8 Door Latch problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 01/17/2012

My 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt lt has started having problems with the driver door since 2 days ago. I had arrived at my destination and went to open my driver door to exit and I couldn't. The driver door would not open at all. I tried locking and unlocking the door to see if it would open and nothing changed. I was locked in my car for ten minuets trying to get out until I finally had to crawl out the passenger side of the car. When trying to get back into the car, the same thing was happening to where I couldn't get in and had to enter from the passenger side of the car. Right now my door is working normal but an hour ago I couldn't get in again. This is a huge safety risk because if someone needs to exit their car quickly and this is happening, there is nothing that they can do to get out. I am not the only Cobalt owner with this issue and have read many complaints of this issue online. This issue needs resolved before anyone gets hurt from being trapped inside the car without a way to escape.

Driver side door intermittently will not close and remain closed (latch). Then would not open for door handle from outside as well as from inside. Door failure to work on 3/31/08 - 3x. Return car to dealer (webb chevy in oak lawn, IL) and called chevy customer service 866-790-5600. Vehicle out of warranty by 1,804 miles. Sheri lane (x32034) from chevy customer service and webb chevy found this to be a safely problem but wouldn't paid for service or assist with the cost. 12 Door Latch problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

Failure Date: 10/18/2006

Entered car (driver's side) and did not close door completely. "door ajar" indicator did not remain lit. Drove away and while driving door opened. No car was in opposing lane (2 lane road) so nothing was struck by the open door. My safety complaint is that the "door ajar" light turns off before it should (before the door is completely closed and latched. I took the car to the dealer today (10/19) and explained the concern. They agreed that it was a problem and actually tested several other cars (same model) on the new car lot and found that they all had the same problem. They also tested the passenger side door and it had the same problem. They spoke with their regional rep and were told that it was a "known characteristic" of the vehicle and nothing could be done to fix it. I then called the general motors national customer assistance center and was told exactly the same thing. In my opinion this is a serious safety problem since the car does not warn you that the door is not completely closed and latched as it should.
