1 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/26/2018

Key ignition jammed. Steering column clunking, know TSB issue.

2 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2017

Steering column rattles on rough roads and when braking. After replacing many parts I have figured out with the help of others and the internet that the steering column is bad. The gear mesh between the electronics power steering motor and steering column is not a good mesh. I bought this used car for my daughter to drive to college and work and believe that the steering and braking should always feel smooth for the life of the car. I understand if the issue was warped rotors or worn out bushings but this is a gear mesh. I can not even purchase a new steering column from a parts store. This tells me that Chevrolet knows there is an issue and will not provide a fix. I also have tried buying a used steering column but the auto junk yard said thy can not sell them because they are on recall. I found service bulletin #04-03-8-006g. Condition 1 is what I have and tested using the steps in the bulletin. I then went to forest lake, mn Chevrolet Cadillac dealership for a diagnosis and they said that the part would not be covered under warranty and could be replaced at a cost of almost $1000. I am looking for this to be covered under "special warranty" or recall as I believe Chevrolet knows this is an issue. Please respond with information on when I can schedule a repair. 3 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2016

On 4 occasions the steering stopped working and locked up. Three of the four times was when vehicle was moving in a busy shopping area. In order to regain steering the car would have to be stopped shut off and restarted. After each incident the dealership was notified and vehicle was brought in. The steering column was replaced and car returned to us. At the present time the car is at dealership for the same issue the steering locking up while moving. The car remains at dealership and we notified gm of the situation we received a case number, senior advisor and were told to keep lender and they would be reaching out to dealership. As of this time the dealership has not responded to gm email and we have not heard from dealership or gm about the status of the car. We have experienced this very dangerous and stressful issue several times and do not believe this vehicle is safe and no longer want our lives put in danger.

4 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 10/17/2014

Gm dealer recalled car to fix electric power steering assist. Took car in and had part replaced but when car was driven home it had a grinding noise and was difficult to steer, which was not a problem before recall. Returned to dealer who replaced said motor again, with same results. Returned vehicle to dealer again on 12/30/2014 to do diagnostic on problem with steering, realer said there is no danger to drive vehicle but needs steering column which dealer refuses to replace unless I absorb the cost there was no problems with steering before dealer exchanged the electric power steering assist.

5 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2014

I was driving on the highway returning to work from my lunch. I hear the three warning chimes and look at the dash. The warning reads "power steering". I slow down to make my turn in a quarter mile and realized that I no longer had the power steering. I knew I was on the recall list for the ignition and was still waiting for the part at my local dealer. I found online the bulletin 14115. Dated March 31, 2014, that referred to replacing the power steering motor in cars including my 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt. When I restarted my car, the steering worked for a few blocks then went out again. My father took my car to the local dealer because I had to work. I had printed out the bulletin for him to take. The dealer had not heard of it. He called detroit and spoke to a man named al at gm headquarters. He did not have that bulletin either. The dealer went ahead and fixed the ignition recall part, but could not get the power steering issue to happen. I drove it less than one day and it happened again. I drove immediately back to the dealer. They told me I needed to replace the motor and possibly the steering column. Out of pocket, I paid for the motor replacement. I was told if they ever receive the bulletin, they would reimburse me. I checked online for the recall on my VIN and it is not on there. So is it a current recall or not? and why is gm not notifying people about this issue.

6 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 03/20/2012

I bought this car fairly new. At first there were no problems with it. But after a couple thousand miles I started to hear a rattle noise. I have since taken it to the shop 6 + times. They keep sending me around with their bull crap saying its this, its that, when in fact its most likely the steering recall/problem. When they replaced the steering column it stopped, but only to come back after a couple more thousand miles.

7 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2011

I have a new 2010 Cobalt and I now find that there is a problem with the steering , my Cobalt is not part of the power steering assist recall . I started noticing the problem while turning , I seem to loose power steering from time to time and I don't get a warning light . This happens at low speeds as well as at high speeds and when it does happen turning right or left is harder and the steering wheel seems stiff like I say seems like I loose power steering . I had it into the dealer to confirm that it was not part of the recall and they say there mechanics where unable to reproduce the issue so they say there is no problem and they checked the power steering assist and they did not see a problem with it . The tight steering happens on and off and does not seem to follow any pattern . I started noticing this problem at about 15k km . There was a noise in the front end and the gm mechanics says there was a problem with something in the steering column however it did fix the noise but the loss or what seems to be a loss of power steering control still there .

8 Steering Column problem

Failure Date: 05/05/2010

I bought a brand new 2010 Cobalt lt that was built after the March 2010 recall for electric steering. So it came with the newly authorized electric steering unit. The steering didn't "go out" as many have experienced, but had an annoying pull to the left. The dealership mechanic followed procedure and reset the "centering" with his scan tool, but it made no difference. The service manual said to replace the steering column. The steering column was replaced and that did resolve the pulling to the left. However, when I reach 50ish mph and the computer puts the steering into "stiff" mode there is no play left in the steering and it takes a lot of effort for input. It requires full attention to keep the car in the lane at expressway speeds, and worse still in windy conditions. In short, at expressway speeds, the steering is too stiff requiring much effort, and there is no "play" in the steering so the car continually wants to go left or right, and not "track" straight down the highway, as it should. I find this annoying and tiresome, as I have arthritis and it requires needless effort, and even the junkiest old wreck should track down the highway and stay in the lane without much input. I've contacted every department at gm to find out if the steering can be set to always be in full-power assist mode and no one can answer the question, not even the handicap/special needs department. Gm won't put me through to the engineering department who could actually answer the question, and would know how to go about it.
