brake on. Another time I started it to warm it up in the morning, I came back out, it rolled out of my spot and hit the curb. I looked to see if there was a recall, but there is not. I did find many other people with the same issues!!!.

"service esc" dash warning came on. Both "traction control and esc" dash lights were lit.

8 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/07/2014

I was driving on the freeway when I changed lanes and lost control of my vehicle. My anti-lock braking system did not work as it was supposed to; my traction control did not work as it was suppose to, which resulted in me losing control of my vehicle and hitting another vehicle. A month earlier, I took my vehicle to rancho motor company to have a recall part on my vehicle fixed. They noticed that my abs and traction control lights were on. They ran a diagnostics test on the vehicle. When I picked up my vehicle, they informed me there was nothing physically wrong with my vehicles abs and traction control systems but the software was outdated and needed to be updated.

10 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/26/2014

I was driving on the everett turnpike in nh. There was a soccer net in the middle of the highway. The cars in front of me had stopped and I tried to stop, but because my power steering was out along with my anti-lock brakes. I couldn't stop. I hit the car in front of me and my airbags didn't deploy. Luckily the only damage done was psychological. If I were an inexperienced driver than I would have died. . I have already had my power steering fixed once and now it has been recalled again. The car as a whole should be recalled. I don't feel safe driving it after they fix a problem that has already happened twice,.

11 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2014

When using breakes on ice roads the back breakes come on first,,and you spin in a circle. . Not good!!!!!! the radio goes off and on when it wants. . This happenes all the time!!!.

12 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2013

While driving in the left lane on a multiple lane interstate highway the driver on my right changed lanes into my lane. On my left was a concrete barrier without enough room for me to avoid the other driver. I aggressively applied the brakes to try and avoid the other vehicle. Even though my vehicle has abs (anti-lock brakes), the left front brake locked up and pulled me into the concrete barrier. At no time in the life of my car have I gotten any indication that the abs system wasn't working properly. In this situation I would have been much better off not having abs than having the system only to have it malfunction on just one wheel.

13 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2013

My most important issue with my 2008 Cobalt lt is that my engine is gone which I think is horrible and I purchased this car brand new I have been the only owner and have taking very good care of my vehicle, I will never buy a gm product again, through reading all the complaints I cant believe this vehicle hasn't been recalled my car started shaking really bad, and making a loud ticking noise, it was very hard to stop and also steer my vehicle I could have been in a very fatal crash or anything! my car also has the same issue about the speakers they go in and out and work when they want to. But my main issue is my engine in which my car I is longer under warranty and the dealership said it is nothing they can do for me, which I believe is totally absurd considering im still making payments on a vehicle that doesn't work, and is only 5 years old, so basically that means to me they will cover your car for 5 years or 100,000 miles then your just on your own which is horrible, to invest and buy a vehicle brand new and it just breaks down in this magnitude! I am very upset and disappointed that they aren't willing to help, so I will be suing them!.

14 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/30/2013

On 10/2013, I was driving on the 105 fwy going eastbound at approximately 60 miles per hour when all of a sudden the vehicle stalled and I no longer could excelarate. East bound traffic was heavy and chp officer had to park behind me with his lights to avoid me getting hit by other vehicles, since there was no safety lane to pull over for broken down cars. The vehicle was towed to one other place before being towed to penske Chevrolet, 18605 s studebaker rd. , cerritos, CA 90703 the following day. In short, I took my car back 3 different times from the first time it was towed there. They would fix one part and I would leave and shortly after the engine light would come back on and I would return. Then they stated it was something else and they would "fix it". The check engine light would come back on once again. The last and final time I took my car in they replaced yet another car part and in total I paid $500. 00 dollars in fees, not to mention time loss at work and gas they use to do "long test drives". To this day the check engine light is still on from the day I left penske Chevrolet. The manager there "michael" in short stated that the car is fixed and that I would just have to deal with the check engine light being on. He assured me the second to last visit that this would be fixed and it never was. The vehicle is still not working as it did prior 10/2013. It cuts and does not accelarates when you initially step on the gas. In addition, the door locks are electric and when I drive they pop up and down on there own. I also will leave my car locked and when I get back the car will be unlocked. This all began after I got my vehicle back from penske Chevrolet of cerritos.

15 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 09/13/2013

After climbing a steep driveway, brakes went to the floor when pulling out onto main road. Brakes would stop but continued to go to floor if 1) brakes were put on part of the way; release and then put on to stop again or 2) foot stayed on brake pedal upon stopping. It was not a sudden drop but a continuous movement of the pedal to the floor. Took to southtowne Chevrolet in newnan, GA and after a couple of attempts to repair the brakes (replacing front brakes, etc) a forman rode with me and they ended up having to flush the hydraulic system to get the brakes to stop. Upon hearing of the recall on the malibus this morning, I felt like my Cobalt might have also suffered a potential hazard in its hydraulic system.

22 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 05/17/2010

1) I drove my car and used the brakes. 2) scored brakes, sounds like a 747 coming in for a landing every time I stop. 3) nothing yet, called the dealership today (05/24/10).

23 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 04/22/2010

The rear brakes on the Chevrolet Cobalt ss are pure crap. They squeal pretty badly when you come to a stop, no matter if it's a fast stop or a slow stop. It gets even louder when they get hot. I've taken to my car to the dealer since my 08 Cobalt is still under warranty and they've told me that high performance brakes are supposed to be loud. . . I'm sorry gm, but not this loud! so they rotated my rotors, and gave me new brakes about a month ago, and it's still as bad as when I got the car back in April of this year.

24 Service Brakes problem

Rear brake rotors and discs wear out far too quickly in average day to day use.

25 Service Brakes problem

Rear brakes wearing way too early.

26 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2010

My 2008 chevy Cobalt came without abs braking system. This winter when I tried braking (even at low speeds) the rear of the car lost control and attempts to spin the car out of control. After three trips to the dealer, gm was called by the dealer. They were told that gm was aware of the problem because of the light back end of the car and there was no fix. This is a very dangerous car. I no longer drive it. I had several near incidents on snow because of this design problem.

32 Service Brakes problem

The rear brakes on my 2008 chevy Cobalt ss turbocharged make excessive noise in reverse, this problem is common from what I understand, and is no fault of the owner.

Rear breaks grinding and worn out after 15k miles.

34 Service Brakes problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2009

The rear brakes on my 2008 Cobalt ss/tc were completely shot at around 14000 miles. The gouges in the rotors were too deep to get turned and I had to do a full brake job on the rear brakes because gm said that they only cover the brakes until 12,000 miles. The new brakes still make strange noises and when the car is in reverse sometimes a very loud screech comes from them.
